TikToker Good Trouble gave the perfect response to a fellow TikToker who had the audacity to claim the policy platforms of both the Republicans and Democrats never switched back in the day, saying that Democrats, and by extension, anyone on the left, have an inherently flawed understanding of their political views and the Party because they were the ones who owned slaves, completely ignoring all the reason why the party switch happened in the first place. Rick Strom breaks it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

Interesting that so many of them say “we can’t erase history, history is history” - they are so proud of their history, when blacks teach about that same history and what life was like for their ancestors during that time- they say “move on…this shouldn’t be taught in schools” Sounds to me like they’re pretty comfortable with seeing history erased or rewritten.

It's ridiculous that these people claim this flag is part of their heritage. It was only used for 3 years. The Swatiska flag in Germany was used for more than 23 years, 12 of which were used as the official Reichsflagge. Nobody here would say it is part of our heritage. Part of our history, yes. But never part of our heritage.

1. The flag they are referring to is a confederate battle flag, not the Confederate Flag. 2. The Democrats that opposed civil rights left the Democratic party and eventually joined the Republican party, and vice versa. 3. Most of those Confederate statues are not historical Civil War artifacts, they were put up during the civil rights movement to intimidate minorities. 4. We should not learn from monuments to hate and racism. MTG is not racist because she wants to keep the Confederate statues up, she wants to keep the statues up because she is a racist.

The New Jim Crow In the 1990s the Democratic Party revived itself, in part by distancing itself from Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition. [239] Jackson was the first African-American to win a major party primary in 1988. Blacks were getting a little too uppity in the eyes of the Clintons and Democratic party leadership.[240] Clinton defeated the incumbent George H. W. Bush in 1992, was the beneficiary of reduced defense spending with the end of the Cold War and a balanced federal budget. Clinton proposed welfare reform (cutting benefits and requiring many recipients to take jobs). Labor unions, which had been steadily losing membership due to globalization since the 1960s, found they had also lost political clout inside the Democratic Party: Clinton enacted the NAFTA free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico accelerating globalization and job loss over the strong objection of these labor unions. Under the Clintons and the 1994 Biden Crime Bill, more than 250,000 African Americans were imprisoned in the United States than under President Reagan,[241] Both Hillary Clinton and Joseph Biden took credit for mass incarceration.[242] Cumulatively since the Clinton's passed the Biden Crime Bill, 2.5 million adult black males-more than 10% of the population-were incarcerated, splitting up black families.[243] Barack Obama, Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton led the Million Man March on Washington to protest.[244][245] In a eulogy loaded with racist dog whistles, here's what Bill Clinton said at the grave of his mentor, Sen. J. William Fulbright: "We come to celebrate and give thanks for the remarkable life of J. William Fulbright, a life that changed our country and our world forever and for the better. . . . In the work he did, the words he spoke and the life he lived, Bill Fulbright stood against the 20th century’s most destructive forces and fought to advance its brightest hopes.[246] So spoke President William J. Clinton in 1995 of a man who was among the 99 Democrats in Congress to sign the “Southern Manifesto” in 1956. The Southern Manifesto declared the signatories’ opposition to the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education and their commitment to segregation forever. Fulbright was also among those who filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964. That filibuster continued for 83 days.

I'm British so my knowledge of US history might be lacking and frankly I can't be bothered to check this time, but even I, non-American, seem to recall from my school education in the UK sixty odd years ago, that in the 1860s (?) the Democrats and Republicans switched views, the Parties switched platforms. So when using history, usually very important, it can't always be relied upon in the mindsets of bigots in particular. My apologies if my memory is wrong here and even if it is it proves how important history is and how we need to keep checking it if we want to grow up and better the world we live in.

You're right. After the Civil War, the republican party supported civil rights for former slaves, but by the 1870s, northern industrialists who had grown rich from the war entered politics. These wealthy politicians didn't see why they should support the civil rights of black Americans when the country was largely white. It wasn't until the depression when Franklin Roosevelt became president that there was a major shift in party ideologies.

That and the southern oligarchs gained massive power after the invention of the cotton gin; which allowed them to buy out all the small farmers. They were afraid the northerners were going to take their power and wanted to create their own little fiefdom. And they got all the average folk to go along with it by getting them riled up about “states’ rights”; which of course included slavery. The average white people wanted to keep black people “in their place”. They really didn’t get how they were being used by the wealthy plantation owners who wanted their own little kingdom.

OMMMGGG. Best way you could have said this. It’s always abt Democrats vs Republicans. We need to stop trying to compete and trying to work together. Both parties should be about human rights.

No more *wrong* history is the key word here, I believe. Anything where the US did something bad (like genocide against the native Americans, slavery) is bad history that must not be taught, everything where the US did something right (often by chance) must be amplified and if the 2nd topic is a bit small, just make up stuff by reversing history to drive home just how great of a country the US really is! How it did never assassinate elected politicians in foreign countries, how it never staged coups and military takeovers anywhere in the world. How the US has always been the seed of freedom and democracy in the world, selflessly suffering while helping others. Amen.

The Confederate Flag is not southern heritage. Their Southern heritage flag should be the white flag. That was what their forces waved as we drove them to the sea during the civil war. Why do we have to keep explaining their racist beliefs to them? Are they really that thick?

Their Heritage SMH. The Confederacy lasted a whopping 5 years. That's the Heritage they want to preserve.
