This is a truly remarkable interview. Imagine if it was 1984, and Magic was trying to say, "Larry, can you take us through your thought process as we play against each other in the Finals?" Bird would have just looked at Magic in stony silence. ("I didn't want to be friends with him. I was trying to beat him!") So this is an important document in their evolution not just as players, but as people. Both Larry and Magic seem to have learned that there is life beyond the basketball court.

What blows my mind is this. Larry Bird is the best pure team basketball player I've ever seen, but clearly didn't have the athleticism of many of his peers. If Len Bias doesn't die and joins the team that only lost 1 home game in 50+ games in 1986, the Celtics would probably have won 3 to 5 more titles. That said, Larry always gives so much respect to his peers and the present game. Here he is in 2009 saying Lebron is closing in on being the greatest SF ever. I mean in his prime Bird was a savage yet he has no hesitation saying how Kobe Bryant is his favorite current player? On the other hand I look LeBron and it's me me me, whining when he doesn't win the MVP, stacking the best big man in the NBA (A.Davis) on his squad and acting like he's immediately the GOAT lol. I don't know I guess I just love how Magic and Bird saved the NBA yet are humble enough to know their time has passed. Same with Kareem. I don't know if older age does that to a person of people are just raised differently today. I'm only 45 so I'm not giving judgment or when I was your age speeches. James Harden will shoot 25% from 3pters with 6 turnovers and compete for the MVP and than not show up to training camp. And people say he's the GOAT or ''epic''?It's just a different era I guess.
