How did anybody expect that thin plastic and glass coffin to hold up to the weight of that much concrete in the first place? Did nobody consider that this would probably happen or were people just way to confident in his escape artist skills?

Yeah... I'm assuming he did trial runs? Did he use concrete? Was the box actually designed correctly but built wrong maybe so it worked during his practice runs but failed here? Maybe the cement had a different composure than the mix used before (ie, more dense or more water weight)?

Well most people would probably assume that the magician knew what they were doing. When a well known illusionist/magician/escape artist does stuff like this it's kind of assumed that they have some kind of trick to get out of these situations or that the stunts are well planned. If someone was standing on the roof of a building in stereotypical magician clothes and telling people they were going to jump and fly, people would think they're watching some planned stunt and might not even call the police.

I use to do a lot of trench work, and the horror stories I've heard about people caught in a trench collapse is very gruesome. A cubic yard of soil weighs 3k pounds, and when you have anything over 2 cubic yards collapse on you.... everything inside of you gets pushed out of every orifice of your body. Blood, organs, veins.... everything. All out through your eyes, ears, nostrils, rectum, and pee hole... everything. Edit: A trench as shallow as 5 feet can have at least 2 cubic yards looming above you. I regularly found myself in trenches sometimes 20ft. Deep. Fortunately for me, I never went into a trench deeper than 4 feet without a trench box. Contractors hated it when I demanded a trench box be put in place, because it takes time, but I'm still alive.

I could only imagine what was going through his mind right before the collapse. He heard the creaking and cracking of the glass and plastic probably for a good while and it would have gotten worse and worse. He 100% knew it was going to give out on him and there was nothing he could have done to get out of it. I'm willing to bet he was shouting "Stop get me out." or "Help" but no one could hear him.
@michaelgeorge4643

That was my thought as well. There's no chance it just collapsed in one instant without there being bowing/bending and cracking before, because it's just plastic and glass after all. While attempting this stunt is incredibly stupid and dangerous, people that are dumb/brave enough to attempt it in the future should be required to do it with a "panic" button that they can press that immediately notifies the assistants on the surface to abort the stunt
@amandaschuller4546

Yeah, I was wondering: why didn't he have a rescue alert he could signal? Like, the whole saying "saved by the bell" came from how you tied a string to a finger of a corpse before burial, with the far end attached to a bell. Because if they *weren't dead*, they'd ring the bell as they woke back up, and you'd know to come rescue them as fast as you could. Where's his bell? 1990, there's be tech where all it does is ping a pager or some kind of receiver if he sends the signal.

Back in the early 00's I watched a show called RealTV. One episode they did a segment on this particular magic trick. What's crazy is a magician tried this in the late 90's and survived. He had worked himself out of his cuffs and chains, and was about to open a secret door in the side of the coffin when the thing collapsed. He was wedged between the door and the concrete which allowed him a breathing area, but he still broke bones and nearly suffocated.

I'm so confused. Did this guy leave behind any notes that indicated how he intended to escape? If his coffin hadn't imploded, it still really, really seems like he would just die in there... unless he had some secret reinforced loose earth tunnel dug under the coffin, that wound up around where the cement would go, and into the side of where he was supposed to emerge, with a coffin trapdoor and I guess some supplemental oxygen? I don't see how he'd get out under any circumstance, but I'd love to hear what his plan was. He should've had another coffin made and buried it in a ton of cement as a test. As for this other dude who passed out: uh, what are you thinking bud? Why not start by being buried crouched in a *3* foot hole instead of a 10 foot hole and see how you do, and then try a 5 foot hole, 6, etc? That way, you can realize that the earth is going to kill you _before_ you're actually dying in it.

