Madurai is the capital of the Kingdom of Pandiyas, the oldest and longest dynasty in the world. Madurai existed even before Saivism was founded. Originally, the Pandyas were Ajivikas later converted to Saivism in 7th century AD. The word Madurai come from the term Marudam, which means agricultural land. It is also known as Kadambavanam(Land with Kadamba flowers) and Koodal Nagar(koodal means assembly or gathering of people). People from all over the people came to Madurai, thats why the word Koodal Nagar.
