At its release, this sound was underwhelming. Pop was full of harmonies, full sounds, drops, electronic beats. We’ve now had 6 years of minimalistic rnb, so a song like this that fell flat 10 years ago suddenly sounds fuller. Another reason is that this song is heavily influenced by work that wasn’t relevant in the 2010s. Nowadays, we long for the past a lot more (a byproduct of the pandemic and tiktok), hence why a song like this, that some described as “dated on release” now actually holds value. Madonna is also a victim of mysoginy and blatant sexism / ageism. She was also at a weird turning point in her career where people expected her to lay down and turn into a legacy act, so her releasing something like this that could be seen as pandering to the younger demographic was seen as desperate. The pop scene in general was a lot more toxic back then still. Subsequently, Madonna was never going to be given a chance for a song like this, no matter the sound.
