Rumor has it that she was years older then 88 at the time of her passing. She also never went out in sunlight if she could. She would walk under an umbrella and always in shade. She kept the curtains drawn in her apartment 24/7 to keep the skin damaging effects of the sun from damaging her incredible skin. It is also rumored that she did this so that she would remain in soft focus when she had visitors to her home. Towards the end of her life, she had a problem with diabetes, but it was kept from the public, because she thought that would be bad for her image as immortal. While making "Sextette" in 1978, she had an earpiece in her ear (hidden by her wig) to feed her lines to her. There was an embarrassing moment when her earpiece picked up a transmission from LAX airport (according to Tony Cutis, but I don't hold Tony Curtis to necessarily speaking the truth about anything), and she recited the airstrip that an airplane was cleared to land on as her dialogue. She was an incredible woman, a true, true legend, who not only set the standard for many things, but also broke the mold on many others. She was jailed for things she said and plays that she did, but nothing deterred her from being the liberated, powerful and outspoken woman that she wanted to portray onscreen and was, indeed, in life. (She even championed gay rights in the 1930s!) We may never see the likes of Mae West again. Her courage was truly inspirational.

Benzie Smith Well, it’s already been established what kind of moral character Tony Cutis had by leaving nothing at all to any of his several children by various mothers. Kinda amazing he was that jealous and insecure. It is true however, that Miss West, with literally her whole life on the stage, could and usually did steal “everything but the cameras while appearing “ Tony Curtis was pathetic.

The incredible Mae West did not die alone. Her partner of 27 years, Paul Novak, was by her side. Also, her funeral was in Hollywood but she was entombed in the family crypt in Brooklyn.

She insisted on Duke Ellington playing in her Movie 'Belle of the Nineties' 1934. It was his first movie. ( She fought hard for that one) They recorded an album together. I adored Mae West.

Actually, they didn't record an album together because of the time they recorded together it was 78 RPM records, not LP record albums.

It’s weird to think, she was born exactly 100 years before me in 1893. So if I get to live as long as her I’ll die in 2080. Life is too short 😞

Mae west has been a great screen movie icon in her long career

Wikipedia states her birth year was "1893", not "1892". Also, someone got her birthdate wrong as August "7", it was the 17th. And she died not alone but with close friends by her side including Paul Novak, her truly loving devoted and faithful companion of 27 years.

Mae West was the first original/creative/gutsy/beautiful/sexy woman with character, wit and humor to step forward. Without her; women's lib would have come much later, ... or maybe not at all.

She had a really fascinating personality and a brilliant career mostly on the stage from early childhood, some on screen and radio. She gave to charities secretly. She was ridiculed and dismissed as just a faded campy symbol, supposedly passe, but was far from that, a great advocate and pioneer of social progress and a legend in her time and later.

Amazing that someone who was not attractive by todays standards could control Hollywood and was capable of putting down a real beauty like Raquel Welch and get away wuth it. There was much more to May West that they are not telling us.
