Great video. I love the comparisons between two products from different companies. I bought the ML when it came out, and to be very honest it was the price point (dare I say Hasbro was not expensive!) value that really sold me. The accessories on the Mafex are nice to have but at the price, most of them will be sitting in the bin waiting for me to pose with them so their value is less to me. I love the Diamond MS Venom and am curious to know if you would be doing any Venom comparisons shortly - considering all the product just released from ML lately.

For me, Mafex wins, but only for figures with capes. I love their wire posed capes. But other than that, the regular version will do.

Good comparison. One thing that seems to get tossed really quickly that sticks out to me is that you say if you have Pizza Spider-Man, or RYV Spider-Man, you can use those alt heads for Retro Symbiot Spider-Man. By saying that I feel like the RS Spiderman isn’t a $25 figure anymore. Now it’s a $50 or more figure because I need to buy another Spider-Man to make a better comparison because of the alt head. Also the price point isn’t that huge of a gap if you buy from an import site. Mafex Black Suit Spider-Man cost roughly $90 after shipping. If you buy it from a place like BBTS, then yes it would be around the price you mentioned because they love to mark up prices, and you also have to pay taxes. Otherwise, again, really good comparison. Excellent job.

Thanks for the very informative review. I was about to buy the Mafex until I saw your review. I already had my Marvel Legends variant for months and didn't appreciate it enough. The proportions are perfect with great articulation. Comes with the necessary hands as well. The mafex one as you stated doesn't look proportional. Too big of a head, small hands etc. To me the only thing mafex has over this is the accessories. Othernthan that, the marvel legends is a better buy. Especially when they release the Vhs line symbiote which is gonna have cell shading and the ryv body and comes with carnage. Still under $100.

Love the vids. What mic do you use to record? I'm assuming you aren't recording your voice in post. I cant get either of my lav mics to sound half as decent as this.

I use a Fifine Technology lav mic and record on a Canon Vixia HR800. The HR800 only accepts mics with a power supply, so finding a good one was a challenge. I also found that adjusting the volume level in my camera settings to a lot lower than what it wanted to record eliminating most of my feedback issues. Rarely, it does glitch, but I am mostly happy. Hope that helps!

In general, I would say if you could only ever have one Spider-Man figure, you can't go wrong with the classic red and blue. Also, the reissue is cheaper than this figure. Don't get me wrong, I love this one, but I don't see a particularly huge leap in quality between this Mafex and the Legends aside from accessories. The red and blue has a lot more sculpted and painted detail.

The Hasbro version of the symbiot Spidey is more playable then the mafex version because the limps come apart and the mafex is mostly just for possing . Plus the Hasbro version is more durable. Because it's made also for kids. Mafex is only for adults. And it's over rated . And it cost to much. But it has its own good in it. .soon Hasbro will continue to improve in it's articulations for a lowered price. While those with mafex find themselves putting the limps that keep falling of it's mafex figures when they play with them. I know this from my experience. So I call this one a tie. Because mafex will probably take care of it's own problem. Too . But . You dint real need to many articulations. If your figures limps keep falling off like your mafex. .does. you have to be lucky to get one that doesn't come apart when you play with them . So I give this one to Hasbro. Even though it's just your basic pose . It's more simple to play with. Mafex is for posing mostly. And to expensive inn a time when Hasbro is price hiking it's figures. During this inflation.

I'm honestly very happy with the Hasbro. The only things that would have made it better would have been pinless joints and maybe an alternate head. That said, I have been wanted a web backpack for a while so that was nice.

For me, the more packed in value, the better, BUT I get what you mean. In the case of this figure, I didn't need THAT many webs, or the stand, or magnetic hands and feet, but it did help me feel like I got my money's worth. That said, I'd have liked it if Hasbro gave theirs a head with a 5 O'clock shadow since it's unique to this version. I don't know, a balance is good.

The only figures that look good using the boot swivel are the iron man figures I. My opinion. Because most have big boots, they are able to hide the swivel better than a character with a skin tight suit like Spiderman. The Spiderman boot swivels look like some on sawed his leg off and put it back in in a different direction.

I have the Mafex version. Quality control is really bad with this figure. A lot of Black Spidermans have loose legs. It's a good figure, but a pain in the neck to have to get certain things fixed here and there, and then asking for replacement parts. In my opinion, you're better off getting Marvel Legends, because of better quality control and lower price point. When it comes to Mafex, it's only worth $100 price tag if it's detailed, like Cyborg Superman!

3:20 never seen that infamous cover image altered to where the sole of the foot is grey. Looks so bizarre, yet so not out-of-place. You know, more realistic with the lack of blue highlights. Just looks more drab.

Unfortunately, the Spider-Man from that set is just a repaint of the smaller, Ultimate Spider-Man buck, so it does have pins; however, the Hasbro Pulse Animated Series cell shaded Black Suit Spider-Man that comes with Carnage is pinless AND has the toe joints

A buddy of mine has a trick for that. I haven't tried it but he swears by it. He gets bags of tiny multicolor rubber bands and twists them into loose joints to reinforce them. He says they tuck into the joints and aren't obvious

These days, I will usually place multiple pre-orders. For Marvel legends, generally it's big bad toy store, amazon, and Hasbro pulse. Unless I find it in store before one of them ships, as soon as one ships I cancel the others in the hopes of getting the item as fast as I can. Otherwise, I find that Target in store usually works pretty well for me, and also GameStop. Hope that helps!

I love MAFEX figures, but I still get the Hasbro counterparts anyway just because I feel more comfortable playing with them than with the MAFEX. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying MAFEX are fragile but I'm scared of ruining my expensive plastic, lol. MAFEX figures look great but they are the type of figures to take out only when you are planning a photo session. Marvel Legends are more practical in that matter. Both are good in their own way tbh :P

Just for the way the Legends' spider is broken up at the diaphragm/ab crunch makes me not like it. The pins don't help either, however that's not a deal breaker for me with figures. Also, it doesn't help that I actually broke my Legends Spider-Man almost out of the packaging because his right leg thigh cut was stuck and I basically twisted it off.

I have the ML version, and he’s all I need. The Mafex is cool, but the Carny hands and exorbitant price tag are no-gos for me. Accessories a-plenty is fantastic, which I wish ML Spidey came with more, so the Mafex does shine there. Overall, I am happy with my ML version.

3:35 So the Mafex silhouette has the issues with the upper torso and pelvic area protruding out, while the legends has the roles in the lower abdomen like an inner tube, and the tumor looking growths from the thighs. You can finagle the shoulder heights on Mafex, but the legends has that sloping look. The Mafex is intended to be more dynamically posed, but I don't think the anatomy on the legends one looks quite as good in a vanilla pose. At least hasbro captured the bulkier look of Peter at that time...especially with getting the head and eyes just right.

The thing that ruins mafex for me is the tiny wrist pegs that break off so easily. I paid a hefty aftermarket fee for a deadshot a few months ago (130$) and a month later the wrist peg snapped off ever so easily too. I’m gonna go with legends from now on. And it does look better too. The sculpt looks more natural
