Love learning something new! Thanks for teaching us about Dreys today! Yes, we have lots of ground squirrels where I live in CA and they always try to dig up our barn foundation. 😩 As a kid helping my cousins with Audubon Society orphans one of my jobs was rocking baby grey squirrels or baby possums in a sock. Apparently they need the vestibular input to develop normally. Baby squirrels grow in the swaying trees and baby possum in mama pouches that rock as they amble along. I loved that job a lot!!

Howdy, Carol! Thank you for sharing about your experience helping out at Audubon! Awe... what a sweetheart you were for rockin' those babies! We don't have the ground squirrels, but I saw plenty at the Grand Canyon! Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

Interesting about the dreys. The Grey Squirrel is a pest it drove out all our red squirrels which we only have in a few places in the UK like Scotland. Tfs. 🥰😊

Howdy, Màrgaret! I first learned about dreys from a third grade student from the UK! Her parents were studying at Yale University in New Have where I taught. Yeppers... those grey squirrels should never have been introduced to the UK. Invasive species are hard on the natives. Just like the starlings that were brought from the UK here many years ago! Thousands of them gather together and take all the food from other blackbird species. Well... I guess we have to be somewhat tolerant of immigrant critters... it's not their fault. I always love your nature journaling information you share. We have quite an eastern grey squirrel population including some of the black variety that we had never seen prior to moving to Berks County, PA. A highlight of our past spring was looking out the kitchen door at just the right moment and seeing mama black squirrel and three littles coming down the oak tree to the ground. They are such fun to watch as they race here and there. I'll have to do an update count to see how many dreys we have on our property. I'll check out Mary Holland's website. Thanks for introducing her to us.

Howdy, Denny! Thank you for sharing about the black squirrels! So cool you got to see the mama and young ones. I believe folks have seen black squirrels in Connecticut.. but I haven't... yet. Apparently they're grey squirrels with a missing gene. I have seen the white "grey" squirrel, though. Thanks for coming along today! Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

Thanks for the info-- didn't know the nests are called dreys. Learn something new every day! We have lots of grey squirrels around. Once in a very blue moon there is a reddish one. I've been told that decades ago there were more red ones here. Really cute stickers! That BG paper worked out really nicely. 😄

Howdy, Diane! Thank you for sharing about your grey and red squirrels. Some folks say the larger grey ones take over areas from the smaller red ones. The American red squirrels, I think, are a more northern species. Don't see them everywhere. Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

Very interesting, I love squirrels, we have grey ones where I live in the UK. I love to watch them in my garden on the feeders. I didn't know their nests are called dreys and I'll be looking out for them on my dog walks.

Oh what an amazing video Patty, encouraging us to look up ( it was so muddy during our walk this morning I forgot ) there is always tomorrow. We have loads of grey squirrels, but red squirrels can only be found in few places, one being Bromnsea Island just off the South coast. Thank you so much for sharing you’re wonderful nature journal ❤

Howdy, Janet! Thank you for the kind words and for letting me share a tiny bit of New England nature with you. Sometimes the grey squirrels are white... and that's an amazing sight to see! There was one up the lane and I got a quick video of it. Didn't see it much after that though. Love going on walks with you and Freddy! Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

Did not know they were called drey's. I can spot them though. I have seen several around the hillside here. Saw a squirrel in my yard today! They are so cute!! The ones I see are very high up too. They like a great view apparently!! Did I tell you I have flying squirrels living in my attic? They have been there for years. At night they come out and fly around the trees. Sometimes I hear them up there, in the attic in the evening before their nightly flight, but they are quiet guests, so I leave them alone. Cute page for the squirrels!!

Howdy, Rachel! Thank you for sharing your squirrel stories! I've seen a few flying squirrels here in CT and a few back in PA. You're so lucky you've got them close by! Watch out they don't do any damage up in the attic! They are amazing critters! Love their big eyes. Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

I love this information Patty! We have tons of gray squirrels here in Virginia and you see dreys everywhere although I didn't know they were called that. Surprisingly you see a lot along side our two lane roads dangling on branches right over the road! I can't imagine why they would build them in those trees. I'm going to go out and see how many I can find in my neighborhood. Blessings, Helen

Interesting! I didn't know they were called dreys. I googled and discovered there are 8 different species of squirrels in Texas with 3 species of squirrels in my area: the eastern gray squirrel, the eastern fox squirrel, and the southern flying squirrel.

Howdy, Esta! Thank you for sharing about the squirrels in your area! We don't have those big fox squirrels here. And we have the northern flying squirrel. Do you have ground squirrels? They look like giant chipmunks! Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO

Where are the black squirrels and the squirrels with the little tufts of fur on their ears? Do they have dreys too?
@JustJournalingwithPossumPatty Жыл бұрын
Howdy, Dolores! Yeppers... lots of tree squirrels make dreys. Lots of tree squirrels live in tree hollows. Black squirrels are really grey squirrels. They are tree squirrels. Red squirrels are tree squirrels, too. Obviously, the ground squirrels do not make dreys high up in trees. Thanks for the question. Blessings & Bunny Bubbles...oooOOO

Interesting. I never knew they were called dreys. I wonder if the info in her book would be relevant to me here in Ontario Canada….by Lake Erie?
@JustJournalingwithPossumPatty Жыл бұрын
Howdy, Melissa! You may have several of the same species as Maine (Northern New England)... don't know if the timing would be the same. When I used the book in Pennsylvania, the timing was a bit earlier... for you, probably a bit later! Blessings & Bubbles...oooOOO
