"Dark Side of the Moon" is best listened to in it's entirety, from beginning to end, with great headphones on, in a dimly light room. Those of us who bought the album in 1973 did that many, many times over. Laid on my bed, blacklight and lava lamp going, lighting my "Castle on the Hill" and Floyd posters, from the record, until I was asleep. When I bought the compact disc years later it became truly an awesome experience without interruption.

@@billhabenicht4321, I disagree. I like Comfortably Numb, but I find it repetitive and considerably longer than it needs to be. The first time she heard this she freaked a bit because she had a "thing" about loud bells. But she did fall in love with PF almost as much as I do. With the passing of every year, this song has more meaning as you get older. And what can you say about the guitar solo of David Gilmour? He never failed to amaze. For sure, m8. In fact, I think because there’s so much about aging and death in post-DSOtM Floyd, and I developed a degenerative neuromuscular disorder in my mid-20s, and thus feel about twice my age (I’m in my 40s), I have come to prefer listening to pre-*Dark Side* Floyd, when listening for pleasure, although *Shine On* will always have a special place in my heart, as ‘Syd’ Barrett and I had a special relationship, and his death hit me very hard, though we knew he was not in good health. Anyroad, enough about me. If you ever happen to listen to *Shine On You Crazy Diamond *, please listen to the entire song-Parts 1-9-and before you do, please take some time to learn a little about the man for whom it were written, Roger Keith ‘Syd’ Barrett: a man who spent his whole life trying to find a place in which he ‘fit’, in which he felt he was needed and loved for himself, and where he felt the same for those around him. He searched all his life for something to fill him, spiritually, and vanquish the hollow inside, but I fear he never did. He is the saddest man I have ever known…Yet so bright with talent that-even in his late 40s/early 50s,-a twinkle in his eye could blind the whole of a room. For the opening session, the rhythmic tic toc tic toc etc. is a bass guitar. Roger mutes the strings with his palm and plucks the strings. This sound represents the constant surge of time, never changing never ceasing. The bass drum that starts at a slow and steady boomp boomp, speeds up as the section passes. Represents a heart beat that speeds up as time progresses. The whole passage is an instrumental representation of the lyrics that follow.

The thing about Pink Floyd is that they dont feel the need to fill every music space. Restrain and silence are part of the song and they use them very well to build a mood or a feeling. They dont feel like they need to put as much notes as they can in the tempo but they will send you off tempo once in a while to keep your attention and the arrangement make it that you dont notice it as much as you should. They were not the best musicians, but they could build that mood/feelings like no one and their lyrics are most of the time spot on and sometimes hits you like a ton of brick. You're still young and I guarantee that if you listen to it again in 20 years, it will hit you very different but still very true to what you feel. Hence why they remains timeless, even 51 years after this song was recorded

Also a Mike here. Always loved your reactions, and Pink Floyd are my fave band (joint top with Queen, followed both since the 1970s) I think it's more effective if you do the lyrics after. The way we all first found them, was either by just hearing the album (vinyl) then looking at the lyrics after, or reading the lyrics (from the album cover) as the song was playing. They have more impact that way, when you don't know what's coming. Especially this song.

The road for a long section is covered by all manner of spray painted art (or graffiti as the elders called it), the Batman logo, hearts and dedications and varying other tags among them. Someone added the full lyrics of Pink Floyd's 'Time' to that collection at one point. Pink Floyd in their younger days and with Syd Barret were quite psychedelic. They carried that feel, if not full on style, with them into the 70s. This is why they are so "trip" friendly and you really don't need drugs to take that trip.

great music and reaction maggie this is so different than most other tracks at the time why it stood out-pardon the pun-against time and the years...still classic

Maggie, Dark Side was a concept album. Although I have never done it, it is set up as a sound track to the 1939 classic film "The Wizard of Oz" with the songs corresponding to scenes on the screen. Seeing it done one day is on my bucket list.

This song is best heard immediately followed by the Great Gig in the Sky...they really go together and something is lost listening to them separately.

Yea, it's supposed to transport you to somewhere else. We used to call it Acid Rock. The songs all run into each other to form a theme, like one long story. The end of the last song has heartbeats that match the heartbeats at the beginning of the first song so it can be played on a loop. You put the album on repeat, kick back, drop a hit of purple microdot and let the music take you to the dark side on the moon..
