I have used this mix for over 40 years. Worst problem is it will freeze if used in wintertime. The most powder put through a barrel without cleaning is one pound. I soak patches not spray. Each time you push a ball down you clean the barrel.

@@keithmoore5306 there is no problem with the mix damaging the powder charge. I have loaded and left this for several days many times with no problems. Years ago I have won state championships using this lube. I have shot deer at over 200 yards using this lube.

My opinion of Dawn Dish Shop is it's the best stuff since beer in bottles. I use it as a Black water tank cleanser in my RV. Works great there, too, as well as a handy, safe cleanser for my shop . I'm thinking this is the most underappreciated product ever!!

That same mixture also makes a hand cleaner that’s unbeatable by anything on the market you put it in a spray bottle just like he did and use it as needed your hands will never be dirty again I learned about it at a diesel motor rebuild shop

I have worked a LOT of filthy jobs. I have found two soap products I now swear by. Dawn dish soap, which is strong enough to strip the oils and tar out of asphalt, and don’t ask me how I know that. The second one is LA’s Totally Awesome, found in Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar General. I would spray that stuff onto our pavers every morning, and just let it soak in. Rain, or a garden hose once a week would take of incredible amounts of the accumulated tar. That Awesome stuff, adding a cup of that stuff to the work laundry would take off just about anything. But the Dawn, it was the nuts for cleaning the shop floor, and your grimy paws. Well, the Awesome did that, too…

Very interesting. I use dawn dishsoap and hot water to clean my flintlock barrel after a full day of shooting. I never would have thought to use it as a patch lube. Thanks for sharing the idea.

I have heard over the years about people using this but never tried it. Thanks for trying it and for the video. Don't think I will be using it, too slimey for me. I use Ballistol and water 1 part Ballistol to 4 or 5 parts water and get the same results, shoot all day without cleaning, and its not slimey. Thanks for all your videos I like the way you do them - no BS and right to the point of the subject.

You can run these patches every third shot and you get close to the same results, and you don't get quite as slimed. A baggie with sponged dampened with the mix makes for a quick press the patch into the sponge and go operation. Just don't get the sponge dripping wet. Just my two cents, feel free to ignore. lol

I've always used Hoppe's No. 9 Plus to lube the patches and it has the added bonus of cleaning the bore as the ball comes up the barrel. This stuff allowed me to shoot a 40 shot match with out swabbing. This included the time between matches, when the rifle just sat in the rack..After the change in the Hoppe's formula it had been just OK. I tended to need a swabbing a couple of times. I have been interested in a new patch lube and will give this a try.. PS. Patch lube seems to be one of the greatest mysteries of muzzle loading. Everyone uses the BEST stuff ever and if you have a problem with fouling the first thing that is asked is " What patch lube are you using?" When you answer..They get a sad expression, roll their eyes and say "Well there's your problem!

Great video, I need to try it. For the past couple of years I've been shooting woods walk matches which are 20 rounds each, loading from the pouch. I've used either Hoppe's No.9 BP Lube (formerly No.9 Plus) or Mr. Flintlock lube. I shoot a .50 caliber rifle with a .490 ball in an 0.018" ticking patch, on top of 55 grains of 3Fg Goex or Scheutzen, and do not need to swab during the match. The last round loads as easily as the first and cleanup is quick.

