Lyrics:
I have a tale to tell
Sometimes, it gets so hard to hide it well
I was not ready for the fall
Too blind to see the writing on the wall
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
'Til then, it will burn inside of me
I know where beauty lives
I've seen it once, I know the warmth she gives
The light that you could never see
It shines inside, you can't take that from me
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
'Til then, it will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew
Then will I ever have the chance again?
If I ran away, I'd never have the strength to go very far
How would they hear the beating of my heart?
Will it grow cold, the secret that I hide? Will I grow old?
How will they hear? When will they learn? How will they know?
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
'Til then, it will burn inside of me
The truth is never far behind
You kept it hidden well
If I live to tell the secret I knew
Then will I ever have the chance again?
A man can tell a thousand lies
I've learned my lesson well
Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned
'Til then, it will burn inside of me

I think this is one of Madonna’s best songs and one of her most beautiful looks. Just natural beauty. ❤
@kda61
@kda61 Жыл бұрын
I also thought this look with the shoulder length honey blonde hair brought out her natural beauty more than the short, white blonde hair. She's wearing the same look in the Material girl video, plus dressed in formal wear, and she looks stunning. Wish they'd picked a better dress for her to wear for this video, but the video was reflecting the theme of the movie, so I get it.

I am privilege to have grown up in the times and likes of Madonna, Laura Branigan, Cindy Lauper when music was pure and good and authentic. This is one of Madonna's crowning jewels in her illustrious cabinet of wonderful, wonderful timeless classics. The pure unadulterated simplicity of 'Live to Tell' and the deep emotions it evokes goes on to say this one song is Madonnas heart and soul poured out in intricate melodies, hauntingly beautiful and heart warming!

This is by far Madonna's best song of her career, hands down, and one of the very best pop hits of the 80's! The lyrics and music are haunting and brilliant, and they cut deep. The song was so breathtaking that Sean Penn, Madonna's husband at the time, handpicked it as a soundtrack song to his 1986 underrated crime drama At Close Range that co-starred Christopher Walken, which I recommend everybody see.

"Live to Tell" is the story of my life. I have listened to it a thousand times, and I have yet to get through it without crying. I know she lived it! So did I, and likely many others. But only she had the talent of soul to write it down, and set it to music in this deeply touching way. What an artist she is! I love her!

Fun fact, her “True Blue” album still remains one of the best selling albums of all time. Three different songs from the album were number one hits on the US Billboard 100: “Live to Tell”, “Papa Don’t Preach”, and “Open Your Heart”. If KZbin existed in the 80’s a lot of her songs would’ve had hundreds of millions of views! And Madonna is still awesome in 2024 :)

Of course, men can relate to that happening to them, as well. She also says she now understand where beauty lives. I have to agree, this is Madonna's best song ever. The percussion beat emphasises the the power of the lyrics. And as a few have mentioned, her lower register is just so stunningly beautiful. This song was inspirational to me in Jul 86 when I suffered severe injuries from high speed motorcycle crash. I was 17 facing a severed arm, multiple compound fractures and the ridicule from family/friends that I had f'd my life up. 35 years later , I'm at the top of my game, still getting stronger/smarter everyday and finishing 20 years or service in 2023. God Bless Our Country and the human will to survive and win! I will live to tell. I proved them all wrong. Personal Thank you to Madonna for this song and the True Blue Album from 1986, for me...........it gave me the grit to push thru pain barriers most can't understand unless they've suffered life threating injuries.

StarlightShadowDancer Oh no, of course. That's one of the things I hated about watching Stranger Things. Despite being a great show (As well as taking place the year I was born) it just reminded me of something we'll never have again. There were no smart phones, or internet, family shows had some kind of lesson and not an agenda, being American was a point of pride. Anyhow... I imagine watching that show is like being with the prom queen back in high school and remembering how great she was, then showing up to the ten year reunion where she has three kids with three fathers, on her third shitty marriage and is seven months sober and clean from a heroin addiction. Yet you see her yearbook photo and walk down memory lane with her... then see her as she is now. Or for a woman to do the same with the Quarterback. The contrast is just... too much.

Live to Tell is part of her “True Blue” album, which was, when it came out, her best-selling album (her best-selling album is 1990’s “The Immaculate Collection”, which is basically a greatest hits album). In general, her True Blue album got big praise, one of reasons being Madonna’s voice and how it was stronger and less bubbly than it was before. In this era, Madonna showcases her versatility so well, and that’s one of the reasons why I personally think this was Madonna’s “height” if you will :D

Extra bittersweet for me...I grew up in the area where this movie was filmed. The opening scene is the way the "old" Franklin Tennessee and surrounding area looked.
