I can really say there is a big difference in the dynamic range compared to my oa4. which is one of the reasons I wanted to upgrade. I have not really noticed any big differences in de image quality in regards to the so called lower bitrate (which is a positive note). but still I would like Dji to bring a high bitrate option.

The reduced bitrate is probably due to the impressive efficiency. I am not convinced the bitrates are a "massive" step down. h265 is a lot more efficient at the same quality level than h264 is. More is not always better. Lets wait until we see some real world examples and comparisons before calling them out for trying to build an action cam that is so much more efficient as the rest.

Action 4 recorded in the same codec at 130mbs... You don't go below 100mbs on any 4k footage no matter which codec you use, it's the bare minimum and even at 100mbs you're still sacrificing a lot of quality in complex scenes. Professional camera users wont ven go below 200mbs in 4k and all a lot of ProRes 4k codecs go to 500+mbs ... If it was possible to retain quality at low bitrate then Sony would be doing it in their mirrorless cameras. It isn't, bitrate is information, higher resolutions need more bitrate/information to retain detail, its a fact of videography that DJI can't skirt

I am upgrading but this revelation is concerning. I hope a firmware upgrade will give us an HBR option. Keep complaining and they will most likely do it. Not everyone needs 4hrs of battery life.0

Action 4 is also H265. More efficient codecs take more processing power which is why they are not using AV1 which is what they would have to use to justify a bitrate reduction.

Even though I'm completely happy with the battery life of my osmo action 4, I think most of the mainstream users would benefit from the battery life improvement compared to the max bitrate. I like this decision, but I, too, would love to get an option for a high bitrate mode in a future firmware update.

The GoPro Hero 13 Black isn't "better" per se' in high bitrate mode... DJI has encouraged all the reviewers to compare the footage between the Hero 13 Black and Action 5 Pro. Let's just say DJI has put their money where their mouth is. They honestly WANT the comparison. You don't do that if you believe you are inferior. To my knowledge, GoPro hasn't requested or encouraged their reviewers to compare the 13 Black to the 5 Pro.

DJI has implemented a new high-resolution sensor in the A5P for low-light advantage, but the maximum video resolution is only 4K. This is primarily for HorizonBalancing. In footage without HorizonBalancing, almost all sensor data should be used, but they may have uniformly reduced the video size before RockSteady 3.0+. I think so because they have introduced HorizonSteady for 360 rotation compensation. If so, it is unlikely that the A5P will support 100Mbps+ in the future. Reviewers have found that the A5P footage has less detail in clouds and distant building walls than the A4, GoPro13, and Ace Pro. This may be due to the incompatibility of the new sensor and the existing lens. There have also been reports of abnormal lighting at the edges of objects and backgrounds. The A5P certainly offers high dynamic range and ISO, but the complex exception handling for various features seems to be poorly tuned for image quality.

Bitrate can really be a bit of a placebo. I’ve done extensive tests on my A7Siii and have settled shooting most of my footage at 45Mbps instead of the maximum of 200Mbps. Purely because there isn’t really a difference. If the codec is good then it doesn’t have to have high bitrate. Sometimes higher bitrate just takes up more storage space and more processing power.

thank you, I've done extensive testing with the 30mbps on a7siii's 4k24, colorgrades just as well as 100mbps. helps keep long recordings reasonable sized. was disappointed DJI's don't have a lower bitrate option on their drone/cameras. now that they do people are whining.

It can but it's also highly dependant on the scene. A stutaion with little movement or a single subject like a to camera will be fine however strap that to a bike or have a scene with all movement then you will start to struggle. I fully agree not every scene needs high Bitrate but there are some that will.

I didn’t realize how much faster the editing and rendering would be with the lower bit rate. The output still looks great but processes much faster. The trade off/compromise on bitrate works for me, first time using DJI long term GoPro user.

Action 5 Pro just got a firmware update. Pretty interesting but they didn't change the bitrate. This reminds me of when HTC went with a 4 mp camera sensor against the common thought that the more MP the better!

150+ mbit/s please, hero 11,12 and 13 does 200mbit/s with GoPro Labs. You can't get higher quality with lower bitrates it doesn't work that way. For 4k25 you want 100+ mbit/s for 4k60 180+ mbit/s.

Fair but I doubt more than 5% of sales will be FPV related. You guys should just stick to naked GoPros and whatnot. I wouldn't even bother with DJI if I were you. As far as DJI is concerned the O3 Air Unit and the upcoming O4 set ups should relieve you of the necessity of a second camera... Hahaha!

If the market is big enough for you to try and monopolize it, you should probably pay a little respect and do things because it’s right. I’m not even talking about bitrate at this point, it’s just a general rule that should be applied in a decent world, but it’s China we’re talking about. The bullies who ram Philippine boats because they don’t like to share water. With that out of the way, I do stick to GoPros when I’m flying the appropriate rig. Both full size and nakeds have their place, but let’s be clear, there’s no “You guys should just” in this case when we’re out here slapping RED Komodos on 8 inch props. FPV may seem small but it is fairly large in the professional space and continuing to grow.

I’m looking for a small camera to film inside malls and for low or artificial light vlogging and walking tours. I’m seriously considering this camera and also the Ace Pro but been waiting on this release to compare them. Do you think it’s as good as the Ace Pro for low light? Every low light vid with the action 5 I’ve seen looks over sharpened.

I got one yesterday. I have the original OA 1 and I think the image quality is better from it than the OA5. The bitrate is 50 from the 5 and 100 bits from the original OA. The 5, to me, looks over processed and over sharpened even with the sharpening and NR to -2 each. I hope DJI will release a firmware soon to update it. I was pretty excited for this new one but it has been a bit of a let down, IMO.