That's one way to do it. It basically cleans the barrel every time you ram a ball home and, if the patch is not soaked too much, it won't significantly harm the powder. For a hunting load, I'd use a waxed wad or cardboard tab between powder and ball, though. The other way is the greased patch. 50% beeswax, 50% _unsalted_ vegetable margarine. Change proportions slightly based on weather: little more beeswax for hot weather, little more margarine or olive oil for cold weather, no need to loose your sleep on exact perchentages, it doesn't matter that much, just keep the mix consistent each shooting session. What this does is keep fouling very soft. The ball will go down the bore smoothly. If it starts to feel gritty and dry, you are using too little grease on the pacth, or your grease is too solid for the weather. Again, the end result is you can shoot all day long. I used grease pills of the same mixture between 20 grains of FFFg Swiss powder and round ball in my Uberti 1851 Navy, lubed abundantly (arbor and mechanism) with jojoba oil, which is a modern ethical substitute for sperm whale oil used back then (exact same composition), and the maximum number of shots I fired was 16 cylinders (96 shots), and stopped firing only because I ran out of powder. Last cylinder went just as smooth as the first one, just as accurate. I could have gone on firing till the cows came home. Personally, I like the greased patch better as I don't like the idea of regularly putting water down the bore (that patch seems to show reddish traces of rust), but that's me and I didn't perform any scientific or near-scientific test on the subject, so maybe it's just in my head and there's nothing real to it.

Cheap shortening, like Crisco type, along with the beeswax, makes a good patch lube. Very economical too, you can get Tubs of shortening for a few dollars.

Yes you stated the same as I do. It not shooting without swabbing, it is swabbing for every load. Now with that being said I'm jealous! Because my old super secret formula over the years was Thompson center #13, which means I spent way too much money.

Dawn is fantastic stuff. I use it for pretty much every damn thing. In the haz waste industry we would buy it by the drum and use it in pressure washers to decon / degrease everything including concrete floors. Passed lab tests every time.

I watched a fellow shooter use this patch lube method yesterday at our range and after 10 rounds he swabbed the barrel and you could hardly see any fowling. Mate I am now convinced this is a simple and effective patch lube and performs even better than the Hoppes #9 traditional black powder gun bore cleaner I use as a lube!

I use 50% Murphy's oil soap and 50% 409 degreaser. You can clean your barrel with it too. You can shoot all day without fouling. But every 4 or 5 shots, I run a couple patches down the barrel to clean it. My whole group used our concoction then when our competitors found out...they started using it too. It works wonderfully. I used my empty cap container and soaked my patches in that. Used pillow ticking round patches...they fit perfectly.

I routinely shoot a 30+ shot patched ball match with "slimy patches" Often a mix of the cheapest hand lotion I can find and Ballistol or water. Mix to taste. Also Murphys Oil soap and water mix. Haven't tried the Dawn concoction. I think you are correct, cleans the bore each swab, and helps keep what fowling remains soft. The problem I run into is not the with bore but with the combustion chamber. It gets so lined with fowling that I notice the ball, even with firmness won't seat as deep., I've taken to running a dry clump of tow on a worm down into the chamber (and twisting) every 10th shot or so to keep the chamber from fowliing too badly, the tow comes out loaded with fowling. At the matches we always have a loading table so I have a rag handy to keep my hands dry. A side effect is that my hands are very clean at the end of the match. I've tried the pre lube idea and kept the patches in a jar, but they it's just as fiddly. If you leave the jar or baggy open the patches dry out, and if you keep the container closed then its just a fiddly as lubing for each shot. I doubt hunters would want a wet patch next to their charge while they were waiting for a shot. I have occasionally experimented with a light cardboard wad on top of the powder, but don't think it matters for patched round ball off hand shooting. As for all day... well that's a relative thing, the match's last two or three hours, and it seems like all day..

Good test I shoot a whole match with my recipe 20 shots with out cleaning but have a few more ingredients. I use blue water soluble cutting fluid, simple green , hoppes # 9 and water and your correct it cleans the barrel very shot !

I use Dawn and hot water to clean my black powder guns after shooting. Takes it down to the bare metal easily, then a quick re-oil and they're like new. I'm not surprised it is doing a number on fouling down the barrel, though I'd be careful about rust down here in the deep south. For this kind of shooting it looks to work a treat, but for hunting, where the barrel is going to go for a while between shots, and the way that Dawn removes oil, it could be problematic. Nice idea to have in the kit bag though.

Just a single shot for a weekend hunting, I won't use it. There's unough oil in there for one loading. Shoot it Sunday, clean and oil. Load it Friday with a dry patch.

