@jeremiah simmons I don't think it's as much of a surprise as might be imagined. Jazz manouche is like shred metal played in an old folk style. As an example, playing the rhythm guitar in that style requires really accurate and rhythmically precise downpicking. Same for swing and big band rhythm guitar, which is blazing away at some seriously high BPM. You really have to relax and get your fretting hand shapes and picking hand perfect. The leads are also using a lot of the more exotic scales that players like Uli Jon Roth brought into metal. Metal drumming owes a ton to big band, too. Django, Stephane, and the band were among the the technical masters of their time and the people continuing to play in the style they pioneered have continued to evolve from the very high bar they set. Check out some Ellington from the time to hear just how amazing the musicians who played with the Duke were, too.

@@crimfan spot on. I LOVE metal, but many other styles of music as well. What these guys are doing could be excellent when done right by a metal band. I actually came across These guys by looking for covers of Django and Stephane. They did not disappoint.

You guys should get more recognition. Every instrument was played with an astounding sensibility. The sensibility to play the right note by reading the mood is the power to guide the audience and everyone who is listening to emotions and feelings. This is the ability to produce a catharsis at will, and is not something you come up from a day to another: It's something built from years of practice, and is every musician's biggest objective. Hope I expressed my awe right, because english is not my main language. I wish you guys all the achievements and success in the world. Thank you for sharing this.

I think Sleepless and Jasons performance, pinpoints the problems with current 'gypsy lazy'. You can tell by Jasons tone that this is about storytelling, that each note stems fram Jasons heart and is made important. You can sense it, which is why it stands out. And this is contrary to much of the current so called 'gypsy jazz', which is more about licks learnt and measured. Intellectual athletics where you strive for stunning performance of blistering technique rather than grab the hearts of the audience with emotions. Swing manouche is about resting in the rhythm and then adding the notes of the story you're about to tell. The almost exaggerated vibrato is typical of the gypsy fiddle, a tool for really really aiming for the heart of the listener. And Django transferred this tool to the guitar were it was possible, which set the Django-style apart from other swing guitarists. Jasons performance is beautiful on Sleepless. And the day when he can perform swing manouche-standards and make every note just as important as the notes he plays in Sleepless, he will explode on us because the songwriting is there. It's all about grasping and mastering the exaggerated gypsy fiddle vibrato, a manouche trademark known long before Django Reinhardt and swing manouche.
