One of the saddest lines in movie was never heard and Robert Zemeckis let us know later on. When Forrest was cut off at the monument he actually said this: "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mamas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."

When Jenny and Lt Dan meet for the first time they must have felt like old friends! I can’t imagine Forrest talked about much else than Jenny on the boat, and he must have told Jenny every story about Lt Dan that there was to tell. He sure did love to recount those stories.

It's pretty clear that she understands english very well. She grasps advanced concepts after seeing them only once when it takes alot of native english speakers multiple viewings to get everything. If you care at all about improvement the biggest and most noticeable thing is your lack of vocabulary. You keep using the same vague words and phrases.

Actually, in Europe, bilingualism and multilingualism is much more common than monolingualism. In most countries we learn English from the age of 7 or 8. Her English is ok, her pronunciation is lacking, however, but she can be understood so it's fine.

I am always so touched when Jenny is throwing rocks at her old house and Forrest says that "Sometimes, I guess there just aren't enough rocks." He completely understood her wounds and anger and why she was so emotionally damaged. He never judged her the way some viewers do. He just loved her through her pain.

Lt. Dan walking again is one of my favorite moments ever. He thought he lost everything. But Forrest saved him and he spent a great amount of time with Lt. Dan to the point where Dan felt happy at the fact that he survived. Look where that got him... back on his own two feet and with a woman who loved him. :)

I never realized this the first 10 times I saw this movie but there was one day where I finally came to realize that Jenny's solution to every uncomfortable situation has been to "run." That's what she did with her dad, that's why she told Forrest to run, that's why she ran away every time she felt something for Forrest until she couldn't run anymore and even then, she ran away one final time from Forrest.

One thing I thought about what Forrest says "you gotta put the past behind you before you can move on" it took Forrest 3 1/2 years of running and it took Jenny her whole life but she finally did it. I think her leaving that final time was Jenny putting her past behind her and leaving the Medal of Honor was symbolic of that. I don't think she would have reached out to Forrest if she didn't get "sick" but I do believe she loved Forrest and obviously wanted her son taken care of. This is my favorite movie of all-time, it's fun to hear different people's take on things! ✌

Jenny's life is a juxtaposition to Forrest Gump's life. They both go through troubling childhood experiences. However, Forrest had the benefit of an awesome parent to guide them through the difficulties of life. Whereas Jenny never had that and she was left to search for that comfort as a broken person. Amazing writing to give the story an anchor as well as a propelling force to drive Forrest Gump forward in life.

I think it’s worse than that; while Forrest had a nurturing and loving mother who went above and beyond average to give her him the best upbringing, the way Jenny’s father acted served to destroy her.

Worst part is, because Jenny's primary abuser was her father, it literally destroyed her ability to trust anybody that was nurturing. Thus the reason she always runs away from Forrest after a short while. Her brain is literally hotwired to think, "Uh on. Caring figure. Male. Danger. Do not approach. Do not get involved. Get the hell away as quickly as possible." I think the real revelation about how Jenny felt about Forrest was when she appeared at his house out of the blue while he was mowing the grass, and then snuck up to his bedroom after being asked if she would marry him. Whatever her reasons may have been, I believe that was the one time she was willing to trust someone. And for better or worse, Forrest was the one figure who delivered without failure. Unfortunately, for Jenny, old neurology kicked in, and she just wasn't willing to let somebody that close to her after a period of time.

Fun fact: The actor for young Forrest really does talk like that in real life. So when Tom Hanks first met him, he thought it was so unique and adopted that boy's personality as his own when he portrayed Forrest Gump as an adult as a special nod to the boy who was the inspiration for child Forrest.

One of the things that made this film so iconic was the distinct way Forrest spoke. Ironically, that isn't the way it was written. The actor who played young Forrest, Michael Conner Humphreys, actually spoke like that. So, instead of trying to "fix" the way the kid spoke, Tom Hanks would sit and talk to him for hours while recording their conversations. Hanks then listened to the recordings in order to mimic the boys speech pattern. Michael Humphreys, by the way, actually ended up serving in the Marines and now speaks normally without any hint of flat monotone he had as a child.

The feather goes wherever the wind blows. It is a metaphor for Forrest and Jenny. The "winds" took them in very different directions but they somehow managed to find each other later in life and were able to be together even if it was just for a brief time.

I think the feather is a metaphor for Forrest's life - drifting along by the will of others, never really directing his course. He ran because coaches told him to, he joined the army because a recruiter told him to, he started shrimping because Bubba asked him to, he ran aimlessly for 3 years because he didn't have anyone to tell him what to do (and because of his grief at Jenny leaving), finally he married Jenny because she asked him (although he did ask first). When he was saving all those people in Viet Nam, it showed him saving all those people because they were asking for help, even though at first all he wanted to do was save Bubba.

Lt. Dan's anger came from building his whole life around following in the path of his forefathers', being in the military, leading, fighting, and dying in a major war. He felt it was his destiny and felt like Forrest robbed him of his chance to die a war hero. Instead, Forrest left him a living cripple and Forrest was declared the hero.

Jenny of course being the most complex, and thus the most misunderstood character in the movie. She didn't just run from Forest, she ran from every relationship in her life, starting with her father. That was her defense mechanism from what her father did to her.

