This album was such a grower, it's definitely her most artistic album she had done at the time...my faves are Bad Girl, Waiting, Where Life Begins, Rain and Deeper and Deeper. The videos were amazing as well, the tour was incredible. Definitely one of her best ever and one of the most controversial and most iconic albums of the 90s.

Thank you for giving an honest reaction and not just pandering to your subscribers. I really appreciate that. You are definitely right that this album was a product of its time,. Not just sonically, but culturally. Before this album a woman never sang about oral sex, or AIDS or S&M with such conviction and without apology. There was a huge backlash. It was 92 and some people think she never fully recovered, commercially. The album itself was not as big of a commercial success as her previous LAP, not by millions.. the subsequent music videos and interviews didn’t help because America wasn’t ready to see a woman be so aggressive in her sexuality and stance. It was part of a larger cultural moment that was happening at the time. Woman were supposed to be meek and subservient, this album was not that. It rubbed people the wrong way. 26 years later people understand this album for what it was , a post-feminist album, that lead the way for other female pop stars ( Gaga , perry, and Beyoncé) to follow through. I think as u dive into the music videos and tour performances it will come together for u. Try not to look at the album as a collection of just songs and music, but more as a cultural wave that swept over American. Helping to break boundaries and mirror the hypocrisy that we we’re afraid to look at. Sometimes we still are. ❤️🙏🏻
@amedeo296 жыл бұрын
Forget "without apology", artists -male or female - weren't really singing about AIDS at all. Not on the mainstream level that Madonna was, anyhow. I do think the backlash had more to do with how she saturated the theme. We had the SEX book, we had the explicit film Body Of Evidence, we had the sexually themed album.. it was just A LOT. And it definitely created a backlash. Critics are able to look back now and see the album for what it is, thankfully.
@colinmackillop6 жыл бұрын
This album does grown on you and was very impactful at the time - this was Madonna really setting herself up as an artist that would challenge misogyny, homophobia and stand up for a woman’s right to have self determination over her own sexuality. Deeper and Deeper, Rain, Waiting and Secret Garden are my highlights. I think you will love the live version of Rain from the Girlie Show for the spectacular harmonies.

This album was groubdbreaking in terms of musical production and how the audience would percieve pop artists. It was a pop album but Madonna decided to be more experimental. It was a statement in terms of creative and artistic expresion. It was different from everything else that was popular by that time. It was a serious, adult album, with deeper lyrics and dark sounds. When this album came out it was a commercial failure, because of the sexual content and all the controversy around it, but the thing is, it wasn't a commercial album. It was pure art. And that's why it ended up being a cult album for Madonna fans. I grew up listening to this album in my childhood. It doesn't have any dance hits, it's an album to sit down and listen to with your eyes closed. Now wait to see the videos. They will blow you away.

I haven't read all the comments, so I may be repeating others, but its interesting to see someone react to Erotica who was born after it was released. Erotica was intentionally very unpolished. You mentioned how it felt darker and grittier, that was on purpose. This is sometimes referred to as Madonna's AIDS album. It was recorded around the time she lost two close friends to the disease. Her dance instructor and also Keith Haring, a good friend and artist. She wanted the album to almost have an underproduced sound. You mention that "generic 90's rhythm, and you have to realize that at the time Madonna released this, that sound was just coming to mainstream. So it didn't sound generic at all, but very fresh. The edgy beats sounded totally unique on the radio. Deeper and Deeper is my favorite track from the album, and Waiting is one of my all-time favorite Madonna songs in her entire catalog. This album is very close to the hearts of her gay fans, because of the subject matter. Madonna was a gay icon before this album was released, but this was the point that really cemented that relationship. I have to admit, I was a bit sad at your initial reaction to the tracks.

