Yes, a free and cultural visit in the same sentence, something difficult to see in Spain, unfortunately. And I say this before commenting on the visit because in the United States it is common to be able to visit large museums for free, and there is no better way to promote culture, at least from my point of view. We are talking about public spaces, managed by public entities, aimed at citizens of any country. Yes, I think that these visits should be free for the promotion of culture.
Of course, I understand that each country and each public administration has its criteria and does what it deems appropriate. The maintenance of everything involved in a museum of these characteristics or even larger ones could be covered in the annual budgets, but it is a subject that could be discussed at length in a separate video.
Having said that, the visit is very interesting, especially for those of us who are from Madrid, as it tells us the history of the city from the time Philip II transferred the court to Madrid, until what happened at the beginning of the 19th century. A large number of rooms house different paintings, busts, models, tapestries and objects of all kinds and, in general, of great value.
The Prado Museum provides several paintings that increase the quality of the visit. The first floor is especially interesting, where they talk about that part of the Middle Ages in which Madrid, a small town located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, was chosen as the seat of the court of Felipe II. From there, the city grew and grew to a great size and was the epicenter of different events in the history of Spain.
For example, the room dedicated to the War of Independence is truly spectacular. It has some large and valuable canvases that are worth spending a lot of time on.
Also striking is a large model on the second floor where we can see the plan between the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande. Because the construction of the Almudena Cathedral was not planned, nor was the current viaduct.
So I recommend that you set aside an hour or two on any given morning to visit this great museum in Madrid.