One of my favourite films. The same mantra ("anytime you get scared just run") had such a different impact on two friends lives; it made Forrest a national hero and almost completely ruined Jenny. I guess it really matters what you're running from and why. Or in Jenny's case what you're scared of and why. When Jenny shouted "You don't know what love is" at Forrest, she is really shouting at herself. Only when she experienced a mother's love unwittingly did she realise that there wasn't anything to be scared of and stopped running. Forrest showed ignorance is bliss. Jenny showed it doesn't matter how worldly you are; ignorance of love is misery.

Lt. Dan built his entire life based on the men in his family before him, around the military and dying in battle. He believed it was his destiny in life. When that didn't happen, he was not only crippled, but he was also empty inside. EVERYTHING he built his self image in was gone. Only a shell is left because he doesn't know who or what he is now. And he doesn't even ponder what he is now, because he believes it's nothing. He, with help from Forest found his life beyond that. Honestly I would love to see a movie around Lt. Dan. Covering some of the unseen between times. It's always heartwarming when people realize that Jenny did love Forrest. Always did. But her childhood trauma haunted her for decades and prevented her from being in a healthy relationship with him. She wasn't an awful person. She was trying with all she had to avoid taking advantage of Forrest, like she was taken advantage of when she was a child. So she drifted from one shitty relationship to the next, where she would never take advantage of anyone, instead letting them use and abuse her. It wasn't until she got sick and had to think about her son's future that she simply accepted Forrest's unconditional love and returned it in kind. She's not a bad person; she's a one woman tragedy.

One of the reasons I don’t usually enjoy reactions to this movie is because so many reactors just hate on her & so do the commenters. I think it’s pretty obvious why she can’t commit to Forrest. The whole “Make me a bird so I can fly away,” pretty much became her life.

I studied acting in college and I recited the same monologue from this movie when Forrest says his speech over Jenny's grave. It was so powerful and emotional to me, that is why I wanted to do this for my acting class. The message I gather from this movie - There are things in this world we cannot control, but what we can control is our attitude and chose to be positive :)

I have to say, when I see reactors watch this movie for the first time, I get emotional because I know how much they are just going to fall in love with it. It's a top-10 movie of all time, for sure...at least in my opinion. "Sometimes, I guess there just aren't enough rocks." (one of my favorite lines from the movie) Very nice reaction, and I am so impressed when people can watch a movie not in their native language and actually get it. I know it's somewhat common in countries outside of the US, but it's still quite impressive.

Forrest Gump opens and closes with the image of a white feather floating through the air. In the opening, it comes to rest in Forrest's suitcase. At the end, it flies back up into the air, helping to symbolize the cycle that has now been completed-specifically, the cycle of life and death, and one of new beginnings.

Everything from your compassion for Jenny, your pride at Forrest keeping his promise to bubba and his family and your empathy when Forrest asks Jenny if little Forrest is smart. The scene where Forrest speaks to Jenny at her grave he says "Jenny, I don't know if Momma(feather) was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan(destiny). I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time". I love what you took away from the feather metaphor about opportunity because that idea never occurred to me, so I'm really glad you are giving us the in-depth breakdown at the end otherwise we might miss out on gems like this. Also your English is a lot better than you think. You corrected yourself at the beginning of the reaction when you said it perfect the first time around. I played professional tennis back in the 1990’s and while at a club in the state of Georgia in the summer of 1995, I met one of the boys who chased Forrest on the bicycles when his leg braces fell off. They paid him $125 and gave him the bicycle that he rode in the scene for his payment for playing the part. This is one of the greatest movies about personal human struggle that I think has ever been made. As many horrible things that happened to Forrest, he never gave up and never gave in. Life and Karma rewarded him greatly for his effort. What a movie.🏆🏆🏆

Hey Long Gray Line, that is a really cool story, thank you for sharing! I wonder if there are any other big movies/shows that this boy acted in. I agree with your comment on this movie. Forrest Gump is such a heart-felt underdog story, and despite it being fictional, I still think it has moments that most people can relate to on an emotional level. The performances across the board are also so well done (Gary Sinese as Lt. Dan is 1 of my favorites)! And personally, I feel I can connect with this movie a lot because my brother has Autism (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). I actually posted a video on my channel back in February that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique. Jenny gets a lot of thrash but she didn't think she was in love with Forrest because she thought she was taking advantage of him the same way her father molested her. Every time Forrest gets close she gets scared she is taking advantage of him and runs away. She keeps leaving Forrest behind because she convinces herself that he doesn't really love her. She convinces herself that his affections are shallow, since he would never be able to really understand love either. It takes her whole life to figure out that love is so simple that even Forrest can understand it and she gives in and loves him. Take that scene with Forrest and her in her college dormroom. Had the genders been reversed, people would be so extremely uncomfortable about that scene because it'd be inching so close to rape. Jenny knows that. She realizes that. She thinks she is molesting him. So she runs away. Again.

There's a lot of intense and amazing parts. I'm still awestruck by the moment Jenny tells him about the kid being his. The shame/sadness he portrays. It probably just entered Forests' head that he may have genetically given his lifelong problem to an innocent kid. Tom Hanks is known as a great actor but this movie really was exceptional.

Magy the beauty of this movie is the journey through life it takes you on running the spectrum of human emotions. Magy you were able to get many of the deeper meanings, like Jenny being a victim through out her life. Myself personally I love the running motif through out the film. Well done Magy. Robin Wright stars in 2 of my favorite films this one as Jenny and as Buttercup in the Princess Bride a movie I highly recommend

Tom hanks and the directive Robert Zemeckis helped finance this movie because the studio didn’t have faith in it, so they kept lowering the budget but Tom and Robert wanted to make this movie their way. Good thing to since it’s such a beautiful movie.
