Tim actually has a really good quote about his special that relates exactly to what you said: *"It’s a fundamentally funny thing for me. On the surface, [he’s] an entirely narcissistic bully, and then you can play off some really sad, pathetic qualities in that person. I’m glad you picked up on that. It’s woven throughout. If you read between the lines of this character, he’s in a really bad place, he’s an alcoholic, he’s got a bad relationship with his wife ... or ex-wife."*

It takes alot of charisma and balls to do a set like Tim's becaue you risk the audience not laughing at the intentional bad humor and also thinking that is your actual personality, but he pulled it off.
@anyotherdayortime

Stewart Lee has made a career out of doing a similar thing to Tim's "An evening with tim heidecker" special, if you havn't seen any of his specials (or the series he did for the bbc) i'd recommend trying to find them. One of his recurring bits is telling a joke, it not getting a laugh or as much of a laugh as he wanted, then stopping the show to explain the joke to the audience in a patronising manner, scolding them for not getting the joke.
@SolarFlairIsBestPony

I usually find Tim's comedy doesn't hit for me. Its not that he's never funny, but often his material is somewhere in the land of committing too hard to not going hard enough or just going really hard on something that wasn't interesting enough to go hard on. You're right that not being funny in just the right way that its funny is hard... and I don't think he pulls it off.

One thing i found extra amusing about Tim’s standup is that he’s been working on those “jokes” for over a decade, honing the character at actual standup nights. If that's all it is, Schneider's bracket doesn't have a ton of followers to make it work We have a sea of comedians on this platform known as influencers. Explaining the joke is peak comedy, or it would seem so with all the reaction videos. Everybody wants in on the discussion Breaking things down that way can work, it would just seem to work best when you hold the clipboard as opposed to doing a bit. Schneider's career seems to have been being rolled up in the gig economy. It's not really his life's work, showing us the scope of humor. He's usually just the buffoon His bit is literally the Waterboy/Nicky character. He's the part of us that wants to blurt, but normally we wait for the idiot with no impulse control We're _probably_ all thinking the same thing, but nobody is that stupid to try the mob, except...

That Dave Rubin bit is so... sad, the guy is heartbroken that the public is not laughing, it really shows how if it were not because they are "warriors in the cultural war against cultural Marxism" or whatever they call themselves... no one would give them the time of the day, and they are TERRIFIED of that thought. They are not funny, they are no likeable, they are useful as long as they parrot conservative talking points, and like Milo proved a few years ago, the moment they stop being useful they will be thrown away like trash.

Upon rewatching it on the SNL KZbin page, I realized the sketch itself kinda sucked and what I actually found funny was my dad's impression of it and the various ways we'd incorporate it into our own life (ex. my mom telling us "would you quit quoting that sketch already?!" and us replying "the mom-sterrrr, gettin angryyyyy"). Professional Comedian Rob Schneider being outdone at his own game by an Eastern European immigrant he'd probably do an offensive portrayal of in an Adam Sandler movie.

It's funny because he's criticized in this video for his "incredibly racist jokes" getting him fired from SNL and at the time of writing, he's hosting in a couple weeks. So here’s what I think, and why I think Tim’s humor is beneficial. It’s observational humor that goes over the heads of people not acknowledging the absurdity of it. So it can really be a barometer of a person you’re just getting to know. Like the episode of On cinema at the cinema where he endorses trump. Even through all the stumbling and stammering I could see a trump supporter not familiar with heidecker to use that clip as a way to unironically (and by its nature ironically) “own the libs”. For the uninitiated, Tim also has a limited series where he (in the same fictional version of himself as his standup) meets up with a fellow standup comic and they find each other hilarious. It’s called Tim and Gellman have Lunch. A great look at this same character from another angle.

It's so absurd. I just discovered it today. It's amazing that they can make terrible jokes, lack of self awareness, and cruelty so hilarious. I just saw 1000 Cats for what I think might be the first time, even though I watched Funny or Die on HBO when it aired. That is an amazing piece. I think it doesn't translate if you don't know Gellman though. Tried to share it with girlfriend and she cringed and prayed for it to be over.

Not that this vindicates him, but Schneider doesn't need to wear "yellowface." His grandmother was from the Philippines. People don't think of him as racially Asian because he's not "culturally" Filipino. Well, neither are Lou Diamond Phillips or Tia Carrere.

I knew a comedian who was, let's just say, not nearly as funny as he thought, and pretty much remarked backstage after every show that it was a "bad crowd" that night, even if the other comedians were killing it. After a while, another comedian I knew went on stage and just did the whole set as an impression of the first guy, being arrogant and hostile toward the audience, and it was such a great bit that even people who never heard of the first guy were laughing out loud.

I'm not one to defend Rob S., but it's really crappy that I'm four minutes in and the video has strongly implied that he's white, when really he's quarter-Filipino, half-Jewish, and quarter-misc. If you're going to talk about who should say what about race, that seems like a glaring omission at best, deception at worst.
@jeanclaudevanswag
@jeanclaudevanswag Ай бұрын
Looking back, I think Maggie’s point still kind of stands because: A) Rob is still partially white and has the ability to pass as white, and has played characters who are white, which is probably why Maggie thought he was full white.. B) Does acknowledging his heritage change the fact that these depictions are still racist caricatures? Rob’s played a Native American and a Mexican; are those Asian? Also, if we can acknowledge that Long Duk Dong is racist, because even though the actor is Asian, he’s still putting on an exaggerated Chinese accent (the actor is a Japanese-American man from Utah) and written as stereotypically as possible. So even if Rob was probably cast in these roles because he looked ethnically ambiguous, it doesn’t take away the fact that the characters he’s playing are blatant caricatures (Rob has done literal brown face too), and that Rob can lean into whiteness when it benefits him, something that he could not do if he were full Filipino.