@@Troy_nov1965 yeah. I did it for a couple summers in my teens. It really blows my mind how insanely terrible of an idea this trick was. The guy must have been on some kind of manic episode to even conceive of this idea. Even aside from the weight issue, the stuff is extremely caustic and dangerous to human tissues. There’s simply no path through such a dumb trick outside of not even being inside that box before the stuff even gets poured, which makes for a really bad illusion anyway. And this is why I prefer Penn and Teller's logic for magic, the illusion is not you avoiding death the illusion is you looking as if you were in danger at all. They will not do anything that actually puts them in danger because they know that they are human and humans make mistakes and when those mistakes mean death it's just not worth it. Alex Honnald said something along the lines of this when speaking about his free soloing: "What I do is not risky, what I do has severe consequences if I make a mistake but the chances of me making a mistake like that is very small because if I am doing something it means that I have planned it out, practiced it, and trained to have backups". This guy seemed to have none of the preparation with all of the confidence, if something like you getting choked in the beginning of the stunt happened why on earth would you continue to try to go through with it? Clearly there is a flaw in your plan if that happened so maybe go back to the drawing board, also maybe you know work up from a thin layer of concrete or better yet don't do it at all but this guy said "yeah I did it with dirty, fuck it, full send just layer it all on me" Like if he had done any testing at all he'd have known how what he was doing was impossible, you only need to ever touch wet concrete to know that not only would it be impossible to dig out of but you also wouldn't be able to lift the lid to open it in the first place. I'd like to think that people in the age of the internet would know that this was a stupid suicidal stunt, sadly society simply self-destructs seeking status streaming socials. People will do anything for clout even if odds are they will die doing it.

I had always assumed that the coffin was in fact meant to collapse which is why it did. However, if my theory is correct he wasn't supposed to still be in it when that happened. I had always assumed that one of the sides of the coffin was easily movable and that he was going to escape into a pre-dug safe room alongside the grave. It was my belief that he was supposed to be out of the coffin once it was covered with a thin layer of dirt thus leaving his actual escape hidden from the crowd. Once enough dirt was in place to cover his escape from the coffin, he would roll through the false side into a concealed door leading to his small underground safe room. Once there he could comfortably wait and perhaps even watch the footage from above on a TV. Once the grave was filled he would dig his way out via a much higher up hatch also located in the safe room and merely pretend that he had dug through all the layers or more than likely just magically appear behind everyone via some type of concealed hatch that led to a place that was behind a piece of equipment or otherwise at least semi-obscured from the audience. The purposely collapsing grave was just to add a flare of tension and drama. Of course this is all just conjecture.

I think that makes sense, surely he was meant to untie himself by the time he's out of view and then escape a different way. He can't have planned to lift up the lid of the coffin ever

I wonder how it went wrong then? Did one of the latches get stuck? Did he take too long unchaining himself?

That thin plexiglass coffin was connected using cheap door hinges and was flexing like crazy. How the hell did anyone think it could support several tons of concrete?

According to a Medium article I found "The original plan was for Joe to secretly emerge from the coffin while the cement was being poured, giving the illusion of emerging after being buried." Which really doesn't explain much. Once he got out of the coffin he would still have to not suffocate and not be crushed. That seams pretty difficult given that other people got suffocated and crushed by dirt, and dirt is much less dense than wet cement.

The fact that this guy tied this stunt without checking beforehand if it was feasible is extremely foolhardy, especially when using a _glass and plastic coffin under wet cement!_

It’s almost as if death itself saw this stunt, and the very act of escaping the grave, as a personal affront to it, and took measures to ensure he’d never leave that coffin alive.

Call me heartless but I personally don't feel as bad for him as I do with many others in this series. I mean sure it sucks he died, but at the same time, he (as far as I can tell from this) willingly laid down in his own grave and told people to fill it. This is just darwinism.

Over the last 10 years I have handled a lot of different aspects of residential construction. As soon as I saw that wet cement going over that glass/plastic coffin I knew how it would end. Its insane how he got to the point of going through with it. Seeing the guys lower him in, If I were one of them, I would have tried to stop it, or at least refused to participate. I do not know how the dude with the concrete truck did not take one look at the job, say "nope" and drive off. Human life is worth too much for this.

I lived in Fresno when this happened, I was probably about 7 years old. The event was held at a place called Blackbeard’s family fun center or something. It was a place with an arcade and little rides and games for kids so I’m sure there were kids there. My father is a news anchor who at the time worked for KFSN ch30 in Fresno so he told me all about it that night. If I remember correctly Blackbeard’s drew a rose in the cement where it happened.
