Magical places inspire magical stories - St Winifred's Well

In my Dragon Trilogy books, the town where the book is set is very important. You could even say it is one of the characters. The fictional town of St Gertrude's in my books, is set in a place very like Holywell in North Wales. Here's the map reference: www.google.co.uk/maps/place/H...
My Grandmother was born and brought up there. The story of St Winifred of Holywell is inspiration for scenes and back story in the books. St Winifred spurned here suitor's advances as she wished to become a nun . He was a bit fed up, so he chopped off her head with a sword - you can see the line on her neck in the statue at 2:48
Her head rolled down the hill and where in came to rest, water sprung out and has done ever since. Her uncle put here head back on and she cam back to life and did indeed become a nun and, eventually, a saint.
People come to bathe in the waters hoping to cure their illnesses. The site is known as the Lourdes of Wales.

Local boy here! Next time you're in the area pop into the Friary abpve Holywell, they do lovely food and Greenfield park at the bottom of the hill from St Wini's is also worth a visit but you probably know that already.

The story of the Fun Ship is actually quite simple. Originally named the Duke of Lancaster and a passenger ferry, it was deliberately beached to act as a pre built entertainment complex, however it never overcame problems such as access, not least for emergency vehicles as well as many disagreements with the local council. Park in the craft centre called "Abakhan" and walk down the coastal path, there's a gate at the end of the carpark furthest from the shops, you'll get a great view and not trespass. Greenfield museum and park is further down the road from Holywell passed ST Wini's and there are a couple of carparks. On site there are old industrial buildings and the water management ponds for water wheels. Basingwerk Abbey is also here, a lovely ruin since the dissolution of the monastries. You can park in Holwelywell near Tesco and walk down the old railway path, it'll take you passed Watts Dyke, an earthwork contemporary with Offa's Dyke. As quick visit to Whitford cross, a few miles from Holywell is well worth it, if you like 1000 year old celtic wheel crosses just stood in a field! cheers Dave
