Just in case anyone was wondering, the S.H.Figuarts Stormtroopers scale perfectly with this Vader. They are a smaller scale than all of the rest of the 6 inch offerings currently available from other companies and stand almost a head shorter than Mafex Vader, which is how it should be (Prowse was 6'7" and just about 7' in costume.) I was a little put off at first by what I perceived as a poor helmet sculpt, but the helmet molds varied between movies, and even within the individual movies when "stunt" and "hero" helmets were used (The helmets were produced in two different batches at different times, and they were then molded from two seperate original hand sculpted models.) Comparing reference photos, these are very close to the "hero" helmets seen in ANH. Sometimes, the black strip above the eye lenses was applied higher or lower depending on who prepped the helmets before shooting a particular seen. All in all, there wasn't a lot of standardization. Also, while certainly more expensive, the quality and paint apps on the S.H.Figuarts Stormtroopers blow the Hasbro Black series out of the water. They look fantastic next to fellow premium figure Mafex Vader, where the Black guys never really did. I'll try to take some pics and post a link this week. :)

+Eric Morneau My preferred trooper of choice, the Bandai model kit Stormtrooper, also look excellent next to the MAFEX Vader. I agree that getting it perfect to movie Vader, while the movie also changed it so much, is hard to do. I think a lot of people are just trying to match their own perceived version of Vader. And that's cool. MAFEX, for me, is 85% there, but still needs some tweaking. He still beats out all the rest.

No need to break the peg! If you carefully/slowly push down on MAFEX Vader's helmet, it seats lower on the head than you think and becomes much more stable. I think they kept it loose to avoid breakage.

I'm the same as you. It's not perfect but I was surprised in the end how this really turned out to be my favorite Vader by far. Funnily enough, I was disappointed with the helmet at first but I realized that strongly pushing it down actually made the helmet stick on his head a lot better than I initially thought. In your case, the peg seem to have broken but it actually gives that leeway to stick on his head a lot stronger like what I did with mine. Also if you don't mind customizing yours, try shaving down the excess plastic underneath his neck. Be careful not to cut off the actual neck parts of the helmet as well as the edges that are holding the ball joint intact (basically you're just thinning down the sculpt's surface). It actually gives enough room for his head to look down which really makes a huge difference in terms of the neck articulation.

Should I go for this Vader or wait till next year for the Revenge of the Sith version? It looks like they updated the head sculpt for that one but I really can only go for one Vader figure....if Mezco comes out with a 1:12 version I am soooo screwed

Hasbro's new Rogue One version is looking pretty nice too, and the price and availability of it will top all of them if it ends up as nice as the prototype. If you're thinking about holding off for the MAFEX ROTS one, might wait a little longer and see what the Hasbro one does, and then see who else decides to spring newer Rogue One versions on us.

I have the 1977 Vader Helmet. Not screen worn but was on set. Stamped "Don post 1977 blue harvest" inside. It indeed is matte and gloss. More matte than I expected so this is actually very accurate. At least he doesn't look like a sad Labrador retriever with a junk yards dog chain like the BS version. One must recall, it's designed to be Vader not Maul articulation wise. He doesn't move that way. I own 75 Vaders big and small, old and new. Id say this is superior to any except the sideshow. For $40-$50, I think this is an excellent Vader.

It is quite shiny in places. It's actually one of the most accurate. Ironically, there are videos saying this is too shiny. It captures the exact look of Vader and actually I'm wrong it's the ROTJ Vader. That's why he comes with a Stump, multiple hands, an Anakin head that is very detailed. He got shinier as the films moved on. I mean I like accuracy overall. I have Elite, SH Figuarts, all black Series 6" one and the smaller ones, and to me this gives the most bang for the buck. Just watch clips of the movies. He is shiny, in the places where Vader was shiny, but he also has matte in parts and this does too. And unlike most figures with the inaccurate silver chain, he even has the correct black chain.

If I had to do it again and not some scary accident I would try to get in there with a pair of nail clippers or wire cutters and snip a little bit of the peg at a time until the helmet sat down as far as it should. Safer that way because you definitely do not want to lose the whole peg.

I don't know man, not feeling him. The mixture of soft plastic and cloth, the skinniness, and the shoulder armor setup has me put off. I know those aren't problems with a lot of people, so this will probably be considered the best in many collector's eyes, but like you said, the model just represents how I see Vader in my own mind, and it works best for me, especially when fully painted up (Holy run-on sentence Batman). So have you found Black Series Wave 2 yet? Or the Target two pack?

I feel like the chest box and the shoulder armor sit too low. The model kit one looks closer to me, though maybe a bit high. It’s like they oversized the chest box on the model kit and shrunk the shoulder armor to compensate, while Mafex shrunk the chest box and blew up the shoulder armor instead. Somewhere between the two would be more accurate, I think, but the Bandai kit looks less immediately wrong to me. I do hate that cape, though. They did the same crap with the SH Figuarts Tuxedo Kamen from Sailor Moon. I need to see about getting a cloth cape for that, actually, now that I mention it...

