I think your're forgetting that Madonna is in the 4th decade of her career. To have 3 peaks of success and acclaim in your career (Like a Prayer, ROL, Confessions) is a massive achievement and you cannot continue that forever. She's almost 62. Gets no radio or streaming support and yet her albums still consistently go to number 1 around the world. Her tours still do great business (many outlets have said the madame x tour is her best since 1990). And her last albums (in particular Madame X) have had fantastic critical acclaim. The fact is her relevance commercially started to decline after she hit 50 and there are many factors in that including an ageist industry that doesn't want to support women over 40 (she did remarkably well bucking that trend actually). There's also a lot of competition now for female artists but most crucially she doesn't need to be competing with any of the younger artists. She is in her own lane occupied by no one else, the only other female artists who come close to being contemporaries are Cher, Streisand and Mariah and even they don't still have the same level of buzz as Madonna. It doesn't matter if she never does another album or has another #1, she's Madonna. Being relevant in terms of sales is not the only marker of being relevant.

perhaps because they are genuinely talented, and though as a madonna stan you believe madonna is too, thats just cause your blinded by your love for her, she's not. If Madonna was genuinly a good songwriter her albums would stay on the charts for way longer than a week or 2 because the general puvlic would be buying it, not just the fans. The fact is Madonna doesn't appeal to the general public, not cause of her age but simply cause her songs just aren't very good anymore. I'm speaking from my own experiences too. I used to love her up until music, and then ugh i kept trying but no, i just couldn;t get into her music anymore. It's just not that great. Fans love her because of her lyrics, they love HER so much that whatever she has to say, the fans go wild if it's really personal. To a wider audience its the actual melodies that has to be catchy, if you're not a fan of the artist per se, then you're looking for a catchy tune, and she writes dreary, unmusical songs, because instead of working with actual song writers she works with djs,being more interested in style than substance. That sums her up.

I think with Rebel Heart and Madame X she just stopped focusing on commercial success and rather just have fun with it. That's not to say MDNA and Hard Candy were bad albums, in fact they're my personal favorites. Have you ever considered Madonna might want to choose to take a long break? She signed a three album contract more than a decade ago (MDNA, Rebel Heart and Madame X) and a three tour deal with Live Nation (the three corresponding tours for those three albums). When her Madame X tour ends next month, all her contractual obligations will be fulfilled. She could choose to pursue another one. Although im surprised she hasn't done that already. She began her Interscope contract when she hadnt finished her Warners one yet. Which makes me suspect Madonna might actually take a long break by choice after the Madame X tour ends. She'll probably release a Madame X tour on DVD in late 2020 (it was filmed in Lisbon). Then go quiet after that. Perhaps we'll see a Greatest Hits tour eventually though but not after a hiatus. That's what I sense. We'll see what happens. PS - if you disagree, do you have any news on her working on a new album contract? Or any news whatsoever on her post-Madame X era? Would love to be updated on anything I've missed

@@bc5163 I am aware that she is human and that she needs a break sometimes. However, Madonna would go against herself if she was to stop with music and touring. She said long ago that she will never be one of those artists that announce they're retiring and just quit. She won't stop haha. Madame X really reminds me of her American Life era; political and not everyone can adjust to that. My predictions are, that once the Madame X era is over we are going to get a Confessions Pt.2 era, like we did after the American Life era. I'm not saying that she will be disco again, because she never repeats herself. When I say "Confessions Pt. 2" era I mean the crazy amount of sucsess that will come with it. I think that jazz rnb music could be her next big thing, that would really suit her because she sang really good jazz accapela on the jimmy fallon show...