One other point I have to make, in all your Madonna critiques, the track length comes up. You should know that the 3-4 minute dance tracks is a relatively new thing in the last 20 years or so. Throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, dance pop was expected to be 4-6 minutes in length. That is why you had what was known as the "radio edit". Each of Madonna's singles had a radio version that clocked in at around 3:30 on average. If you were to listen to Immaculate Collection you would see that each track is between 3-4 minutes. I don't understand why anyone would want a dance/bop/pop track to be short. Its intended to get up and make you groove. If you listen to Donna Summer albums from the 70s, New Order or Pet Shop Boys albums from the 80s, or Black Box, Deee-Lite, Chemical Brothers, etc albums from the 90s, you'll see that its very standard to have tracks this length. Ive never even thought of them as long until I noticed how often you referenced you thought they were long.
@SDoesNotKnow6 жыл бұрын
Every time I listen to this album in it's entirety, "Rain" hits you like a hurricane. It's unexpected and an brilliant reprieve from the production of the rest of the album. I love "Erotica" but it's definitely one of those grower albums that is not as accessible as her other work. It requires more attention and thought. I also do think some of the production does sound similar, but it probably is one of Madonna's most coherent albums and the message and image behind "Erotica" probably makes this her most important work. Also, I think we should have warned you that this was definitely a 90s, underground, urban House album filtered through Madonna's mainstream pop sensibility. I don't think you were expecting that so you weren't prepared for some 90s house music. I think house music is something one has to grow into like progressive rock or some other more experimental music genres. This isn't an album for bops.
@JakeStainbackMusic5 жыл бұрын
SDoesNotKnow I also think house music is one of those things where you would’ve had to come up listening to it in order to understand it and enjoy it. I grew up on 90s underground club music thanks to my Dad, and Madonna’s music always had that edge to it.

Also respect to you for being a genuine honest reactor, Erotica is a fave by loads of Madonna fans, me included, but it's cool for you to be honest and say you only liked certain songs on first listen or liked albums like Like A Prayer or True Blue better. You might get back to this one after you know her whole back catalogue or seen all the videos to this era and it might grow on you, because even for me it was a grower, not super instant and i thought it was samey in the beginning as well, then i started to really love it, the lyrics, its cohesiveness etc. or you might not and have other of her albums that you get back to and that's totally fine :) great channel

Now 90s Madonna is a truly interesting magical beast.... As you know on the journey thus far her first three albums were very much for the HITS and big anthems, messages in catchy hooks, captivating visuals and big moments.... Like a Prayer was her first ALBUM album in that it had concept, visuals, creativity, cativating artistry and a timelessness.... which continued into I'm Breathless... here with Erotica it is very interesting to see your initial reactions to it in that the main focus is on the beats/rhythms/productions..... and the first album to really focus on it....the messages, the sounds, the styles... as each song really is personal and raw....hopefully videos and performances from the era shall hit it bigger for you.... it is a transgressive era for Madonna leading into her very best era of music IMO ;-) ... also to point out DITA was the alter ego she recorded as in this album hence the storng concepts.

I love your reaction to Rain. You're going to die when you watch the music video, its equally gorgeous. You should know before watching that it was shot in black & white and colorized. So the colors are intense. Which... the whole thing is predominately blue, including Madonna's eyes. Its gorgeous.

What makes Erotica my favourite Madonna album is how bold it is. Such a contrast to her discography up to that point! I absolutely admire how the lyrics cover more than one aspect of sex (including the joy of sexual freedom and, remarkably, the sadness of death by AIDS); and how she sharply cut the 1980s pop sound and embraced this cold house music groove. It's a dark and mature album that wasn't crafted particularly to please radio stations, and it was everything but a safe move for her as a popstar. Thanks for the reaction; I hope that you can get to enjoy the album more as you get more familiar with its themes when you check at the singles and live performances of this era.

