This is a tutorial of how to equalize a kick drum with a parametric EQ, using the most common frequencies for that. Equalization is 80% listening and it changes with the style, desired sound and preferences. Anyway, with these frequencies you can have a better idea to get started.
For deeper information about equalizing drums, vocals, guitars and more, you can take my EQ course or Audio mastering course. Use these links for a special price:

You can use dynamic EQ to better equalize a kick, especially give in parallel some compression to the low end for attack. Then add some saturation to fulfill the transients and in the end a limiter to limit peaks and tighten it up. You can get epic kick this way.

I do the same thing more or less but also put a high shelf and boost a bit on the high end to get a smoother sounding attack, plus I really like my kick to cut a lot and be really clicky. I've never had a problem with low end in the kick, always the opposite.

Is there a gate on the kick? Or is this kick the true source without a gate?
@MarcoGalvan

So do you need to cut the freq you boosted around 100? To cut out the boom?
@MarcoGalvan
@MarcoGalvan 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, once you've found the annoying frequency, you can cut it about 3 dB. If that's not enough, try cutting 3 dB more and so on. Take small 3 dB steps and listen carefully.

what if i'm using only one equalizer and analog mixer?
@MarcoGalvan
@MarcoGalvan 5 жыл бұрын
If your mixer doesn't have at least a semi-parametric EQ (variable freq.), it's very hard to get good results. You can try boosting high and low shelving, but it may sound "muddy".

I like all of these tutorials on sound, but I really get tired of the click click click instead of hearing a real kick drum. Maybe you’re listening to a real sound kick drum in your studio but I’m not. It’s not just you I’m referring to, it’s all of the ones that keep going click click click with no really apparent change. But don’t take this wrong-l do like the eqing screens shown if I have my glasses and magnifying glass. What I hate more than anything is when all these professionals say “ I’ll do this or I’ll set this right about here and so-on without saying the frequency or the value to at least give us an idea as to what you’re doing. So many do that. Maybe it’s just me. Thanks for the information you show us. Take care!

Thanks for your comment. You are right, the key for proper EQ (and everything in audio and music, actually) is ear training. Otherwise one cannot really understand what's going on. Most people get this just by doing the work, but in my online EQ course, I share some exercises to help you get started. You can check it out here: bit.ly/38cW4FX

I mean that it may sound like coming out of a "box" or something. You can achieve that by boosting around 300 - 500 Hz
