The dramatic and poignant transition from Holiday to Live To Tell to Like A Prayer is so quintessentially Madonna-from joy to grief to redemption. I can imagine during her near death “induced coma”, her spirit took her to relive and visit her dearest friends who perished during the AIDS epidemic-symbolized by her ride on that cosmic portal as she sings and looks sadly but lovingly at their images…to honor and say goodbye to their memory one more time; and to offer her prayer for them. This is so hauntingly beautiful and spiritual.

Watching this performance on KZbin I said to myself "well cool, good performance", but when I experienced it live I got huge shivers and felt what Madonna just wanted to convey through it. First fun and "Holiday" and then death, lots of death. I appreciated it strongly.

The artwork is Keith Haring’s. The Polaroid that pops up in the beginning is her and Keith. He designed her Desperately Seeking Susan leather jacket. She still has it. It’s insane to think about but she literally lost every friend she had within a span of 5 years to AIDS. Her gay advocacy wasn’t manufactured. She lived it. She was in the trenches in the early 80s with her friends.