Yea the only problem with the hasbro one is that you're not gonna get the better quality. I used to have a black series Vader a while back, and within an hour of taking it out of the package, one of his shoulder pads fell off, and his cape came completely detached.

+nokturnal02 the mafex is on order and will arrive soon i hope, but i have been looking at all vaders, and from my opinion mafex body is awesome, and i believe the revo head will be the perfect compliment to the mafex body. the Revo Vader is ok at first, but after you look at it for a few days, it looks too skinny.i removed the lame plastic wavey cape, and replaced it with cloth skirt and cape, looks way better now. but i still want the mafex it looks more powerful for a vader. hope this helped

You really need the 14.5" Disney Electronic Vader. It's absolutely amazing. The articulation is of this level except for the right arm with the electronic saber for obvious reasons, but even that rotates, goes up and down wrist swivel, etc. did my own review (which is crappy compared to your reviews, but I'm new to KZbin videos lol

Ratfink820 If you don't want to mess up your Black Series Vader but want to use that cape and robe, Walgreens has the Emperor's Wrath Vader out right now. Same cape and robes, $20. I usually preorder my MAFEX and Figuarts through Amiami and HLJ. Little bit quicker, although international shipping doesn't make it much cheaper.

+Pepe Perez I'm not a fan of the Elite die cast, so I'd go MAFEX if you want something that fits into 6 inch scale. The Elite is larger, like a 7 inch scale, and I don't think it's as articulated.

I pretty much agree with +Jirizo the SHF is small, almost Luke's height. Between those two go for the MAFEX. My personal favorite is the model with the Black Series cape added but that's not for everyone.

Nice review. I just got mine in today and haven't been able to stop fiddling with him. I accidentally broke that stupid helmet peg on mine, too. LOL The wire in the cape is nice for dynamic poses, but kind of sucks if you just want it to hang straight down over his shoulders. Straightening the wire only seems to make it want to curl, so I've yet to find a good method of doing it. I was looking for a good Vader to go with my Hasbro Black Stormtroopers, and this guy almost fits the bill... almost. His scale is just a tad smaller, so while the height difference is great, his upper torso and head look small compared to troopers. It's not a deal breaker, but they do look slightly out of place when posed together. (Anyone know of any Troopers slightly smaller than the Hasbro figs?) I was really surprised to see the different finishes applies to the face mask. The alternating matte and shiny finish is emulating the actual mask paint scheme used in the films (at least in ESB and ROTJ.) They painted the alternating face panels a dark silvery grey so the details and different contoured shapes would pop and also avoid getting lost when filming dark scenes and angle shots. I guess I can appreciate the attention to detail, but it's a totally unnecessary thing for the figure. My only other major gripe with the figure is that the chest guard is much lower than it should be. I was hoping I would be able to trim it up, but it just covers the upper torso hinge, so that's not an option. It wouldn't stick out so badly if they had painted the stripes grey instead of silver. I don't know where they got that color from. I'll probably repaint it at some point.

+Eric Morneau I dig your explanation of the alternating matte and gloss blacks on the mask, and it made me realize why the Bandai model kit Vader's helmet details are lost in pictures. Because it is all gloss black, stuff just disappears and it doesn't look as good as it does in person. May have to see what can be done with some paints. The chest armor being low, making the chest box look low too, is also one of my minor nits. Grey is more movie accurate, isn't it?

there's five in the six inch scale and all are so disappointing. if only figuarts put as much resources into Vader as they did with Captain Phasma or Kylo Ren or the Battle droids or Darth Maul. I'm sorry but in my opinion, Darth Vader deserves the utmost, best engineering from any company attempting to design him. He's a central figure for crying out loud!!! what gives!?!! this is why i haven't purchased a six inch Vader yet!!! they all blow!!!

Honestly not a fan of the look of the Mafex Vader. Too thin, the chest plate too long, making the chest box sit to low on the stomach. Then the face/helmet is way too small. Then the sculpt is too odd. If the Hasbro is "sad walrus" then the Mafex looks like "happy boy". It just looks like there is a joyfull look in it, compounded with how small it is, he looks goofy. To bad, the Figuarts is too damn small though I like it more. Then how have the nature of the model kit, being well....a model and not a toy. If i could get the soft goods of a combined Hasbro/Mafex, the body mold of figuarts and articulation with the model kit's helmet sculpt, then I would have the perfect Vader. Im happy with the black series if it had better articulation and a better head sculpt. But there is too much wrong too with the Mafex.

+The Fwoosh I ordered the Mafex! Saved up! So I should finally have my top of the line Japanese Vader. I've tried to get Kai Arts 12x and each time it was either not sent it was a bootleg with the head merely glued on.

This Mafex is a Horrible figure. If you want quality/good price, ArtFx has an amazing couple of Vaders for a great price. And if you're after the perfect 3.75" try to get hold of a wave 6 black series #3 darth vader. Unbeatable design/paint/sculpt. and they fixed the wobbly head too.