I use windshield washer fluid to clean my BP rifle. Place a cleaning patch on the nipple and let the hammer down on it, pour in some fluid and let sit for a short time then use a cleaning patch on a rod and slowly pump it up and down making sure to wrap a dry cloth around the rod as it will bring the fluid up. Remove the cleaning patch from the nipple and pump out the fluid. Dry with cleaning patches and spray oil inside and out. 40 years with no rust and doesn’t freeze when winter shooting!

By recommendation of the fellow who built my flintlocks I've been using Birchwood Caseys muzzle magic and Hoppes black powder patch lube and bore cleaner mixed 50/50 for years as a patch lube and it does exactly the same as you experienced here. Just shoot all day you are cleaning your gun as you shoot.

My dad went mostly deaf from working on the flightline for Boeing. And shooting every weekend. So I grew up always wearing plugs or muffs even when running tools like lawn mowers. I had good hearing until about 60 when I got a virus from a tick bite. Lost 100% in the left and 80% in the right. A tick bite. After shooting a few 100,000 rounds from .22 to .54 cal. It was a lack of bug spray that got me.

Dawn dish soap was also the preferred means of cleaning off oily birds and animals from oil spills back in the 1970s, and I hear tell it's still at the top of the list of preferred products for this use.

I used to use windshield washer solvent. I would pot 50 patches in the old 35 mm film canisters and add enough fluis to wet but not soak. I could shoot all 50 rounds without fouling getting too bad. Easy cleas up with dawn and hot water.

Excellent outcome! Love it when something inexpensive and easily available actually works. I have shot several 40 round matches just spit-patching and no swab needed. 70 grains Goex 3f, Lyman Great Plains .54 caplock (1:66), CCI Magnum caps, round balls, and washed pillow ticking patches cut on the muzzle. Conditions were hot and low humidity. I kept the loose end of the ticking roll in my mouth while shooting, so it was well saturated with slobber when the time came to recharge. I run a ball/ patch combo loose enough that I don't need a ball starter, and that 40th shot loaded a little tough, but not hard enough I needed to bang on my ball (ow). I suspect that whether or not the spit patch works is largely dependent on the type of rifling and how tight the shooter's patch/ projectile combo is, as well as possibly the patch material.

Also, what time of the year, winter in Montana, the spit patched ball will freeze in the barrel, before it gets seated. In the winter, I use straight bear grease.

@@Bhartrampf As I mentioned, in my case conditions were hot and dry. I'm in northern Wyoming (can just about see Montana from my place), so I certainly know about cold. I use bear grease, whale oil, or straight Ballistol for hunting in cold weather, and don't shoot matches when it's sub-zero. The lube in the video would also fail in flash-freeze temps...obviously any water based lube is for warmer weather shooting.

When you showed the recovered patch with the unburnt powder stuck to it, it made me wonder how much unburnt powder was blown out the barrel behind it. To me, it seems the 50/50 mix of DAWN AND WATER would work ok if you were loading and shooting as fast as you can, but I'd hate to see what would happen in a hunting type situation where the rifle is loaded for maybe several hours before it's fired. I tend to think that lube/cleaner would contaminate a lot of powder and also maybe create a plug in the barrel. I have used liquid dish soap and hot water for years to clean my Black Powder Firearms and also antifreeze /coolant for your cars and trucks as black powder cleaner and all kinds of diabolical mixtures of stuff for Black Powder cleaning and lube. Some worked, and some didn't . What I found out is that most of the commercial stuff is just as good as anything I came up with for use with my Black Powder Firearms and the shooting the same. Now I do make my own bullet lube for my cast bullets for my Black Powder cartridge firearms. I also make my own paper cartridges for my cap and ball pistols. While most that make paper cartridges for their pistols complain about unburnt paper or ashes left in their cylinder chambers , I do not with my way of making mine! I guess what I'm trying to say is, " I welcome hearing what others do or make, but I take it with a grain of salt until I try it myself or figure out if I already tried it or tried it and maybe used other ingredients or so. Hell! At over 50 years of shooting, hunting, competition shooting, and