Shes an amazing woman, I remember being a 12 year old gay boy in the suburbs of Brisbane in 1988 (just before Like a Prayer came out) and considering my options in my deeply religious family. Do I come out? Do I become a woman (I have never been trans but at one point growing up having a sex change seemed a viable option to keep my family) or should I run away and find a better life? I vaguely knew of a world where people like me existed and lived happily and freely but how would i find "the gays". It took me another 2 years, Like a Prayer came out with its message about people living with hiv needing love and acceptance. That people living with hiv could be hugged, held and kissed and no harm would come to the person doing the hugging and kissing. This message was GROUNDBREAKING for the time and for a MAJOR artist to put it in the album cover notes of the album that litteraly changed critic perspective of her from pop princess to major artist, the female equivelant of Michael Jackson and Prince. Madonna gave me someone to look up to, she let me know that it was ok to be me, she let me know that there were other people like me out there, all i had to do was take the steps to find them. While I'm no longer a rabid fan, I will never forget what Madonna did for me, she gave me hope when there was none to be had. She told me of a home that i would find later. She told me i could be anything i wanted to be and most of all she told me I wasnt sick, i wasnt a wierdo or a pervert, she let me know that i was lovable, that i was not dirty. Madonna is AMAZING, girls and gay boys owe her so much for the freedoms we take for granted today and most dont even know it. It really doesnt matter how many records she sells, does anyone care how many records Joni Mitchell, Patty Smith or Deborah Harry sell? Not really because it doesnt matter, its just nice when they drop 12 songs for us to listen to, its just nice to be in their company for 2 hours when they tour. You missed out a lot of points. Ageism is the main reason of her "decline". Compared to her peers like Cher, Mariah, Janet or Barbra she's still the most relevant. The fact that she's getting #1 albums and sold out tours in the 4th decade of her career is huge. BBC radio from the UK was exposed for ageism as they didn't want to play Living For Love even tho it was getting airplay. It is known that radios won't play songs from artists older than 40 but its just the way industry works. After American Life she was banned from radios in the USA, that explains why Hung Up was #1 EVERYWHERE but in the US lol. Also, the autotune critics are so tiring, countless rappers and singers use autotune and no one seems to have a problem with it but when Madonna does it it's wrong, these double standards need to end

Sorry, but I dispute the idea that Madame X was met with positive to mixed reviews. It was her best reviewed album since Confessions of a Dancefloor. And I also think it's injust not to point the big role that ageism has in this "decline", it's not like Madonna is the only woman over 50 to experience a "decline", Mariah is lucky (not trying to tear her down or anything, love Mimi) to have a transcendent song like "All I Want for Xmas is U" that became part of the xmas celebration, but other than that, she's suffering the same fate as Madonna, same with Cher, Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue and so many other veterans. There is a real discussion to be had about the punishment the music industry applies on Women just for aging!

@DA BIG D I really don't want to turn this into a stan fight cause i don't think it's helpful anyway and also i have nothing against ohter female artists, that being said, one could argue that being 50/over 50 in the 90's is totally diferent than being 50/over 50 in recent years, Tina didn't have to deal with streaming service or radio banning her songs. At the same time, one could also argue that at that time it was already possible to have a discussion about the music industry negletting older women, cause Tina Turner was 53 when she scored her final top 10 hit (1993's I Don't Wanna Fight). After that she was unable to crack a top 80 song or chart at all. Just for some context, Tina Turner released her first solo album in her mid-30's and she had her finest peak when she was in her mid-40's with Private Dancer.

DA BIG D Explained by the fact that Tina was never about her looks! Those other gals relied heavily on sexuality and looks which unfortunately FADE. M is giving off full revolutionary mode since RH. At her sales peak she was always a physical breezy knockout. She lost that appeal since HC and the failed face lift and traded her super charismatic eyes for angry revolutionary ones which most definitely isn’t as federating. People are fools for image. Ask Marylin and Kim K.

