For everyone asking whether the "maze marshal" was a real person, what happened was that Jonathan Sayer the actor sat next to him in a reserved seat. Before the routine commences, he speaks with the man next to him, and asks him to say he is a maze marshal when asked by Henry Lewis who knows where to look, as he sees Jonathan in the audience. This happens every time this routine is done. The man is not a plant or actor. He is a real audience member, who is simply asked to say a weird profession. Every night the profession changes, all chosen by Jonathan, and done to bring out a reaction from Henry on stage. Hope this helps?

@danielsolomon3794Күн бұрын
@@notme222 It's because they (Penn and teller) don't consider them a stooge. It's an "instant stooge". Meaning someone who came to the show like everyone else and sat down and only during the process of the show did they unknowingly become a stooge. They have spoken about the usefulness of the practice in interviews before. The type of stooge Penn and Teller profess to hate is when have a friend or actor who is in on it into the audience and have them participate in the magical element so that the only explanation is a stooge. Precisely the practice that Jonathan's character is making fun of. It's also notable that this "instant stooge" was utilized merrily for the comedy and not magic. The only part of the trick that is actually attempting to fool the audience is the maroon color on chalk board. Notice that it's the only part of this act that the comment section can't really explain.

For everyone who doesn't get how this brand of comedy works, the only members of the show are Henry and Jonathan. It DOES, however, require the assistance of a couple willing members of the audience, who are approached beforehand and asked to say a particular word or phrase when called on. The maze marshal was sat next to Jonathan, who will have told him to say he is a maze marshal and that if asked his name he should say John. The girl Anya was told if asked to pick a color to say maroon. The thing here is to remember that it isn't magic, so it's not like a "plant" in the audience. It's comedy, so it's more like coordinated heckling.
@sadas31902 жыл бұрын

Absolutely NOT correct. Don't go around explaining things if you have no clue how they're done.
@davidhaymon6728 Жыл бұрын
You're right about "John the maze marshal," but not about Anya. The board saying the color IS the one actual magic trick in this skit. Jonathan does tell a real audience member what occupation to say (though Henry doesn't know what occupation Jonathan will pick each show), as well as to say his name is John when asked later on. However, the person saying the color hasn't been told anything, can say any color of their choosing, and the board will still say that. So the whole "Magic Goes Wrong" sketch actually leads up to one real magic trick.
@alydev23 Жыл бұрын
I think the maroon trick was Jonathan touching the maroon tie of his maroon suit just before Henry finishes the question, after two false starts the audience member would be starting to feel like they want to get their speaking bit out of the way and will grasp for the next colour to think of, and Jonathan's forcing maroon off to the side. Great trick though.

@BigHossPlayz3 жыл бұрын
@@stupidactivities1424 OK, First of all, It's not called a force for no reason, you thinks it's a coincidence that magicians always pick your card? It's a calculated decision. If you will look, the "O's" are double circled. So he probably just wrote over maroon on the board so the mics could pick up the chalk writing. Penn and Teller are masters of forces to the point where on "Fool Us" they can come up with multiple options how a magician could have forced a single component of 1 trick, JUST BY WATCHING IT ONCE, so it's not crazy to rule out there is a force for the color of maroon. A moment later the manager walks out, assure us this is not a drill or hoax and we all need to vacate now! So out we trooped on a cold January Saturday night into Londons West end....as did every other theatre in the vicinity. Just to add - I am rather inclined to think there was some suggestion going on, as well as props. I'm not sure if I was sitting there I'd have necessarily come up with maroon (it would be reliant on the audience member knowing the distinction between it and brown) - but the entire routine is *extremely* heavy on the use of the letter M, with the "mind, mind, mind" echo, "maze martial", "mate" etc. - and there aren't really any other common colour names beginning with M. (I think, on a subconscious level, all the Ms make the whole thing slightly funnier too.)

@@william-uk The chalkboard Henry used was a specially made board, used by magicians for years, and most certainly Penn and Teller would know the Lynx Magic Board - please remember, Penn and Teller are involved with this, they were not simply introducing this act.

All these people complaining about plants in the audience, I just want to ask: you do realise this is a comedy don't you? The point is to make jokes, you don't berate stand up comedians for writing their jokes in advance so why berate mischief theatre for doing the same?

It’s because the guy on stage is wearing maroon, which is an unusual colour for a suit, so then you got to thinking about the colour maroon. It’s one of those fun mind tricks. If he was wearing a bright yellow or green suit you would have said yellow or green
@subscriptions1586 Жыл бұрын
Lol. Basic trick. People with simple mind would be easily influenced. I'd never have said maroon in a million years.

@@elenalizabeth There's another version where the color is mauve, but "Brian" has a tan suit, so it's not because of that