*Jake, thank you for that. I had forgotten that old trick. And, I might combine it with another idea. I might try the very snug 'half inch tall' .510" diameter 'dry/un-lubed' fiber or vegetable 'over powder wad'.... 'down bore, first' in CVA Optima stainless v2 {so called 50 cal.} actually .499" bore .511" grooves , followed by soap and water patched ball.... or pair of patched round balls. Yes, even in a fast twist 1:28 stainless barrel, over a 'moderate charge' of real black powder. Heavy Magnum charge in fast twist with patch and ball ? Not likely to be accurate. So, moderate charge to avoid spin +speed= ripping through patches. Dry fiber or vegetable wad 'to keep powder dry' might also serve as a dry bore mop and prevent burned patches. Then soap and water patch on the balls. Sometimes, two balls are better than one. And , in a 45 or smaller.... sometimes three balls are better than one... if we remain 'sensible' with the powder charge. The multi-ball load works well for coyotes and cougar. Not vastly dissimilar to 410 bore '000' buckshot.*

That is definitely cool. This is a game changer I use Olds Eynsford in my Pedersoli .54 Cal. Frontier and after the third shot It's impossible to load without swabbing the barrel once or twice. If it takes a bit of Dawn and water to allow me to shoot to my hearts content, then count me in.

When I’m going to be shooting for extended periods I put dawn and water in a jar and put some patches in and take them for swabbing between shots. I really like it for cleaning the bore. I am going to have to try it for patch lube.

The only problem is the combination of water and heat will rust the gun mighty fast, even the same hour if you drip it on the gun outside of the bore, especially if you are using an unfinished polished piece like how a lot of dueling guns are kept and that risk increases in the summer time because of the extra heat on parts that might not get all that hot normally. But oiling the gun with a good water-proofing grease before you take it out and before you pack back up will help. My dad taught me to just use crisco vegetable shortening as a lube and we've never had to clean a piece in the field, but I always kept a little dish soap water in a jar and a cleaning rod in case we needed to.

Crisco works well to lube my six shooters. It keeps the fouling soft and the pistol continues to operate after many shots. I stopped using water anywhere on or in my firearms years ago.

Where I live it's hot so crisco shortening melts pretty quick amd is hard to apply to the front of the cylinder with a knife after that happens so I always start shooting the revolvers before the day gets hotter, but my dad would pack it into toothpaste tubes to make application, easier, but if you melt the crisco in a pan on the stove and add beeswax you can pour back into a container and have a higher melting temperature version of crisco and because it's more firm It's better for wads and such.

@@jeremiahembs5343 Thanks. I have started just making paper cartridges for my six shooter and everything has changed since then. Now after I create the cartridge I dip the bullet end in melted bees wax and allow it to dry. I don't use any type of cylinder seal now other than that wax. Before I used crisco I sometimes fired the pistol so many times the cylinder would not want to turn and I would have to assist it with my hand. I used to shoot a lot more than I do now.

Since I’m new to muzzleloading I have been researching patching and patch lubes all over the net, especially in the forums. Lots of guys swear by spit and after that you get hundreds of different concoctions sworn to. Coincidentally before coming across this video, I decided to determine my best patch thickness for my rifle by bench shooting five shot groups with different patch thicknesses lubed with spit and with the Dawn/water solution. But first, I wondered what spit was composed of so I googled it. Spit is 99.5% water followed by a host of other things (many of which aren’t commercially available, thank God). Hmmm. So, I made my Dawn solution about 20% Dawn to 80% water. Spit seems to have a slight edge in the accuracy department but only just and I think I’d have to shoot a hundred groups to get a result that I’d trust. I’m not digging putting patches in my mouth though but spitting onto the patch and rubbing it in seems ok as a method. I do use the Dawn solution to swab the barrel when I start to feel that crust ring, or whatever it is, after about 12 shots using only spit. I also think I can reduce the ratio of Dawn to water to 10% and still have a just slightly slimy feeling lube. I think your conclusion about the Dawn solution slightly compromising the powder charge is probably accurate as well. That raises the question as to why spit doesn’t do that as too? But, like you guys, I just want to shoot from the pouch, or better yet, my pockets, once I find what works best in my rifle. Great video. I have what I think is great for patch lube...and you can clean with it. I use 50% Murphy's oil soap and 50% 409 degreaser.. it has worked quite well for me and the club I was in.