Great information. I’d love for you to get one and do a review. I’ve used the 4 for a long time for vlogging and it’s been awesome. Love the new features of the 5 Pro in particular for the audio, the speedy quick start and the improvements in low light. But don’t like the sound of the quality loss. I’ve ordered the adventure combo and comes this week. Will give it a try. Ps…if you want to do a comparison vs the v.4 let me know as I have 2 and can always lend you a copy of the 4 as long as you don’t strip it and take it apart and return it 😂

Hi, each product is different in there own way. Action 5 only has a bit rate of 60 MBps bitrate therefore for cinematic i vote for Gopro 12/13 where bitrate can go 120 MBps plus.

Very interesting. I didn't see anything from anybody else about the bitrate. Hopefully there will be a firmware update soon that allows a higher bitrate with the reduction of battery as a compromise. I don't need 4 hours of recording (I'd argue that most people using these would agree). The higher bitrate would be far more important to me. Mine should be here in 2 days, so I guess I'll get to see for myself when I'm traveling next week with it.

This is a very technical discussion that required me to listen carefully yet at the end this video does not add to my ability to decide if what is discussed translates to a value judgment about this new product. I watched Iphonedo's review - of course that is a cheerleading type review but impressed with what he did with it and impressed by the low light performance.

100mbps in hevc is still great. My GoPro 10 uses only 60mbps. Even my sony records in 60mbps but in h.264

@EditioCastigata I think your confusing bits with bytes. UHS -II is capable of 312 MB (bytes) a second. These cemeras are Mb ( bits) 100Mbps would only be 12MBs. There is massive headroom here even on micro SD.

Obviously, DJI's Camera Division doesn't care about FPV. Let's be honest, that's a REALLY small percentage of their Action Camera sales. Not to mention that they are hell bent to make it unnecessary for you to need a second camera with the O3 Air Unit and upcoming O4 Air Unit. Hey, if a given camera doesn't fit your needs, don't be mad, just don't buy it. Every product wasn't made for you. Simple.

I`m not sure why people should care much about the bit rate differences. The fact is, the image/video quality mainly depends on the sensor (size) and optics. In this regard, GP13 will be almost the same as GP12, and OA5 will be not too much different from OA4, except some software tweaks.

h265 is a bit more blurry at lossy compression than h264. At a too low bitrate the impression you’d get the impression a face beautify filter had been applied, or that the scene is slightly out of focus.

I alteady have one and start testing. I realy dont think that DJI can "hide" this fact from lets say PRO users but they shot themselves in the heel. On this very start of this product the sales could get choked because this bitrate limitations. I hope DJI will find, a solution for this like a oprion to turn on "at your own risk" that means overheating, which in OUR case (thats FPV pilots) is not the case because the camera gets cooled instantly. Random internet search, "what bitrate is required to film 4k video?" The bitrate required for 4K video depends on the frame rate and other factors, but it's usually between 30-60+ Mbps: Frame rate Recommended bitrate Standard (24, 25, 30 fps) 35-45 Mbps Try a search for yourself.

As a pro filmmaker for the past ±15 years i can certainly laugh with average Joe crying over some number. Whoever have used the mighty Canon C100 camera (2012) knows that bitrate means nothing if the rest of the hardware/software are doing what they supposed to. FYI, the C100 was an HD camera with max bitrate of 24mbps, that is still relevant in 2024. Small file sizes are a huge plus even on a bigger production, not to mention the action cam users around the globe. Never judge a book by its cover guys!

100% agree however those cameras don't tend to be used in fast high moving situations where you have all parts of the image constantly changing. Yes absolutely the codec and specifically the GOP structure is going to play a massive part but it needs to be able to put that data somewhere. On a low movement image with a longgop structure you can get away with a lot. However I have seen footage already where this is struggling. It's massively compressed.

DJI reply on Reddit: "Hello. We understand your concerns. Both the video bitrate and the chip encoding algorithm will affect the quality of the encoded video. If you do not focus on optimizing the encoding algorithm, the bitrate will increase to the encoding saturation point and the image quality will no longer be improved. Higher Bitrate does not necessarily mean better image quality. It all comes down to the codec, codec profile and level of the codec that is being used. There are many differences even within H.264 and H.265. Levels and Profiles are set of parameters used in the core compression algorithm for a particular codec. Each level and profile has a specific characteristic attached to it and results in different bitrates. For instance there are profiles with a higher compression to reduce the file size that does NOT result in a lower image quality but just requires higher processing power when coding and encoding it. When discussing this topic this needs to be mentioned!

Bitrate is information, higher resolutions need more bitrate to retain detail. If bitrate didn't matter then mirrorless cams wouldn't have raw and proRes codecs with 500mbs. A professional won't go below 200mbs in 4k let alone 100mbs which is just horrid compression

@@bingbong6127 ever heard about lossless compression? Or high efficiency compression that does not compromise image quality? According to your theory H.264 would have the same image quality as H.265 at the same Bitrate…😂

No!!! That would be a much less "clicky" video!!! Hahaha! I keep trying explain this to these guys but they are stuck on bitrate being the end all, be all of video quality.

It’s actually nice to know I can shoot high quality video and save space with a nice low bitrate. Been shooting more and more content, both paid and personal and I see that as a major bonus!

Law of diminishing returns also apply for video bitrates. Most of the reviewers who have authority in camera reviews say its quite good, I'll stick with that. And a number of them have said time and again that bitrate is not how cameras should be rated against.