I believe the 'aggressive' tone of MDNA also has to do with events in her personal life, such as her divorce from Guy Ritchie. To answer your question (video title).. I'd say NO. The media tried to end her career since Erotica. 28 years later, Erotica is legendary & very influential to all these latest music that we hear today. I was a weirdo to discovered Madonna during her declining era (94-95) & kids in my school made fun of me liking an older artist like her, because Mariah Carey & mushy R&B ballads was all the rage at that time (which I'm glad the 90s are over lol). People have been questioning Madonna’s talent, success and longevity since she first exploded onto the music scene in the 80s. She is a pioneer and has arguably had more reincarnations and successes throughout her career than most. She is the biggest selling female artist in history. She is the highest grossing solo female touring artist in history. She has achieved heights that others can only dream of and aspire towards. She truly has nothing to prove now because she has achieved it all. Despite her last three albums not achieving any massive success (aside from 2 of them reaching #1 on the Billboard charts) these are far superior in quality and artistry compared to the majority of music being released today - you only need to read the majority of reviews by critics for her last three albums to see this. To focus so much on the superficiality of sales is to completely overlook what Madonna has and always will be about - QUALITY!

You're overthinking it. The "controversies" are irrelevant. The quality of her music has always been what it's about. And it has declined. End of. Albums prior to Hard Candy have been released off the back of an epic first-single anthem and had a majority of single-worthy tracks. Ever since she started _chasing_ trends instead of _setting_ them, prioritising luxury cosmetics and film direction over studio time, her music has suffered. (Who here can forget William Orbit's frustrated tweet about MDNA being rushed because her diary was horrendous). Madame X proves she can (and should) still experiment musically, but the album feels unfinished and suffers from some of the shoddiest lyrics since Don't Stop's "feel it in your body, sing lah de dah de!"

Creatively, the beginning of the end actually began with Hard Candy. That's when she started chasing trends rather than leading them. That was practically a Justin Timberlake - Pharrell - Timbaland album featuring Madonna. It was successful mostly because she was still riding on the high from Confessions on a Dancefloor and the trendy sound at the time. MDNA was the worst of all - never has she been worse lyrically and sonically. That debuted high mostly thanks to a Superbowl performance and album-ticket bundles. Rebel Heart was a step forward, and Madame X would even be better (perhaps even great if she actually sounded human throughout most of it), but it was obvious the general public just didn't care anymore and mostly saw her as just an old, desperate has-been who refused to dress appropriately. I still enjoy all those albums I have mentioned (albeit I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to the mind-numbing electro thuds of MDNA), but I definitely wouldn't be ranking them among Madonna's best - that's just common sense. And now her current tour is proving to be her most problematic yet. It will be interesting to see what her next move will be after this era.

When she finishes her current tour in March, she will be out of all her contractual obligations and could choose to stop and do nothing. I suspect she'll release the Madame X tour on DVD since it was filmed in Lisbon. But after that I wouldn't be surprised if she disappears for almost a decade and comes back with a greatest hits tour way later on

As madonna said, this industry has taught her, "DO NOT AGE. BECAUSE FOR WOMEN TO AGE IS TO SIN". Ageism is the No.1 issue here, but how she is not giving up and still performing and continuing her career at 62 is pretty phenomenal.

This is how i feel about any artist. Regardless of weather they are currently 'topping the industry' or 'getting good reviews' or whatever... Focus on the moments that YOU as an audience member enjoy about their work. No one can take that enjoyment away from you, and no one can undo the amazing things she has already done. If anyone is disappointed in her, it's on them, not Madonna.

Missed the mark with Rebel Heart and Madame X? Are you serious? Both albums were critically lauded as stunning returns to form from a performer who is, quite literally, without peer. Not forgetting that Rebel Heart spawned the highest grossing tour by a female artist ever. At 57 years of age. The beginning of the end? Pah! Madonna's in full flight.

I'm a zoomer but I'm a HUGE madonna fan. I think her decline started with MDNA, not Rebel Heart. Sure, Give Me All Your Luvin was a hit but MDNA is easily her worst album of all time. Just overall really incoherent and uninspired. Rebel Heart was a little bit better, but still uninspired. Despite its commercial failure, Madame X is easily her best album since Hard Candy. I feel like for a long time she's been making music just for the sake of doing it, but now she actually has something she wants to say, which is probably due to the current political climate. All the big pop stars from the 80's passed away. MJ, Whitney, Prince, Bowie... But Madonna is still alive and kicking. We should be thankful that she's still with us, let alone releasing music. She paved the way for so many female singers to come, and she was the first singer to openly support the LGBTQ+ community long before it was considered cool. It's so sad how she gets little to no credit for all that she's done for us.