Nice video Jake, I have been using this soap lube for years and shoot a muzzle loading match every month with it in fact tomorrow. Our matches are a minimum of 25 shots and I never swab until the match is over. I do keep my pre lubed patches in a small pellet tin this keeps the water from evaporating. I have not seen any accuracy issues with this lube or I would not use it. Looks like you guys are having fun…

Spit patch for shooting, I never have to swab the barrel, all day. I’ve been using original formula windex for cleaning but I’ll try dawn. But what I like about windex is douching down my revolvers after every second or third cylinder full,

I've tried just about everything and the Dawn sure works but I didn't like the amount of unburned powder grains. I weigh every load and store them in tubes so I want everything to burn, not lose random amount to wetness and have wasted my time trying to produce consistent / accurate loads. I use a 1 ounce perfume sprayer with 3 parts Ballistol : 1 part water and mist my patch at loading, the little bottle stays in my possible bag nicely. And I can shoot as many times as you did but I don't worry about rust with the Ballistol

That was an interesting video. Thanks. I can’t help but wonder, if moisture would work it’s way into the powder somewhat, especially if you didn’t shoot it right away. I wouldn’t want to use them when hunting. I’m a spit user myself, so I can equate to sometimes running out of spit, as you mentioned. When I’m target shooting, I always add some cream of wheat on top of the powder. That might prevent moisture from getting to the powder too. Thanks again and keep the interesting videos coming.

I've never found anything that really makes more than 3 shots at best. I have been into BP using the Holy Black since the mid 1970s. My favorite is Tallow, Bee's wax, Murphy's Oil Soap and a little Crisco. A brush or patch turn the barrel down to dump loose fouling and keep going

Uh, yea... Never knew this was an argument. I've found that any slippery, water-based patch lube or cleaner will do this. Dish soap, Simple Green, XYZ brand BP cleaner, etc. all do the same thing -- soften & swab the fouling as you load. Most of the time, spit is fine up to about a dozen shots or so. It isn't as good but good enough. I carry a 2 oz squeeze bottle with me hunting that fits perfectly fine in my small hunting kit. Besides being a good cleaner & lube, it also gets used as a quick spot scrub if I happen to touch poison oak. Where the dish soap fails me is with flintlocks that have a chambered breech. The fouling simply continues to build in the breech since the patch can't reach it. It doesn't take more than a dozen or two shots to build up enough crud to get something that will cause a blockage of some kind. Percussion sparks get injected with enough force to blow past any of these blockages but my flintlocks can't manage to clear them without disassembly.

Ok, so now you’ve got me thinking. You could try and put a small amount of Paper Hornet nest material on top of the powder charge to protect it from the moisture. Sam Fadala talks about using that to protect patches in his black powder book from the 80’s. It’s really good, and I highly recommend it. Also, I’m wondering if you spray the patches ahead of time and let dry, if you’d get the same results.

Okay - definitely slimy feeling. But by golly, I have to say it works. 53 shots this past weekend without any need to stop and clean the barrel. Not sure I'd be comfortable with it as a hunting load, but it is definitely the way to go on the target range.

interesting video. I've used this as well as a mixture of Simple Green and water to spray on patches. It works as advertised. I still like a more traditional waxy type lube better but if your rifle was sighted in with this mixture I see no reason why it would not work. Essentially swabbing the barrel each time you load. Now, the guy with the striped shirt working on snapping his flint on a hot (loaded) rifle was making me really nervous the way the muzzle was flagging around and how it was pointed back away from the line. I was hoping it would not go bang back there at the tailgate.

