The way the violin CRIES in this song is touching! I love it!

This song is as mentioned by others reflecting the death of her mother when she was a 5yo girl and her father taking it out on her because she looked like her mother and has the same name as her Madonna senior is her mother - The man that slapped her face and left her with bruises was her ex husband Sean Penn that she married in 1985 and he would get drunk and as you see in the clip. The other thing was her mother in the coffin with her mouth sewn up because that was Madonna's last image of her and they sew her lips to keep them shut (Madonna has actually recently released photos of her own mouth sewn shut). The final portrayal was the Catholic church and how it forces couples to remain married in a toxic marriage because she felt so guilty when her marriage to Sean ended and she finally divorced him with a lot of Catholic inflicted shame and burden - So "Oh Father" was a representation of all the men that she loved in her life had been abusive in some way or another - 1. her father, 2. her husband 3.the Catholic hierarchy are all men...... it's a multifaceted story and Madonna did explain all the above.

Madonna also clarified in an interview at one stage (which gave me a lightbulb moment) that Madonna had been pregnant twice (in 1986, and again in '89) during her marriage to Sean Penn but that because of all her career commitments she chose to abort them both. Not to condone Sean Penn's actions, but I can understand how a husband's initial happiness at being a father would turn to anger in this situation. The second abortion in '89 turned out to be the last straw for him and he snapped. This is the reason Madonna never laid charges and she has never spoken badly against Sean. She understands his feelings.
@WilUnleashed2 жыл бұрын
To be clear, this is loosely based on her own life experiences very loosely. It mixes the reality of her mom dying with the fact she felt betrayed in a way by her father. The physical abuse from her dad nor her husband (Sean Penn) is embellished. Keep in mind, while Madonna does write from her own experiences, she does include other scenarios and experiences that others can relate to. It's quite a cliche' in life for women who have abusive fathers to have abusive relatioships with their partners, boyfriends, and husbands. Though, there is no evidence that Sean Penn physically abused her. He gets that reputation because he had attacked people of the press and was actually sent to jail for it. So of course, everyone assumes he was abusive to Madonna as well. Til this day, she has confirmed that he never laid a hand on her.

Her most underrated song and video. Madonna’s mother dying at age 5 and then the strained relationship between her and her father (who was dealing with losing his wife and now a single dad) and how that later affected her first marriage. Madonna has said this song was about her struggle with the patriarchy.

Oh Father was from her 1989 blockbuster album-Like A Prayer-which she dedicated to the memory of her mother. Madonna is considered a pioneer in developing the music video into a cinematic short film. In this case, it’s her way of dealing primarily with some of the traumatic events in her childhood: 1) the premature death at age 30 of her beloved mother when Madonna was age 5. Her mother died of untreated breast CA in 1963 from repeated exposure to radiation due to her work as an X-Ray tech when precautions and protective gear were not as good as today. 2) the funeral wake when Madonna viewed her mother and noticed that her lips have been sewed shut at the mortuary-a scene that would haunt her and she would recreate in the 2019 cover photo of her Madame X album, with a close up of her face in ashen pale color and her lips at first glance appearing stitched but on closer look were scrawled in dark letters-MADAMEX. For Madonna this also symbolized the censorship that she had experienced and fought against throughout her career. 3) finally, the love/hate relationship she had with her dad after the death of her mom and her father marrying their housekeeper. There was also the abusive relationship she had with Sean Penn that was alluded to in this video. This music video resonated for people who’s had some unpleasant childhood experience, death in the family, perhaps abuse (physical, psychological, including alcoholism)-and Madonna had the courage to artistically portray it here. When this video first aired on MTV, there were complaints that the closeup funeral shot of the stitched-up lips was “too disturbing” for some viewers. MTV asked Madonna to delete that clip or MTV will stop airing the music video. Madonna refused this attempt at censorship, and told MTV that she’ll cancel all her future appearances with them including the airing of her future music videos if MTV insists on her clipping that scene. MTV backed down and resumed airing the Oh Father video.

@@FranklySpeaking. my reaction about this video was not meant for you who may know as much as I do about Madonna’s life and career. My focus is for those reactors/commenters, mostly of the younger set, who take a superficial dive into Madonna’s musical artistry, not bothering to do some research, missing out on the depth of symbolism and messaging behind Madonna’s music videos. I see this within my own circle of family and friends, who are pop music fans mostly of newer artists but take a casual look into older icons like Madonna. So what I’m telling here to them is: OK, if you’re interested, you don’t have to go far, just take a minute more to read up on what influenced Madonna in making this song/video. As an ardent admirer of Madonna, I make an effort through my reaction here to synthesize in my own words my knowledge of her life, career and her art from different sources, and by connecting the dots here, perhaps someone will take a deeper interest and have a better appreciation of Madonna’s artistry, then it’ll be worth the time and effort.

