As a musician and a programmer/gamer, magic is absolutely expensive. It used to be more expensive to buy into modern a decade ago, but with rotating print-to-format sets and legacy becoming the new vintage it's hard to justify paying 4 digits for one deck, even if you hot swap your lands/staples/etc from deck to deck. It's a $1000-2000 card game if you want to truly be competitive, and that can easily be ONE deck in modern/commander, and 2-3x that in Legacy. If you want to play more than one archetype, might as well 1.5-2x that number. It might not be cars level expensive, but it isn't a $100 card game if you want to be a part of the pool. Liquidating your collection/cards isn't as easy either unless you're willing to lose a chunk of money.

I started playing magic last year and I couldn’t believe how much it was to buy decks in standard, modern, and was mind boggled by the cost of legacy or vintage. But then I decided to try limited and fell in love. For 10-20 dollars a week I could play in person and started building my collection. My local game store give out store credit for constructed play so now I have a pauper deck I play and am saving my credit to build a pioneer deck then hopefully a modern. I think that this game is way too expensive, but completely agree that it’s as expensive as you want it to be

its pretty expensive if you want to play a high power format like spending 1k on a modern deck is a lot a lot a lot, the real saving grace is that you just sell stuff you dont want anymore and recoup most/all/profit on your cards.

The biggest issues are mana bases and staples. Things like precons, if they keep the pace of the last two Pioneer Challenger years are actually great, because you don't really need to add much to them to be perfectly at FNM level. 50 bucks for the precon, maybe another 25 to 50 in addons and you're there. I'm planning on gettin Lotus Field Combo for pioneer and I'm honestly appaled that like 50% of the cost is on Boseiju. I already commented it, but a playpiece never should go above 10 to 15€ per card.

Hello and thank you for your video, I understand your view of things. Now we also have to see that 1) contrary to what you say: a deck must be kept up to date! some cards come from the decklist, others come in...that comes at a cost! ... 2) yes, the pauper is a format that costs little money compared to the fun it provides, but there are only a few tournaments that pay anything. Moreover, depending on the region (like here for example), nobody plays pauper (except me and some of my friends). 3) if we compare to a "traditional" magic board game at a higher cost (except extensions of certain games) 4) as standard, at competitive level, it's a real upgrade cost! 5) it is also an entry point to the collection and the desire to always have more ... we start with a pauper deck, we end with 17 decks in all formats :D Afterwards, magic is a great game, and we always take great pleasure in it, even for players who started (like me, ... yes, I'm getting old) almost 30 years ago!

You got a point, but you have to spend your money cleverly. For example i bought the izzet phoenix precon at 60 euros (almost 70 USD) and I need to spend more for make it competitive. I could play a cheap list with cheap lands (the only thing i need is expensive lands) but i only meet people with stronger and competitive decks.

True. Although you have to keep in mind that Pioneer is a competitive format and you could play against other players with preconstructed decks at a similar level

I shifted to pauper as my main format to spend less than i used to. Now i have 47 pauper decks and counting. I could have made an expensive modern deck by now if i focused on modern. But then i would only have 1 deck compared to 47.

@@MTGDeckmasters most of them are from old collections of crap cards. I started making pauper decks in paper when it was still not famous way back 2015. Got most of the cards cheap. And honestly out of the 47 decks i currently have, i probably only about 10 decks that are competitive enough to play. The rest are just fun decks or old pauper decks that got run over by power creep. Can't wait for the next content! Cheers!

Yeah when you compare it to collecting cars its of course cheaper but in the end there is no one in the whole magic universe that plays for a few years and only buys one pauper deck for 50 bucks. In the years you just spend more and more money and it will be really expensive.

I cant tell if this guy is trolling or not. But im comenting just to help yhe channel. Magic the gathering is expensive, ive played for 2 years and know this. I played yugioh for 20 years and eventually quit it. I had an average deck cost of £150~£300 cost. I had a new deck almost every 6 months and I quit the game because it got more rodiculous every year. These days its a win by turn 2 on average for most games. I didn't want to keep up with the average age group of 8 years old to 30 and so I went onto Magic. Magic the gathering has a much more mature group and the average player is mid 20s to mid 40s. It's also mostly a male enviroment whether as when I was playing yugioh most the group at my locals were girls and they cheat so fucking much. Anyway magic is costly because you need £400 on average for a decent power level 8 commander deck. Pioneer can cost £200 and standard can cost £800. Your better of using websites such as Europe/UK - Cardmarket. Magic the gathering is expensive because I have 3x other hobbies and that's - fishing.. archery and rugby. Magic the gathering costs more than those 3x combined over the year. Magic cards tend to lose price and hike up every month and you never know what jeweled lotus will hold is it 70 this month or 140. Sell for 140 but when is it 70 again 🤔

Bro Magic is so expensive if you want to play a modern or standard OK standard is actually not that expensive but pioneer and modern or Hella expensive so is commander, most of where your money goes is Lands and then some of your staple cards if you’re playing commander, money is going towards tutors and again land base magic is not cheap only time it because cheap is when you play popular or playing Mono red or mono greens Stompy

And on top of that if you’re not playing, at least somewhat competitively, you’re not gonna have any fun when you’re being steamrolled by other decks, unless you enjoy losing all the time I got back into Magic, I built a infect that I had an infinite poison. Combo I had other decks but people love playing the most bs in the game so magic is just a money pool, I left magic again because the game is dying and I’m not gonna be forced to constantly upgrade my deck to keep up with other people so there’s that consider as well if you’re going to play magic
