Wow!? "Wouldn't fool a magician today"... I am a magician I just learned about The Throw Change, fooled me hard. It's explained in an $8 book: Arthur Buckley's Card Control.

I fell in love with magic 48 years ago and went on to perform professionally for many years. No longer a performer I work behind the scenes as a creative consultant, producer, and creator of magic for other magicians. One of the most important things anyone serious about learning magic should do is start collecting magic books. Old books, new books, books on all topics of magic should be collected. You may be interested in card magic, but that doesn't mean you should not be studying other forms of magic as well. Magic is a complex and varied performing art, and methods from one branch of magic may be useful in another branch. Too many amateurs today want instant results so they look for self working tricks and props that do all the work. That is how you become a trickster, not a magician. A magician STUDIES the art in all its forms and is willing to put in the countless long hours it takes to master the secret methods and difficult sleights. He also studies and practices his performance and presentation skills. A professional magician who has spent his time studying and learning, and mastering the various art forms, including honing his presentation skills can take a simple $5 trick and make it look like a miracle to his audience. I absolutely 100% agree with this review. The books reviewed in this video have been in my personal library for many years. They sit among over 650 other magic books. Sure I own magic DVDs also, but in my opinion, and the opinion of most of magic's biggest and brightest stars, books are still the number one way to learn magic. When I am working with a performer developing new routines for a show, whether in Vegas, Monte Carlo, Branson, or for a touring show, I often refer back to old magic books where some real gems are buried and are mostly unknown to today's performers. Read not only books filled with tricks. Read books written about other magicians, especially those in Houdini's day and earlier. The old masters were truly masters of the art and you can learn so much from studying their styles, methods, and performances. Magic is the most ancient of all the performing arts. Treat it with the love and respect it deserves and it will be an important part of your life until you breathe your last breath. With time and patience you could become one of those great masters young magicians will look back upon with highest regards in the future.

The best, and only important plus to using a book over a video is that when you read the book, you are forced to understand the move you're about to do. In a video, oyu can very easily just copy the move without understanding it. It's a huge difference if you read a book, and it says: "Hold the deck in the left hand so that the first joints of the second and third fingers will be against the middle one side..." It contains more detail than if you were to just see a video of the move.

I'll forever prefer books. I learned how to do all the basics. fans, one handed cuts, DL, ect ect from books ( mostly mark wilsons book actually) i guess its a generational thing. But i really absorb and learn if I'm reading it off the page

What is old is new. I do Old West living history with a gambling routine, and I do "A Poker Puzzle" from The Royal Road of Card Magic. Even an effect that is 80 + years old gets great reactions.

Thank you so much for this review. I’m going to get the royal road to card magic book and the dvd version made by r Paul Wilson for my birthday next month. I got the expert card technique book but I find it hard to understand, so I going to try the royal road first with the dvd so I can have a better understanding of the moves and sleights. Thanks again for helping young magicians like me trying to get started on this stuff😀😀😀👍🏾

Great video! The best place to hide secrets, is between the pages of a book. Also a lot of dvds are built on these ideas that are in these books. Paul Wilson said something like: if you study(read books and practise) you will be better in anything. Like a surgent. I dont want the surgent who watched the videos. I want the surgent who studied.

I have to say i agree with you so much, I am a young magician and have been for the last year and it is only now that i am realizing how good books are and i have ordered my first 2 ''The royal road to card magic'' and ''The Expert at the Card Table'' and i notice now that to go from beginner to intermediate youtube videos wont do the job , because even though i have been doing magic the last year i would still say i could learn a lot from beginner magic books. Thank you for these reviews :)

Books are by faaaar the best..... Its just nice to be able to hold something about your love in your hand and i think it's the easiest way to learn the tricks you are studying. I've noticed some youtube mavicians will do things a little incorrect compared to the original magicians boom teachings. Im really glad you did this review : ) id like to hear your opinion on the top 5 or 10 magic books of all time.

The illustrations in books do not need to be paused, rewound, or played in slow motion. I almost went crazy studying Kostya Kimlat's Roadrunner Cull DVD. I wanted to shout, SLOW DOWN!

"The Seven Basic Secrets of Illusion Design" by Eric Van Duzer and Paul Osborne has an illusion book series out. Stage magic is a very broad term. It encompasses everything from the egg bag to vanishing an elephant, with birds and manipulation somewhere in between.

Ps, i hate the dover edition of the expert at the card table, its so sloppy made and its quite hard to find stuff in it
