This is the most beautiful commercial by a grocery store brand I have ever seen. My Japanese best friend, an exchange student in Ohio in the '90s, told me how she enjoyed her time with the family going to Kroger's for grocery shopping and cooking food together as she was the daughter of a restaurant owner in Japan. This hits home. We had seven exchange students between when I was 5 and 19. Two of them stayed for an extra year and one of them even went to a college two hours away. I learned so much about them and their cultures and we always tried to make food from their home. I still keep in touch with a few of them and one now goes to MIT so I'll be visiting Boston in February to see them for the first time in 14 years

I'm crying so hard I can hardly type this. I am not exaggerating when I say that I've had hundreds of exchange students in my home and at my table through Youth For Understanding International Exchange, including a new seventeen-year-old daughter every year. When I became Field Manager for Central Illinois, I was in charge of 50 students and their Area Representatives, every year. These "kids" are all grown with children of their own, by they are still my family. This commercial was written for me. Now, if only they'd all show up on my doorstep.... This reminded me of a funny story. When I was giving a parents' orientation shortly after a new batch of students came, a host family told me the story of trying to make their Japanese girl less homesick by making rice one night for dinner. They watched anxiously as she took a bite and said, "Well? Do you like it?" She said, "Oh! Very much. What is it?" They had made Minute Rice, which in no way resembles real Japanese rice. I could write a book with these stories.

I’m hosting my 10th exchange student now. This made me cry. It would be a dream come true, to be able to visit with them all at once. I was excited when my Brazilian daughter got to go to Paris, and met my French son. He gave her a tour. These kids are forever your family ❤.

A friend saw this and sent it my way, saying it reminded them of our family. I’m bawling. It is us almost spot on! We are biracial family (redheaded mom even!) with 8 international students over a 13 year period. Some stayed more than 1 year. That emptiness when the first student heads back home…that is so real so we kept growing our big international family. ❤ We’ve visited them and some returned to visit us. Only thing missing is all of them at once which is a dream of ours. Hosting kids from around the world is life changing! Serbia, Germany, China (2kids), South Korea, Sweden, Indonesia, and our last one Peru! This ad is everything. We’ve sent it to all our kids!

This ad gets my undivided attention every time. It reminds me of the time my Grandmother would come all the way from Harlem to spend Christmas with us when I was 5 years old, seventy years ago. I always loved looking forward to hearing her stories of how she kept my mom and her older brothers and sisters in line. It paid off well, because they took good care of each other and all of us "youngsters". But, since she passed away, as well as all her children, it has been a lonely desert, and time consuming task trying to keep all the grandchildren together for Christmas. I long to have that feeling again, and this ad has me reminiscing and a few tears of joy, grateful for having them all for a time.
