Yes! Vincent Paterson was the choreographer, and everyone was concerned about the fan flip. He said that at the end of each rehearsal the girls had to perform 30 fan flips in a row, without dropping the fan, before they could leave. It paid off because no one dropped their fan.

That film won an Oscar for Best Costume Design. The movie (starring Glenn Close, Michelle Pfeiffer) portrayed intrigue and romance in 18th century (1700s) extravagant lifestyle in the French royal court ( Marie Antoinette era) and not the British Victorian era (1837-1901) that one of the reactors mentioned.

Fun facts - the dress madonna is wearing is the dress glenn close wore in 'dangerous liesons' - this performance was released as second video on first ever vhs video single 'justify my love' - the costumes are from baroque era, 18th century - the french royal court visuals are connected with later release of immaculate colection's very limited box edition called 'the royal box' that featured, beside cd in baby blue plush box/tape (depends on the box), vhs and unique postcards, also a big poster of this performance. it took me 30 years but i managed to get one - official reason why french nobility started to wear wigs in 17 century is that after king louis xiii begin to get bald, he wore wigs to hide that and made them court fashion - practical reason is rise in siphylis aka 'cupid's disease' amongst nobility in 17 century, who's one of symptoms is loss of hair - later the size of your wig became personification of the size of your social rank - at that time the corsets were not as tight as later in victorian and edwardian era when they became literal killers

Love this comment but corsets we’re never literal killers. Even in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, corsets were worn everyday, including by lower class women working in factories, as maids, on farms etc etc. Corsets were literally just undergarments that helped with breast and back support. The only people that ever had any issues with corsets were those that tightlaced to extremism, which was a novelty and seen as something only a wealthy woman of leisure would have any time for. Still, it was rare even back then. Consider it like extreme body modification. It wasn’t a common occurrence. The propaganda behind “corsets are horrible” etc etc actually became popular by the man who invented bras because he wanted to sell his product. Then Hollywood continued the killer corset storyline but actual historians, particularly those focusing on historical garments, have been debunking and trying to stop the spread of misinformation about corsets for decades now. For the most part, corsets were comfortable and able to be worn even during hard labour without issues. They were simply undergarments. They also helped hold up the huge weight of the layers of clothing during different eras. They served many purposes but they were never widely dangerous or painful to wear. 😊

@@tomislavm8789 Yes, but even that quote says TIGHT corsetry. The average woman wasn’t tight lacing, as I said. Corsets are meant to be laced up but not laced up to the point where there is any discomfort at all, especially with breathing. Given that corsets were worn as undergarments, not fashion, they weren’t tight laced down. They were worn comfortably and could be worn all day, including while doing hard labour, without discomfort. You’re talking about people who wore their corsets for long periods of time laced too tightly, which, as I stated, wasn’t the norm, it was a form of body modification. Pneumonia was a huge cause of death because of many factors but corsetry wasn’t one of them. Even in the quote you posted, it says that TIGHT corsetry can EXACERBATE lung conditions, meaning the condition would already be present and could be worsened by over tightening the corset. So, again, corsets didn’t kill people. Wearing corsets improperly could cause issues for people or exacerbate already present problems. Medical corsets were, and still are, used to this day for different conditions, usually involving the spine. It’s like saying that shoes are harmful because some people wear six inch high stiletto heels all day, every day, for years and develop, or exacerbate, pre-existing foot problems, or fall and break their ankles etc. The average person doesn’t do that, and, if they do, they usually do so against the advice of their doctor and with the knowledge that they’re putting their health at risk. Same thing with corsets back in the day. Most people simply wore them normally, for the purpose they were intended for (breast and back support as well as helping to carry the weight of the heavy layers of cloth that would go on top) and had no issues.

It’s so frustrating that the beauty standards called for a certain shape (like the hourglass shape, for example, which was achieved mostly by the volume of the top/sleeves and skirt rather than the corset itself, like an optical illusion) and women were mocked for NOT following said beauty standards. And then they were mocked for following them by men who didn’t know how corsets worked. 🙄🫠

This is an ICONIC performance for more then 1 reason. MADONNA not being afraid to show herself and her dancers as amazing performers. She brought to the spotlight THE BALL SCENE...a scene that was under ground in only gay clubs. VOGUEING was pretty much not known to the general public. Since it comes from the Gay LGBTQ world. She has been an LGBTQ ally since the beginning of her career. This and for many many more reasons is why she will always be the QUEEN.

The performance is a representation of a BALLS from the lower neighborhoods of Manhattan, late 80s and beginnig 90s, that´s why Madonna recreated this TYP OF PERFORMANCE doing lyp sync. The Act was about "MARIA ANTONIETA" (2 de noviembre de 1755) and its explaind, why dancer and backgrounds dressed with coustums. Although Janet Jackson and Sinead O'connord won most of the important awards, Madonna only won 2 of them, in minor categories, but was "the public's ovation of the nicht", she literally stole the whole SHOW. This was a watershed in the way of presenting a performance on MTVs, from that moment on, already in 1991 artists began to imitate this precise interpretation (hello, that was 1990). I remember in the newspapers, magazines and newscasts that they talked about the climax of the night of that awards ceremony. Months later, Madonna released her IMMACULATE COLLECTION ALBUM, and realesed a VIDEO COLLECTION OF HER GREATEST HITS IN VHS where she included this video in it. The spring and summer of 1990, Madonna presented her BLOND AMBITION TOUR, the people expected that she performs the same act that night, but she surprised everyone reinventing choreographies alongside her usual dancers, and her backup singers DONNA DELORY and NICKI HARRIS.

That is my FAVORITE TV Performance of a song/video. It was SO creative and inventive, took the song visually into a whole new place that I feel Bridgerton must have taken queue from. This is PEAK Madonna. From now until early 2000's you could not touch her. Such an icon! Every little gay boy had their VCR recording this and re re re re re watching it to learn the choreography.

Videos number 1 and 2 were both part of blond ambition tour and the show was broadcast live on cable from the shows in France and Japan. This performance Madonna is paying homage to Marie Antoinette and the French court. At the time the court had everything to do with high fashion, which is one of the central themes to the song. And of course, she adapts the choreography to fit in an 18 century royal court setting. Genius. Iconic.

I just discovered your Madonna reaction videos and I am obsessed! So I have been a Madonna fan since 1983 when I was 9 years old! When this Madonna Vogue Live Performance aired - I was 16 years old. I was EVERYTHING - everyone watched it and everyone was talking about it. By this point, I already knew I was gay and I had just seen my very first Madonna concert a few months prior - The Blond Ambition Tour. I had not come out yet, but this live Vogue performance pushed me to come out a few weeks after it aired. Your comment about the parents freaking out because of Madonna and her influence on the young was very true. Anyway, it was a big deal and it changed my life.

I'm old enough to have watched this live. It was the last performance of the show and for the most part it was a sensation and widely praised. There was a rumble of criticism because she lip synched to the album track and didn't sing live, but that was from the traditional rock & roll crowd who disliked everything that wasn't what they did. This performance was actually much more creative than just showing up and singing the song, and took a huge amount of extra work as well.
