I remember when I was a 15 year old kid in the UK this video debuted as a Pepsi Ad and they only included about 45 seconds of it, but I recorded it and played that 45 second over and over again, until I could get my hands on a recording of the whole song about 2 weeks later on its first radio play. And then bought the single when it finally came out. We didn't have MTV here in those days. People don't realise how patient we had to be back then. Nowadays everything is instant. Back then we got little teasers and releases like this were huge events.

Madonna's song 'Like a Prayer' is a complex mix of spiritual themes and earthly passion, which intertwine to create a powerful and emotional narrative. The lyrics begin with a reflection on life as a mystery and the need to face it alone. However, the song quickly transforms into an intimate and personal experience as the loved one's voice becomes a call that feels like home, suggesting a deep and almost divine connection. The metaphor of prayer is used to describe the intensity of the relationship between the narrator and her lover. Prayer, traditionally seen as an act of communication with the divine, here becomes a symbol of the spiritual and emotional connection that the narrator feels. The repetition of 'I hear you call my name' and 'It's like a little prayer' emphasizes this spiritual connection, while the description of falling to one's knees and wanting to 'take' the lover 'there' suggests deep surrender and vulnerability. The song also plays with the duality between the sacred and the profane, which was a topic of controversy upon its release. Known for pushing the boundaries of artistic expression and provocation, Madonna used religious imagery to explore human passion, leading to debates over blasphemy and freedom of expression. 'Like a Prayer' remains an iconic example of how pop music can cross borders and spark important conversations about faith, love and identity.

"Like a Prayer" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 1989 fourth studio album of the same name. It was released as the album's lead single on March 21, 1989, by Sire Records. Written and produced by both Madonna and Patrick Leonard, the song heralded an artistic and personal approach to songwriting for Madonna, who believed that she needed to cater more to her adult audience. Thematically, the song speaks about a passionate young girl in love with God, who becomes the only male figure in her life. 🔥

She was criticised for it but she didn't care.Madonna has always been vocal about social issues through her music and this song is the best example..the other songs are Papa dont preach which speaks about teen pregnancy, then Justify my love is about LGBTQ community,and her recent song "Gun control" from Madame X speaking about stopping violence by Gun weapon. My daughter at age 11 lost her dad to a sudden death. His death was during the mid night hour, this song was at it's popular peak and she played it constantly over and over. Although we never discussed the song, I know she was thinking of her dad and the words are so fitting of one losing another. For a long time I thought Madona created this song around losing her mother. It has been27 years and the song still affects me, the sobs come.

When I needed escape, I’d head to the old pergola where we’d sometimes gather for church or family celebrations, and I’d dance to Like a Prayer by Madonna. I didn’t care if anyone was around; I’d let the music carry me, freeing me from whatever I was holding inside. That was a place where I could let go, feel a sense of euphoria without needing to understand it. For a few minutes, I’d be suspended, beyond his influence, beyond everything else. He’d marked me, shaped me in ways I couldn’t escape, and it had left me with an inner storm that still hadn’t settled. But out there, under the beams of that old pergola, in the swirl of music and open air, I felt something close to peace.

This song was my introduction to Madonna (I was just 8 back then) and I simply fell in love with it! I remember literally waiting for HOURS and HOURS watching MTV and hoping I would see it! (No Internet back then) And of course, according to Murphy's law, it was always on when I went to the bathroom! 😁 But, the very few times I got to see it were simply amazing... The emotion, the thrill and the excitement of hearing something that went straight to your 8 year old heart were breathtaking! I got the cassette after a while (which I still have) but it was never the same as watching the video. Now, all I have to do is type on the You Tube "like a prayer" and BANG! Instant gratification! I still love the song, but somehow it felt more precious to me back then, because it was such a rare and special occurence! Or it was simply my 8 year old heart that made it so amazing! Eitherway, it doesn't fell the same today.

Same here. I was 13 and italian tv banned this video plus I lived in Sicily and there wasn't MTV at all. So to see the whole video and not just some excerpt I had to wait until the release of "Immaculate Collection": in the meantime this song has changed my life. Now with KZbin and all this kind of stuff I don't know if the experience of watching one of your favourite videos ever is less precious but at least is more simple.
@pvuccino6 жыл бұрын
antinoocp well I can see why you would prefer KZbin, when you couldn't even SEE the video! That seriously sucks! I'm Greek and the Orthodox Church had no issues with the video. Probably because Madonna was Catholic and the Christian symbols she "supposedly" insulted were Catholic ones, so they thought it was the Vatican's job to ban the video. (as it did) So even though I personally AM a Catholic (my family has Italian heritage), the fact that I lived in an Orthodox country really helped me there! 😁 What seems odd to me is that we had MTV back then (the American one of course, via satellite) and you didn't, seeing how our countries are so close to eachother! But then again I live in Athens and it's perfectly reasonable that other areas of the country didn't have it back then.

@@samuelking9497 "People aren't as sensitive as they were before" "It's different now". The only different is that now it's the left not the right who are holding the censorship banner. If a song comes out and pisses the left off, it doesn't come out. THAT'S the only difference.
