Excellent example of working-class culture, back then. The bit at the end reminds me of when I told my mum I was thinking about going to Uni. Her response, in a concerned and caring way: "Aww, whit d'ya waunty do that fur son - Universities irr fur clever people".

The actor playing the doctor was Walter Carr....famously in The Wicker Man singing a weird song about sex as the kids dance round the Maypole

A real blast from the past! This was a cult show at the time. There were very few Scottish dramas on TV and even fewer that were based on the lives of ordinary working class people. Like most of the shows from the period it hasn't aged well, slow uneventful storylines and ham acting along with some dodgy sets. It's fascinating to see Glasgow at that time, it was undergoing a massive transition from heavy industry and the sweeping away of substandard slums which were replaced by cheap modern housing that quickly became replacement substandard slums. I wonder what would've become of Maggie in the intervening years, she would be approaching retirement now in 2023.

Don't know how old you are but being born in 1963 (London not Glasgow tho) I can confirm that was the way back then. Her dad is quite reasonable compared to many of the time. Attitudes have changed massively over 40 years mainly for the better. Never seen this series before and loved it for the nostalgia and memory jogs from that period. 😊
