Imagine being the kid that submitted Doron for the design contest, and then seeing YOUR creation show up in the Yugioh GX anime years later. That would have been the coolest thing ever to me.

While Doron was a basic monster in the normal game, Doron is given an effect in many of the early Konami games that doubles itself, which can be really useful in certain decks. (Apparently why its Water type, it deals with reflections and all that.)

I never knew that BanDai and Konami were working on the game at the same time. If that had actually happened and both TCG's were operating at the same time that would have killed the game due to confusion probably. If ANY small factors were changed about the YuGiOh IP, we may not have a game today.

I think the difference here is that Bandai saw it more as a collectible thing in the 90s, like baseball cards or pogs while Konami saw an actual competitive game in Yu-Gi-Oh!

I think the name change was necessary, but it is cool to look back on Magic & Wizards historically. It just goes to show how much something is altered and reworked over time. A lesson in how you often don't get things right with a project the first time.

I wosh Toei continued the original run, because I axing of the pre Duelist kingdom stuff makes the anime kinda confising at times (Like Kaiba lost in a private duel in the Gallop anime when it was a giant exhibition tournament at Kaiba Land in the manga, yet it still has the same effect on the characters status in the dueling world for some reason?) Also I like the table face to face Duel Domes more than the Holo maps, personally

Maybe if the card game kept the Magic & Wizards name, other Yugioh properties like Capsule Monsters or Dungeon Dice Monsters would've been easier to differentiate for the public. If Wizards of the coast was so sensitive as to sue Konami for BEWD or the use of the word "Magic" I can understand naming the entire card game after that would've pissed them off even more though.

I really think that the video games could have continued with this divergent pathing and kept doing this until the modern day, forging their own paths in addition to releasing games that are just simulators. The alignment system, the plethora of different effects, the different rules, it was well developed and different enough to stand on its own.

The complete Bandai Yugioh cards are easily my most prized thing I own. That Mirror Force is beautiful. The Bandai pokemon card collection is definitely a close 2nd.

Hold on. CGC does not guarantee authenticity of ANY Magic & Wizards cards like what the video mentions. They may even grade fakes and that's why no one trusts CGC slabs or considers them to be worth about the same as the raw playable card except it's not playable and in a secure "sleeve". Rely on a different company or avoid the entire M & W sets if you want something authentic and vintage, and also realize that the values of these are currently in "hype" and you're safer collecting vintage stuff you knew about already before these M&W cards started popping up.

I love the video man, I always wonder how Konami managed to get their hands on Yu-Gi-Oh! in the first place. Guess they were able to see how big a hit the card game would of been and strike before anyone else can.

This is fascinating! I never knew the OCG nearly tried using the Magic & Wizards name, that's so cool! Also hold up, the Wizards of the Coast lawsuit over Magic was real? I thought that was always just an urban legend because I had never seen proof of it before

Wizards did go candy crush saga on their ass as yugioh had to change magic cards to spell cards. Real petty stuff. It is a shame that after season zero they didn't really do much other than cards except that capsule monsters side story, which was fun.

At the very least it was over Magic Ruler, so Magic cards may have been tangential. I think it was WOTC being petty

I also forgot the failure of dungeon dice monsters where just moving or attacking had a cost, which the anime made it look better than the sluggish gba game. I did like flipping the Shonen jump yugioh promos back in the day to pay for the physical books before they went digital.

I hated Yugioh Forbidden Memories so much as a kid (and still hate it). I was thinking I'm getting a proper Yugioh TCG game and it wasn't even that. But even without my bias, it is so badly designed. You can play one card a turn, you are relied on the fusion mechanic because most of you get is 100% crap. You can buy cards with the code they have in the real tcg, which is cool, but Blue eyes costs one million stars and the best you can get per duel is only five! Thankfully, the sequel, Duelist of the Roses was insanely better (despite being very unbalanced early game) with combat that mixes cards games and Strategy RPGs.

I played Yugioh as a child and just recently built a main Light and Darkness Dragon Deck and secondary Thunder Dragon Deck in 2024. I look forward to new content for these decks in the upcoming decades and hope these cards are still relevant. All the best. 🖤🤍🎊🎉
