Mansell actually was at a disadvantage as he was physically bigger and heavier than most other drivers. He raced before driver weight was included in the minimum weight regulation so lighter drivers had an advantage. On the flip side he also raced cars which had no brake assistance. His greater weight and strength allowed him to brake harder than his teammate, his car was actually fitted with a stronger brake pedal.
@NoTime4name7 жыл бұрын
careverga420 Everyone would've had huge balls back then so that part would be pretty even I guess ;)
@X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X8X7 жыл бұрын
His weight was actually a problem at some times in his career. A driver's weight did not count towards the minimum weight limit back then. Judging by how much a few kilograms influence laptime, he was even faster!

@ssssssss68893 жыл бұрын
Patrese departing from pole and leading pack for the first part of the race and being not as fast as in quali somehow also contributed into Mansell being being two sec faster than anybody else. He would still be faster but maybe by 1 or 1,2 or 0,8 sec / lap if Senna had clean track ahead of him. The leading pack was only be able to go through Patrese when his tires were worn out and he was sliding all over the place. I loved Mansell back then and he would still win the race anyhow , but just let's put everything in the right place.

Nigel Mansell, my favorite F1 driver, ever - a pure racer. He had many fantastic moments, but I think this win was his biggest achievement and his best day. What is not in the video, but may worth to mention: this was the old layout of Hungaroring (Hungarian Grand Prix), which was extremely slow and almost impossible to overtake (there were a few fatal incidents in a row in the early 80s, so the Hungarians were asked to build a very safe ring). Ferrari at the time was very very poor. Winning the race there, from 12th place in a poor Ferrari showing Nigel Mansell's driving genius.

Mansell is the most underated driver ever in F1. Always put up a challenge to Senna. Hard and fair. When both him and Alain were at Ferrari he was classed as a number 2 with inferior engineers , parts and overall realiblity yet 90% of the time I recall him getting more out of his equipment than the Frenchman and was constantly hounded by the gremlin gods. If it werent for unrealibilty of that Ferrari ,Mansell would of been more renowned in the history books.

And that's why Mansell is the best British F1 Driver. Let me put this in a way you understand, if you put Hamilton in a Red Bull, which is the third fastest car of the grid and start P12 he won't be able to catch a Mercedes that is leading the race and much less overtake him and lap 2 seconds faster than anyone else. But Mansell did. He drove the third fastest car of the grid, from P12, lapped 2 seconds faster than any car of the grid, and won the race. Hamilton is just overrated, he is not that good.

Johansson's Onyx was slowing with terminal gearbox issues when Senna caught him exiting Turn 3. To his credit, Nigel never hesitated - but it really came down to Senna having to back off for a fraction of a second due to a much slower car suddenly being in his path.

I don't know which method they use to digitalize the old records but i'm pretty sure there is a "vault" of some kind that they store all the old tapes of the races. they're not going to give those races for free, no way. if they were to introduce a pay to play system like itunes maybe, that could work. but i think it's still a niche market, not sure if demand would rationalize the new system.
