"The vegetables supplied here in the Philippines, 70% of which come from the Cordilleras. I really need to practice organic agriculture, and the challenge here is our problems with pests and diseases, and we can't use insecticides. So that's really the challenge, controlling pests and plant diseases. At present, many methods for controlling or eradicating these pests have been discovered, and examples of these include the use of biological control agents such as microbial agents. The deadly pests and plant diseases are managed through the use of botanical plants or herbs, such as verbena, whose extracts are lethal to pests. So these fast-growing plants or microbes also require research to determine their effectiveness and where they should be used, what's best or what diseases they should be used for, because not all botanicals are effective against all insects. We need to research to determine the target pests, and this is what we will distribute to the farmers for use in organic farming. The Bureau of Plant Industry, Baguio National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center, or KIB-NCR, DepEd ESC, had a project titled "Enhancing the Utilization of Microbial and Botanicals for Organic Agriculture" with the support of key stakeholders in the Cordillera Administrative Region. This was funded by the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agricultural Research, and it started in January 2015. We found that Trichoderma, one of the biological agents we used, is effective against soil-borne diseases and helps control diseases originating from the soil. It also aids in the decomposition of... ...materials and kills pests such as nematodes in the soil. Another one that we can use is effective against what we call thrips or green moscardon, and Beauveria is effective in controlling pests, especially in tomatoes and peppers. These two agents gradually kill insects, especially larvae. A thousand are killed, so the insects that feed on them and damage the plants are gone, resulting in better yields and increased income for farmers. Regarding botanicals, based on our research results, chili and ginger extracts are effective against tomato pests and bell peppers. We can say that these two botanicals are effective because they kill insects, and the oil or extracts of these plants are even better for those without a signal. In our project, the promotion of technology, so the production of Trichoderma, we distribute it to the farmers so they can produce it for their own use on their farms. They need to obtain the pure culture from institutions that produce Trichoderma, such as the Bureau of Plant Industry and the Benguet State University. Then, for inoculation, they need the right rice and water, which they should wash well to remove dirt. They will cook it, and after cooking, they'll put it in a plastic container. If there are no plastic containers available, glass containers can also be used. The Trichoderma will be cultured nationally. One plate number of Trichoderma can be divided into small pieces, about 32-40 slices. Then, they will take a small island, and that island will be planted on the substrate placed in the container. After that, it will be placed in an area that is not too hot or too cold, so the Trichoderma can grow. That's the process of cutting Trichoderma at the village level. I also use it in farms infected or invested with soil-borne diseases. To apply it, they'll prepare the area, then add chicken manure, followed by the Trichoderma suspension. One pack of Trichoderma will be mixed with 15 liters of water, then it will be sprayed on the farm where chicken manure has been added. After spraying, the chicken manure and Trichoderma must be mixed into the soil immediately so the Trichoderma doesn't die right away... ...in the soil. Then, they'll wait for at least 1 to 2 weeks. The purpose of adding water is to balance the soil and address any soil-borne disease problems before planting to protect the plants against soil-borne diseases. They'll wait for the soil to improve for at least two weeks. After two weeks, they'll do a second application. What they do is spray it again on the soil to make the soil hostile. The suspension recommended by the Bureau of Plant Industry is better in the afternoon or when it's cooler because its effectiveness lasts longer, and the story is, it's easy to grow or germinate. It can also be used on various vegetables, not just on potatoes and cabbages. It can also be used in gardens and bus stops because that's where we tested Trichoderma in our project. There are other types of agents called nutrition and Gloria, which are used to control pests, specifically on tomatoes and peppers. Our project involves the use of botanicals. In our project, we found out that chili and ginger are effective against pests, so for tomatoes, it's effective against whiteflies, and for sweet peppers, it's effective against aphids. It's better to apply it in the afternoon because if it's hot at noon, our plants might burn. If it rains, we don't have to worry about wasting our mist because it will also wash away the plants. That's why we apply it in the afternoon. This is a good way to manage waste. For our farmer colleagues, you are welcome to come to BPI if you want to avail of microbial agents like Trichoderma to counteract soil-borne diseases or Metarhizium or Beauveria for pest control. Nag try po ako guumamit ng trichoderma sa palay para ma control yung rice blast na problema ng mga rice producers, success naman yung experiment ko ang tanong ko lang yun po bang bunga ng palay na ginamitan ng trichoderma ay may mga naiwan po ba na.. or embedded na po ba yung trichoderma dun sa palay?
