I usually do magic in my little rock and fossil shop. If folks ask me to repeat, I tell them the magic union is always watching on the security cameras but I’ll be happy to do another trick. Then I usually wink or thumbs up the camera.

Great advice. I love your channel. When someone asks me to "Show it again", I reply by saying "Now showing a magic trick again is like telling a joke again. You already know the punch line. There are no surprises. But, let me show you something else". This is the way I avoid the word "No" and move on to something else that's hopefully even more amazing and entertaining. Thanks - You are awesome!

I've been a part of an improv comedy group for 20+ years. Yes and is how we do everything. I often get that can you do it again question. I'll say I wish I could but I don't know how it works, which always gets a laugh. I then say I can do another trick for you, though. Sometimes I do use the line, the first time is entertainment, the second time is educational.

As usual, all great insights! For flashy visual stuff that you can't repeat, it's sometimes a good idea to tell your audience, "Watch closely, I'm only going to do this once"! There are a whole class of magic tricks that are stronger after being repeated that are just perfect for the "Do it again" guy. The jumping toothpick is perfect trick to show this guy: Perform the trick, let the guy try and fail, repeat a couple of times, give him a bogus explanation, tell him to go off to the corner and work on it. Perform for everyone else uninterrupted!

I used to respond by saying, "I'm sorry, but when it comes to performing tricks, once is entertainment, twice is education." Edit: I didn't watch the video before commenting and then I saw the same quote in the video LOL

Wayne Dobson would say to them exactly what you quoted, “The first time is entertaining, the second time is educational.” I use that and if they really want to learn it, I’d then offer them lessons at a price at a different time by giving them a business card.

It’s true what they say (in most cases): “The first time is entertainment, the second is education”. I made that mistake MANY times when I first started out! 😂 (You also have to watch out for: “I missed that” or “I wasn’t looking”!). I really liked the tip from Improv theater!

As a total amateur I have little experience. So far I never had a problem to say no with the remark "Once is a performance, twice is a lecture." Or something like that. Recently I showed and taught a card trick to an acquaintance of mine and later she told me, that she performed it for her 2 children (4 and 5 y old), who now are convinced she actually has magical power. She also showed it to her husband and soon after her parents on a vacation. They all were completely blown away and wanted to see it over and over again and she complied. They never figured it out. After a while she told her husband how it works though because he was totally frustrated and pestered her until she gave in and explained it.

Also if they say that they were fooled! That is great news! Audience management is a key ALWAYS!!!! My experience females are better to show magic. Trust me! They generally love magic and don't try to mess you up and don't ask that question. Just my experience 🎉 Thanks David important video ❤

Another option: Tricks created to be done twice. For instance... Chicago Opener... Or that trick where spectator's card appears face up in a face down deck, but the second time you do it, it's not their card, but a card telling you how many cards away it is.

I was going to say to do the same or similar effect with a different method, but you already said it. 😎 Instead, I'll mention something Tom Mullica said in a lecture. It's about his torn bill trick (where he borrows a dollar {or a 20}, and tears it up... that's it! He said they never ask you to do it again! 😂 Btw, in the lecture, he did eventually restore it (after several other tricks) from his Mullica wallet.

Hi David, I have another magic question: how many magic tricks are there approximately❓️ How many magic books are there approximately ❓️ And is there anywhere where we can see an overview (very broadly) of the vast amount of stuff that's out there❓️for the shear amount of effects, props, books, video's.... is quite mind boggeling. Any website you would recommend, like perhaps magicpedia or other ❓️ 🤔 Thank you so much! Best wishes 🎩♥️

I rarely perform, but I've heard this situation should be handled as you described: lead the spectator to having you doing another trick for them instead, using whatever wording for that you prefer (and you gave examples). Good point about having more than one trick on you. I've been trying to find a few for my regular (i.e., non-magic) wallet just in case, and I have some that will likely be OK for me right now, but if you have any tips for this, that could be a nice follow-up video to this one. FWIW, I also have a case with a deck of cards and some packet tricks, but I can't guarantee I'll always have that available, hence wanting a few small things for my wallet. Thanks for the video and tips!

Sometimes its possible to do the same trick again but use a different method. The effect will look the same but the second method will cancel out the first method you used making it even more impossible.

I have a buddy that comes over and he loves the linking rings so I do it once or twice a year for him. I think because I let him examine the rings it really throws him off. I repeat it but, different methods. But, he always brings it up. When the cards come out he goes that was good but, the one that really gets me is the one with the rings can you do that one. I usually try not to repeat the same trick. But, you can break down a 3 phase across. With 3 different people. So you are kinda doing it again but, different phases and different methods. I don't know if that helps.

It’s a bit like asking a Dj to play your favourite tune over and over again…you just don’t do that, variety is entertainment…personally I use the expression ‘Mental Exhaustion’ a lot, people are used to (familiar) with me saying it…I mean surely it isn’t unreasonable for a magician to explain that they might need to top up their magic energy levels for their next performance lol..! 😇

I literally just quote the rules of magic. (The spectators then feel like they were let in in one of our secrets.) Followed by "I ll show something similar but slightly off.. The trick will be similar due to the fact magic will be performed ,it'll be slightly off due to the fact I'm the guy performing it." Smilesotheylikeyou
