when men were still men, I love the old working people mentality, straight to the point, honest and rough! And thos kind of work yeah you might not get old but you those people get a strong personality and at the end of the day they knew they had done something not like modern office jobs...

Can't say for sure but I have a suspicion that there is a fair amount of flannel going on here. The metallurgist peering through the sight glass in one of the cupolas tuyeres would not be able to tell very much at all other than the furnace is melting! Added to that I have never heard of anyone holding a cupola until the analysis had been completed. I suspect the chemist shown was probably carrying out analysis for silicon and the gravimetric method would take quite along time to complete and I can't see how a cupola could be operated in this way as it would require turning the blast off otherwise the well would fill and block the tuyeres and turning the blast of would then create 'cold' iron.................only my thoughts !
