Magic Johnson did this job as a favor to the Lakers' organization and his friendship with the Buss' family - that's all. The truth is he didn't need this foolishness; they used him as the 'clean-up' man and he took all the hits but they gave Magic Johnson no power to control everything that he would be responsible concerning.