john rossi Nah, it’s not even a comparison. Madame X=Hard Candy>Rebel Heart>MDNA
@ib64674 жыл бұрын
@john rossi I mean, to be fair, Rebel Heart was probably more exciting than Hard Candy, and represents what Madonna's all about much better. With that said, the production on Hard Candy is very good thanks to Timbaland/Pharrell/Timberlake, and the overall tone is much more consistent and coherent. But I understand if you prefer Rebel Heart over Hard Candy. I think it's a matter of taste.

@@nah....6151 Yeah, MDNA was a generic mess... MDNA was the first album that came out since I became a fan of Madonna in 2010 after discovering her on KZbin. I remember getting a physical copy of MDNA when it came out and getting so disappointed. Yeah, most zommers don't listen to Madonna and it's such a shame. I enjoy pop divas of my generation like Gaga and Beyonce too, but only a few of them actually have a point of view, I feel like. Madonna's music deeply resonates with me on a level that nothing else does. Her whole catalog is insanely diverse, versatile and eclectic. Her long career isn't for nothing. She literally has a song for everything.

As a Madonna fan, it's sad to see her decline. I would love to see her have more and more hits. There are a lot of factors that come to mind to her 'decline'. I think the main one is ageism. Radio does not play her. And if they do, it's only for the first single of a new album or her past hits. It's happening to her, Janet, Britney, Mariah, Celine, Shania, Christina, etc. I think it all started with Hard Candy. I personally saw this as the start of Madonna following trends instead of setting them. She has the right to make the music she wants to make. I'm still going to buy it. JT, Timbaland, and Kanye were all popular at that time. It was a smart move to get those people ngl. MDNA was an angry album in some way. She was going through her divorce and had the hard, angry music to match. Rebel Heart, the leak hurt that album 100%. When those 8 songs leaked, M and her team rushed to revamp the tracks sadly. My only issue with Madame X is the use of autotune and the cohesion of the album. But I did see this as her comeback to her creativeness. She definitely got that back during those 4 years. Her tours for those albums have been nothing but great. Each tour made me appreciate their counter album even more. I hope to see a release for the MX tour. Also, the Tracey Young remix of 'I Rise' won a Grammy last weekend.

She allowed herself to get a little out of shape (for her standards!) while living in Portugal. She said this herself. So by the time tour rehearsals started she was already not at peak condition, and she injured herself before the tour even began. But like a champion, she pushed through the injury as far as she could, and it wasn’t until halfway through the tour that the pain finally caught up to her and she began to cancel shows. And to be fair, she’s 61 and still moving better than most pop stars half her age. I can assure you if Katy Perry, Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift even attempted to go through the motions of the MDNA Tour (which Madonna delivered at age 54), they’d crack every bone in their body and would end up in the emergency room halfway through the show.

The only reasons why she may be loosing "punch" is because of young generations, like you and myself, whose parents are not educating about the real musical icons who gave birth to every trash singer on the scene today. They also discredit her for her age.
@bc51634 жыл бұрын
What are the singers out now? They're not very famous. People generations older knew who Britney, Gaga and Taylor etc even if they didn't like them they knew who they were or heard of them. What pop singer that has come out in the last two years or so is a real celebrity? In my opinion, none. A list of one or two hit wonders, not many new legends in the making if there are any. For or better or worse I feel like celebrity culture in the music industry is dying if not already dead. The only ones with big names are the legacy ones that started several years ago. I think the streaming era killed celebrity-dom in music. Now music just kind of pops up on spotify and the song is remembered but not the singer except for already well-established singers like Ariana (her first album was ages ago so I include her as a legacy carry over from the previous era). I think we will not get new music legends. Which is sad. Just a bunch of random monotonous stuff streaming on spotify from one hit wonders streamed to you because digitially it sounds the same to other stuff you previously listened to. A very sad state of affairs