He adored Madonna’s music (He was brainwashed by me, being a fan since 1983) When he passed it was during the first major Covid lockdown and I couldn’t get to his funeral as I live in a different country. We played Like a Prayer at his funeral and that song will always play a special part in my life. The final verse in Oh Father is so interesting and makes me think about what our parents and grandparents may have gone through in the past. Be kind to your parents and enjoy every minute with them, cause life really is too short. 💙✌️

I just love the way she uses multiple symbols in her videos. Sometimes subtle but often recurring so you get it after a while. The broken pearls constantly falling then mixed with spilled alcohol says so much. “What a child will believe “ takes you back to the innocence of childhood and sometimes confusion as in her mother’s distorted lips in her coffin. I still can’t get through this song without tears. Masterpiece.

I do feel a sadness that the younger generations won't have her be such a constant presence in their lives as she was to those of us who grew up with her, but she's left a massive body of work for them to discover and fall in love with in their own time. It's a story of duality. When she was young and when she was an adult. Her mother dies in the opening scenes and her father can't handle it and take it out on the younger Madonna. Notice the pearls that fall. When she's older she finds herself in another abusive relationship (evident by the slap and her covering up the bruises). She realizes she has to get out and when she does you see her lover keel over with a bourbon bottle. Did you notice the liquor pouring out with the pearls soon following after? (a reminder of her relationship with her father).. In the end she makes amends with her now elderly father at her mothers grave site and then pans to her as a young girl dancing by her mothers grave. Her most underrated single and music video

Glad you like this song and video so much. The video is amazing and was directed by David Fincher. "Oh Father" single peaked #20 in US and #16 in UK. Madonna have had 38 TOP 10 Hits (all released as singles as before 1999 songs could not chart if not released as 7" single or CD-single) in US and 63 TOP 10 Hits in UK so you still have a lot songs you will love from Madonna. In US Madonna even have a few huge hits that never charted in Hot 100 (as "Into To The Groove" that was only available on 12" single and despite becoming the best selling maxi-single of the 80's decade and being a dance #01 for 5 weeks was never allowed to chart on the main chart - the song peaked #01 in UK). This song and video are great but I'm sure at end will probably not even be among your favourite TOP 10 among all Madonna songs ☺

This song and video’s theme is physical abuse…first of a father towards his daughter and how this eventually leads the abused girl into entering a toxic relationship as an adult. The death of her mother in here adds to the loneliness she felt as a little girl and probably a sense of not being protected from the abuse. The scene with the dead mother’s sown lips is something Madonna has talked about before…I think it’s one of her mother’s memories. This is something that is again seen in her Madame X album cover. Madonnas life and career is full of interesting stories and episodes that will some day be appreciated…maybe.

Madonna herself has said this song is amalgam of the men in her life, her relationship with her own father during the years following the death of her mother, her abusive and rocky relationship with her first husband, actor Sean Penn, and others unspecified. By her 4th album, Like A Prayer, Madonna was ready to self reflect and give us glimpses of herself in the songs in that album. This video, she wanted in the style of the great film, Citizen Kane.

The funny thing about Madonna is that I feel like people have specific ideas of her - she sang "Like A Virgin" or "Vogue" or some other iconic song, so that defines who she was and is - when in fact she has such an incredible library of songs. Madonna's known for reinventing herself over and over again, but it's not because she changes her look, it's because she refused to narrow herself to one type of sound or one genre of music. There's a reason she's been so successful for decades; she never fails to surprise you and draw you in.

This is truly one of Madonna's best videos and song. Story goes that is was recorded in one take and never redone, but on that I could stand corrected. It's worth noting that this is from like a prayer and that album contains another very poignant song also about the death of her mother. It's not as huge as oh father but is more like a quiet lament. To me it's very touching and I think you may like it too. It's titled promise to try.

It's an autobiographical song. It was about her mother dying and her relationship with her father that then translated to her abusive husband Sean Penn. The sewn lips are of a memory she had of her mother's funeral where she saw her mother's lips being sewn together. A normal thing since the lips are the first to start rotting...but a botched job since you shouldn't be able to see that.
