The video for Don't Tell Me was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who also directed Open your Heart, Justify my Love and Human Nature. It's very subdued but I think it's full of details and one of her most hypnotic music videos. The choreo is one of her best (if you pay attention, she accidentally steps on one of her dancers' foot and laughs, and I love that they kept it in the video).

The intro and outro visuals of the video are so beautifully done. She's so reserved in her composure next to the 18-wheeler semi-truck, which is a nice contrast to the beautiful wild horse, finally bucking the rider off its back to run free.

The music video for "What It Feels Like for a Girl" was directed by Madonna's then-husband, Guy Ritchie. He's a highly successful filmmaker, known for directing hits like Snatch, the modern Sherlock Holmes films, and Disney's live-action Aladdin. However, he also directed Swept Away, starring Madonna, which ended up being his biggest flop. Despite its reception, I remember enjoying the movie at the time. During this period, Madonna was leaning into a "housewife" persona, there’s even a photoshoot of her feeding chickens at her mansion (LOL). She had moved to England, citing her displeasure with Bush’s election, though it seemed more connected to her marriage to an englishman. While the era might feel a bit subdued on the surface, especially in terms of music videos and promotion, the Drowned World Tour was anything but tame. It was an absolute powerhouse of a show and the first Madonna tour I ever watched (sadly, only on DVD). The production was incredible! I can’t recommend it enough, you should definitely check it out.

Yesss, I've heard this tour mentions so many times now, I am more than sure it will end up on the MJourney! Interesting about Guy, I actually had no idea about him or what he did etc. Wild that he directed the MV, it's so good! So it's cute that they did something creative together!

The three music videos of this era subvert different american male prototypes, namely the pimp, the cowboy and the criminal! It's very interesting, and each Madonna album has a theme after all, Music seems to put a focus on the psychology of relationships with men from the point of view of women and gay men. It's very interesting if you think about it!❤ Love your reactions by the way!

MUSIC really cemented Madonna’s relevance among hot new comers such as britney, xtina pink. With this album and single, not only she outperformed her peers such as janet or mariah but also the new pop bitches.

Outperform Janet & Mariah? Hardly. All three artists had #1 hits in 2000. Music came out in 2000 & was Madonna's 12th & final #1 hit. Mariah's Rainbow album era was 1999-2000 netting two #1s & multi-platinum sales comparable to Music. Janet's All For You would be released a year later, in 2001, to considerable critical & commercial success & two #1 hits. What Music DID do was show Madonna's ability to keep pace with her contemporaries & the new princesses, but eclipse them? Not since 1986-1991, henny. Mariah & Madonna both remained relevant in 2005 & 2008 with hit albums.

@@foxesamu janet did very well with all for you but madonna outperformed her in ways where both of them nominated for mtv (including brit and chris) but it was always Madonna who won. @@got2bjosh i love mimi dahling but please remember in early 2000s when it comes to best female artist, usually the nominees are madonna, britney, janet, mimi, and christina but it was always madonna who won. Rainbow to be honest was the early career decline for mimi (tho i cherish crybaby and bliss) followed by glitter and charm which made mimi out of the radar during that period. Thank God for confessions and emancipation

What It Feels Like For A Girl may possibly be my favorite video from Madonna. Madonna wanted the song “Impressive Instant” to be one of the singles from the album but the label was dead set against it so she chose to perform it live multiple times at her promotional stops and eventually the tour. That’s part of the reason why there were few singles/videos off the album.

Madonna was pregnant with Rocco in the Music video. Look at her tummy. Then in ‘Don’t Tell Me’ she’s just given birth. On Letterman, she’s exhausted with a newborn - she says it on another interview from that time. You can tell, her hair, no makeup etc.

I was obsessed with the What it Feels Like for a Girl video when I first saw it. Such a cool video, displaying her Female Rage. It was directed by her husband Guy Ritchie whose known for making very masculine actioned packed movies. Funny enough, the video ended up being banned because it was deemed too “violent”. She pointed out the double standards saying that they had no problem showing men in violent scenarios, but when a women did it suddenly it became a problem.

"Music" was a take on the big pimpin' style music video, the original concept had a big break with an action sequence in the middle but since she was pregnant they changed it to animation. "Don't Tell Me" takes the musical theme of the album mixing traditional instruments with electronic sounds and translates that into a visual tableaux of the cowboy western aesthetic but have it be presented around her through green screen and treadmills and a mechanical bull. Acoustic versus artificial. The "What It Feels Like For a Girl" music video is about rebirth and retribution. The video establishes that the character that Madonna plays is severely injured and possibly dying, as is the old lady and they are going out with a bang, in a red car with a phoenix on the hood of the car (a sign for rebirth). All the videos as someone already pointed out subvert the idea of male stereotypes. The "Paradise (Not For Me)" video which was part of the Drowned World Tour is considered by some as an official music video too, but I guess that will pop up later on in your journey!

Consider her previous appearance on the Letterman show in 1994 had the media and a handful of high-profile celebrities trashing her for almost a year after that infamous appearance. I feel the uneasy/awkward guardedness she seems to emit in that interview could've been her not wanting to get played on air. I also feel her nerves from it being her first time showing her guitar playing skills may have also been a factor. Personally, i am glad she and David are on far better terms now. I just WISH he would have her as a guest on his Netflix show "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction..." She's the definition of his show's title.

After so much of the Ray of Light era (right up through the “American Pie” music video immediately preceding this) was so much of enlightened spiritual earth mother in long hair & denim jeans, the “Music” video was a breath of fresh air with its glossy Mary J.
