Not even the tank badges are of the correct vintage (they wouldn´t have survived anyway). I really can´t understand why so many people try to disguise their Russian boxers as BMWs. What do you gain from it? M72 and Urals do have their own character (you may like them or not, I do). There´s no need to disguise them as something different. 2 fun facts: the original R71 was never commissioned by the German military (SV engine too weak and prone to overheating in heavy terrain). And 2nd, overall production of R71 was 3.500 (three thousand five hundred). All the machines that were used in the war were private motorcycles which were commandeered with their owners. And exactly YOU would have found and restored one of them (at a bargain price, of course!)?

You have front wheel shimmy where the front wheel wobbles tighten the butterfly nut up under the gas mask container to minimise it. Nice bike though, got one myself.

I am a bit surprised by the assert that the R71 was adopted by the Wehrmacht. Refering to all the books I have in my library, Wehrmacht did not accept the change for differents reasons, in which was the fact that the R12 was the working horse of The army. The new R71 had the same fork, the same motor but a frame more expansive to produce and rear shocks. The R12 was produced 36008 pieces between 1935 and 1942 and the military ones are not so easy to identify. The fate of the R71 was very different. It was produced only 3458 pieces between 1938 and 1941. (datas come from BMW archiv) . In 1941, before the start of war against Russia, the R71 was sold to Russia and the production line began under the supervision of german ingenieurs. The life as Ural or Dniepr went with this last BMW lateral engine till they sell it to China... And this is the reason why we could, 30 years ago, buy Chang Jiang sidecars with the Foundry really degraded compared with BMW! The german army stopped ordering the R12 in 1942 and finally ordered BMW R75 with it's wonderfull three wheels drive. 18000 were produced between 1941 and 1944, aside the Zuendapp KS601. So, I apreciate the description made here under @KorbaVerde, which is honest. I would just add that the BMW insigna said as original from 1938 can shows that it is not a military one. the military one was painted grey as the bike (or brown or green) and the blue parts were just fine horizontal lines in relief as usual to figure the blue on coat of arms. Whatever may be, I like your bike!
