Lea Salonga - On My Own (Les Misérables) - FIRST TIME reaction - has arrived! Also, so excited to bring you my NEW FREE Vocal Course: "Sing Better Instantly! skl.sh/3aHdSuy and Patreon - / maggierenee
Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga, OL, (/ˈleɪə səˈlɒŋɡə/) is a Filipina singer and actress, best known for her roles in musical theatre, for supplying the singing voices of two Disney Princesses (Jasmine and Mulan), and as a recording artist and television performer.
"On My Own" is a solo from the 1980 musical Les Misérables for the part of Éponine. Beginning in the key of D major, modulating to Bb major, then ending in F major, this is the most important song for the role of Éponine. In the song, she expresses her unrequited love for the character Marius, and how she dreams of being at his side but knows his love is for Cosette and not for her.
Les Misérables colloquially known as Les Mis or Les Miz is a sung-through musical and an adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics), and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics).

It's musically a gorgeous version. Personally I prefer the original Frances Rufelle version, though. While musically inferior, I find that actually suits the character better. In general that's what I like about the Original London Cast. It seems to fit the story better. Some of the later versions were too polished to my liking.

“I was in an environment where there were a lot of singers were celebrated for being belters. That made me ask myself back then, ‘Where do I fit in because I don’t really do this-my voice quality is really different.’ Do I have a place in music? But then Miss Saigon happened and that was where my voice found its fit.” Lea is not really known for high belting. She’s known for the quality of her voice, her proper technique without ruining her voice- she’s gone thru that during first year of MS. She’s made a name in the industry that songs are adjusted or written for her.

And yes she is the only 2x Disney princess. Disney bestow her as a "Disney Legend" in 2011, awarding her together with the other princesses like Ariel, belle, Tiana of the princess and the frog. She recently said in an interview that aside from the heavy award she received and plaque displayed with her handprint and signature. Also one of the perks is that she can go to Disneyland anywhere (even the Disney outside the US) whenever she wants for free and she doesn't need to fall in line..how awesome is that.

Lea is a goddess. If you know "On my own" then she is known as one of the best who sang that song. The epitome of Eponine. She didn't audition for that role, it was a straight casting then go on as Fantine in the 25th anniversary. Her recent broadway show was "Once on this island", she played Erzulie, the goddess of love. They performed in the Tony's and the show won as the Best revival.

Ms. Salonga's diction is tailor-made for theater - I've always heard that you must get to that fine line where you are almost over-enunciating, so that the audience can always follow you... Her pop stuff is not this way...

what made Lea into what she is today was her theatre experience when she was very young.... made her into a different teenager unlike so many local artists and singers way back then..... then Miss Saigon came and we all know what happened after that. Even the pop songs she sings is sung differently to even the original artist because of her theatre training and experience.

As wonderful as Lea is, Frances Ruffelle is the definitive Eponine, winning the Tony and Olivier awards years before Lea came to the States... and Eponine was beloved because of her plaintiff existence, and because of this song that many women had sung well before Lea came along.
@jp3813
@jp3813 5 ай бұрын
@@normcummings1967 I believe that Ruffelle hasn't won an Olivier award yet. Everyone has their own definitive Les Miz characters. But Frances revealed in a 2010 interview that she was never asked to take part in this "Dream Cast" 10th anniversary concert despite her good relationship w/ Cameron Mackintosh. By the time Samantha Barks came around in the 25th anniversary concert where both Lea & Frances also performed, the debates were mostly focused on Lea vs Sam. Though those arguments have died down after it became evident that this video of Lea's performance is the most popular Les Miz clip of all time outside of talent show uploads.

I'm surprised you're so familiar with this song but not Lea's rendition. 💐 In case no one else mentioned it, Lea got her audition for Miss Saigon by sending in a tape of her singing, you guessed it, this song! It's not much of an exaggeration to say this song made her career. There's a video of 18 year old Lea (she totally looked 14) auditioning and doing her first casting (or whatever it's called) and she even asks the composer (or lyricist, not sure what he did) for his signature on a Les Mis poster.

No worries Maggie. Every musician that I have watched react to this has had exactly the same reaction. Basically, your comments about how professionally, correctly, and purely this was sung is what is usually noticed by musical experts. I know you began with a bit of research, but yea, Lea Salonga is considered by many to be the gold standard that aspiring broadway performers hope to emulate. She's extraordinary. There's a fun cell phone video on KZbin of her grabbing a guy from the audience and singing "A Whole New World" with, not realizing he had auditioned for the part years earlier and almost got it, so he more than holds his own with this world-class singer. I would like to mention, that the reason for Lea’s classic approach to her diction is also because she’s classically trained. There was a time when she was still in Miss Saigon where her voice was starting to get tired, so in order to save her voice she was trained classical technique. She had great diction prior anyway, but the classical technique she was taught I think also solidified her foundation when singing

Really loved your review of this and was my first time hearing her sing. And she has such a beautiful voice, made me laugh though when you said you did this when you where younger. And i'm like you are still young. Would it be wrong for me to say that I reckon you would be fantastic doing Les Miserables. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas day and that next year you get everything you want at Juilliard.

Im surprised that you are an opera singer but havent heard about Leah Salonga? Not to mention about the voices behind Disney princesses.

💐💐💐 It is too bad that these are not real as you deserve them. You have brought to light so many points that I would have missed listening to Lea. She is no doubt a perfectionist in her art. I can see you doing something like this in the future. BRAVO!!!! 😎

Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching my video until the end. I appreciate it. 😁💖💐Did you know I sang and dedicated a song to you tonight during the live? John Denver's song that you like. Didn't see you in the chats, but some else wanted it but didn't have enough money to sponsor it so I said I am doing it for you and him so he didn't feel bad. I only saw you in the chats towards the end. Anyway, missed you, hope you were doing ok tonight?