Placing bets that your favorite videos will be BAD GIRL, RAIN, and FEVER. They are artistic, visually stunning videos. Erotica is sexy, her look is iconic, but it gets a bit tired after a while. It didnt age as well as the Justify My Love video, which is true art. Deeper and Deeper is my FAVORITE track on the album, and the video is an hommage to Studio 54 and Andy Warhol, and for that alone its fun. Madonna's wig is also fun. But compared to the first three videos I mentioned, its not quite as memorable.

The singles of the album worldwide was ''Erotica'', ''Deeper and Deeper'', ''Bad Girl'' and ''Rain. ''Fever'' was release in Europe in single and the song was a radio single only in US. And ''Bye Bye Baby'' was released only in Australia when she was on tour on the ''Girlie Show''. ''Erotica'' created a blacklash at the time of the release of the single (it was the first single of the album) and the music video created a huge controversy because of his highly sexual charged. THe video played only three times in MTV during the night before it's was banned. It's was the second video of Madonna to banned on this channel after Justify My Love. Depist that, the song peaked in top 10 in 10 countrys at the time of the release.

Extremely underrated album when it was released, caught into the furore of the SEX book, when people tried (thank God, to no result!) to end her career. With Erotica she managed the absolute transition from Pop megastar to an Icon. This album made me a fan for life and I was barely like 10 at the time. And you're right: Erotica album is very monotone/consistent house jazzy/house rhythm. It's very much a thematic album with specific beats, but that's part of its charm I believe. She knew what she wanted to say with it and went with it, lyrics and sound. Respect Also, it is very very difficult for younger audience to fully appreciate what she was doing with this album and that "challenge the system" bit used to mean something completely different and this was her LGBTQ rights album, the group who had no rights and no mainstream presence in society at that time. We're forever in her debt for everything she has done.

When you'll be reacting to Erotica's music video, could you react to the original uncut version? This will help you understand more the impact the era had on Madonna's career: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2i2nGOobrRsnpI As for the album, it took me time to like it, but it is now one of my favorites. It is a really unique one, and I think that Madonna was really bold to release such a record at a time where no female artists spoke about sex or AIDS! There are 6 music videos from this era being: -Erotica -Deeper and Deeper -Bad Girl (one of my all-time favorites) -Fever -Rain (this one is gorgeous) -I'll Remember (a song from the With Honors soundtrack). Then the next album is Bedtime Stories, which is completely different and is in my opinion even better (it used to be my favorite for quite some time).

I know Deeper and Deeper was one of your favorite tracks from the album, and this mix is probably more up your lane. First of all, its an edit, so its a good two minutes shorter. Second, it was mixed by the fantastic DJ David Morales, so you don't have that stripped down grindy darkness that permeates the album. It has a far more polished and crisp sound. A little fun fact: The David Morales version would go on to be the version used on her Girlie Show Tour, and also make an appearance on the compilation series MTV Party To Go. The actual radio edit has never been commercially available on its own outside of the MTV compilation. The single had the 12" mix, called Davids Klub Mix, which actually clocked in longer than the album version. Anyhow, please search MADONNA DEEPER AND DEEPER DAVID MORALES EDIT. And enjoy!!! Its everything!!

you should react to the 2006 version of erotica It's called "you thrill me" It was actually developed from the original demo of erotica and arranged for the confessions tour, so It's a COADF era song.

Also, I agreee with the production issues in this album, It's kind of boring. The only track where the generic Pettibone beat worked is Deeper and deeper, which is actually my favourite song of all time

There are a couple loser songs, but you hit the nail on the head, it's an album to sit and listen to (or dance alone to) because the lyrics are more important than usual for her. I love your reaction to Rain - isn't it wonderful?

I keep meaning to say, if you love 80's Madonna with all the synths etc.. You should check out the 80's UK pop group Five Star, from their first album "Luxury of Life" up to "Between the Lines" Classic 80's!!!

I know she wanted to cause an impact with Erotica and she did it cause it reached #3 on the BBhot 100 despite being banned almost everywhere but I wish Deeper and Deeper would have landed first. ❤️
