All notes can go with all chords, all chords can go with any other chord, but a coherent structure underpinning it is what takes it from directionless babbling to compelling music with intentionality - and the structures that most people in the anglosphere are most familiar with are the ones you pick up in jazz and classical theory like this video so perfectly demonstrates!

Amazing. Can you do a longer form where you explain the harmonic logic in greater detail for us beginners?
@zachhansen514
@zachhansen514 10 ай бұрын
I promise that if you work on the fundamentals of music harmony then this will be a lot more enjoyable when you can understand it instinctually. Having these complex things explained from beginning to end in one setting can be overwhelming and not even enjoyable.

Learn the numbering system for diatonic progressions in all keys and your harmonic knowledge as someone else pointed out. You should be able to identify chord sequences in any key by it's numerical position in the key; ii m7 - V7 - I - IV maj7 IVmaj7 - iii m7 - ii m7 - I which translates to; Dm7 - G7 - C - F maj7 Fmaj7 - Em7 - Dm7 - C it'll help u learn how progressions relate to each in different keys. For example, if i ask you to play I - II V7 - bVI maj7 - V7 sus, you should know in the key of C that means; C - D7 - Ab maj7 - G7sus The D7 and Ab are non-diatonic to the key of C but the number system works either way. Start with easy common progressions you can find in songs, if you're at that level that is.

You take the second degree of the scale (In c major it is D) and make it a dominant chord (D7) You then voice it over the third degree of the scale (E). So in the end it is D7/E

@@brownriceprodPut down the bong lol Anyway no it doesn’t really work in minor. Flipping up or down a minor third in minor is much more jarring in a minor key for some reason. Play around with it and see if you agree, tho

@@brownriceprod so if you have a progression that starts on a minor 1… it resolves back to it the same way? Can’t seem to make it sound right.