I've been using a felt wad soaked with 50/50 bee's wax & tallow in my .32 cap lock (the very same as my .31 revolvers). Previously it was near impossible to load after 2 shots without spit patch cleaning (using Goex FFFg). Perhaps a combination of the the two methods will be better still. I use a moose milk lube now because of cold weather preformance. I have used olive oil, spit patch, Murphy's oil soap, mixtures of all the above, and all sorts of other weird shit. Keeping patches slimy with any lube and I can shoot 20+ rounds without swabbing with no change in perceivable accuracy. Now if I was hunting, where my rifle would stay loaded for hours-days I wouldnt use a slimy patch. But in a load and shoot senerio I would bet any slimy type lube would give very similar results. Group size on paper may differ slightly per rifle as it's black powder and voodoo type shit for every gun. But to each their own.

I have used wonder lube 1000 without issue. Wonder lube does make it easier to clean. It does however take a little bit of effort to "season" the bore to wonder lube. I think wonder lube also has pre lubed patches. Cheers.

That CVA/Traditions Mountain rifle needs an L&R Replacement lock. And the likely the touch hole needs relief. I have a CVA Squirrel rifle in Flintlock that is a tack driver and very fast after the new lock. However the lock cost more than the gun LOL!

I’m not picking on him to be mean or anything of the sort (and Mr camera man if you’re reading this; no offense intended I know the habit well and it’s hard to break). that said. Although I appreciate much or a lot of what the camera man adds to the conversation/video and overall experience, he has got to got to quit interrupting and talking over you when you’re trying to speak and especially when you’re trying to answer a question he asks. IAgain I do enjoy much of what he’s adding to the conversation. I use 1 cup of Dawn 1 cup Murphy’s oil soap and 9 oz of hopes. In a gallon jug and fill with water. Shoot all day at .Bp shoot. I will add food coloring mostly green and red. I presoak patches and put in sandwich bag..

Soft soap maybe plus a little FuFu-Juice (water) should work, too. It is not liquid, more like grease. Hand cream with water content was recommendet in old books. It is more skin friendly.

I got the same results from a product called "Young Country." It's a paste, so you can pre-lube patches and they don't feel slimey. Problem is, they don't make it anymore! Such a shame!

Back in the early 80's an " Old Timer" ( about my age now) got me to using a mix of 3oz. dish soap, 3oz. black powder solvent, mixed with 1 gal. of water. I get around 6-10 shots between swabbing using Pyrodex. I'm going to try your slimy Dawn mix, if it works with Pyrodex, it's damn good. I use a 4oz. squeeze bottle. small enough to easily carry in your pouch.

My wife, "Mommy Dearest" has me washing the dishes using Dawn dish detergent, and I have to say that the Dawn is excellent at getting the grease off of the dishes and pots and pans. I started using it to clean my Smoke Poles with scalding hot water, and the stuff does a good job of getting rid of the residue. I have been using bore butter on my patches, but I do swab the bore after a couple of shots, unless I am hunting. I wonder just how much powder in the barrel does not do its job of exploding being coated with dawn and water. I think I'll stick with what has been working well for me for a good long while. Load a dawn patch up and leave it in the barrel for a few hours and see how things happen.

What little I know about it, I've read from the guys in the cartridge world who shoot black powder that the easiest way to clean the bore of a gun after shooting a good number of black powder shots is to douse the bore with hot soapy water. The black powder is water-soluble easily. So, from that aspect I assume the 50/50 water and soap is basically a small dose of fouling remover doing its thing every shot, keeping the fouling condition low and steady, beyond the obvious lubrication that Dawn provides. The guys I've seen on Sagebrush Longshots channel shooting 45 cal (rifled) black powder run a wet patch down the bore after every shot, presumably to keep bore conditions consistent.
