As others have said, this is a great kind of prank. It's not based on humiliating anyone, but only on making them question their assumptions about reality. The only suggestions I'd have might be moving the door closer to the hiding-place to give less apparent time for trickery, and perhaps using the old "mirrored" box trick to create a hiding place, perhaps under a folding table that anyone might put-up in a park. You could even have the table appear to be an item unrelated to the door, like maybe a kid's lemonade stand.
