This specific era of Madonna was so fabulous. I was a freshman in high school and she was pushing boundaries and it was so exciting.
@santiagohardy2728Ай бұрын
I clearly recall that era. For well over a year after the Erotica album, SEX Book, and Body of Evidence film came out, both print and TV news media trashed her, her looks, her art, and her creativity to almost no end. Madonna was "canceled" before canceling someone became a pop-culture phenomenon. So many of the current pop girlies could never survive, and thrive the way Madonna did back then. Madonna is STILL doing that to this very day.

This is when she became the God of Gays. She pushed against the demonization of gays due to AIDS. This was a scary time for people and she was the face of a community that was dying. Made women stronger in their choices. She truly was a force no one can deny.
@manuelveidst4869Ай бұрын
“Gays” standards expectations have gone lower and lower. Why do they always need a “god”? An icon? Why this adoration? Why give so someone so much power? What on earth did Madonna do which was so empowering for the gays?? She was always here to help herself first. The gay cause is a by product that helped her become super rich.

Interesting time in Madonna’s career/life! This was during the height of the backlash caused by her ‘SEX’ (1992) book and provocative image with videos, magazines, music and film. But she toughed it out and taught us all a lesson on the importance of maintaining a good sense of humor and surrounding yourself with people who get you. I remember one interview where they asked her how she would like to be remembered, and Madonna answered “I’d like to be remembered as a survivor.” The eternal QUEEN 👑

She held herself up so unbelievably well considering the relentless pile on from the media during this era. Others would have, and have, crumbled. I mean, there’s always a media pile on with Madonna, but this era felt particularly cruel. The far right was in constant clutch of their pearls over what Madonna was showing the world; god forbid anyone expanded their minds and narrowed their prejudices. Edit: ughh the questions the men asked her, and she just carries on, very mindful, very demure. “Where do you see yourself in 10 years” is low key “You know, you can’t go running around naked forever, young lady.” 🙄 😊

@ I agree with you. It’s not a masterpiece like “EVITA” (obviously). But it’s a good psychological, sexual campy thriller. Like all of the other campy thrillers that were being made around the same time. Just about every person I’ve ever suggested to watch it,… always ends up liking it. It was because she did it. They had a thing for her at that time. It was like she was targeted. It truly was like she was one of the first people to actually be canceled. They were cruel to her. It wouldn’t have mattered what she did. When you look at some of the people that have been nominated for Oscars, it is a tragedy that she didn’t get nominated for “EVITA”. “EVITA” should’ve been nominated for best picture too. BUT,… Madonna was in it. They tried to destroy her from the beginning and they just couldn’t. And they’ve never given up. She’s a true underdog. She’s a true survivor.

I wouldn't say that. She's not amazing or anything but she was good in Desperately Seeking Susan and A League of Their Own. She was GREAT in Dick Tracy and of course Evita, which she won a Golden Globe for and was widely seen as being snubbed for an Oscar nomination. And she was also really good in Dangerous Game, which came out a few months after Body of Evidence. The problem is that she's a very self-conscious actress and has chosen some really bad films. She never put the time and energy into her craft or choosing the right projects. And some that she would have been great in (like Chicago with Goldie Hawn) fell through. Her skill as an actress is evident in her music videos and stage performances.
