Sponge Ball magic is not just for kids (and grown ups). I occasionally help out in a nursing home and entertain the elderly. People with problems with their eyes but also with limited mobility in their hands. But also with dementia. Red soft fluffy balls. That always works. It doesn't have to be grand magic. Simple movements like the ones you suggested during shopping. I always have a handful of balls with me. Really cheap ones, which I then give away after I've magically produced them. It's always a big hello with the people. And you can always find the balls in the home, on nightstands, etc. One of my favorite experiences at Christmas was when an old lady with dementia gave me back the ball saying, "Now hang it back on the Christmas tree". It's all a matter of interpretation.

Teaches you about misdirection. It is so easy to get a ball out of a pocket when people are watching the balls jump out of someone’s hand. Great video! Mark Wilson’s book is amazing!

The book I treasure in my collection is The Encyclopedia of Sponge Ball Magic by Frank Garcia. Frank Garcia signed the book for me when I bought it at Tannen’s on September 24, 1977. I have always used my sponge ball routine as an opener to my magic show.

I've been doing sponge bunnys for over two decades, and it's still one of my most requested tricks to show people who have seen it and tell others! I never thought I'd get so much mileage out of a 2 dollar trick. Thank you David for the wonderful presentation.

Great to see the humble sponge ball get the appreciation it deserves, the definitive "packs small, plays big" item. One resource I would highly recommend is Magic Makers 'Encyclopedia of Sponge Ball Magic', solid gold.

I use a red sponge ball with a split in it. This allows me to stick it on my nose. Great for those that work with children. I bring a small child up to help. I vanish the ball and stick it on my nose. I ask the child if they know where it went. The audience laughs as the child looks all around for the ball. Finally I say " it is as clear as the nose on my face." Eventually they look up and I usually get an even bigger laugh from the audience at this point. This simple trick goes over well with the children and adults.

I used the Patrick Page routine you mentioned as part of my admission exam to join London's Magic Circle, and it got me in! It's a great routine, and unlike some others, when it ends you are totally re-set for the next performance.

TCC Magic has a new spongeball (red only at the moment) under their brand whose density is between supersoft and regular. They have a great feel to them. You can get 4, but 16 are about $19. A fantastic routine (video on their site and KZbin) is Pure Cup. The resin clear cup is crazy expensive ($80), but the routine is that good and that different. You nee a 2nd color. My guess is supersoft in 2 colors works best. A review of Pure Cup?

Very nice. I haven't used sponge balls for a long time, but had great fun when I was learning with them. I had borrowed a book from the library that had some routines. I had no access to sponge balls at the time, so I bought a large yellow sponge used to wash cars and spent a couple of hours cutting and trimming 4 large cubes of sponge into something that resembled balls. Not perfect, but probably unique!

Thank you for your great video post on sponge balls. Years ago, Christopher Ballinger, who worked for the now defunct Magic Geek online magic store, made and sold sponge balls that looked like the characters from the "Angry Birds" computer phone game, which was and still is, to some degree, popular with mostly younger folks. He started his routine by making an angry bird appear from his phone screen from the game. He would then do an entire "3D" routine of the game using his modified and painted sponge balls (see video link below). I think that idea is an incredibly creative way to use sponge balls and I think there are probably a lot of similar things that could be done today to make sponge balls more interesting to folks. If a magician finds out what their target audience relates to, they could strike gold and get great reactions from their little pieces of sponge. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX3XiJWca7CIl7s

I LOOOVE Michael Finney's Sponge ball opener from WGM DVD, it's so much fun! Especially the 5" ball bit ;) When I started doing magic for kids parties, my first purchase included some sponge balls and a blooming blossom... I've never seen anyone combining the two props, but it works really great for sponge ball production ;)

How do you merge sponge balls with a blooming blossom?
@magicdmitry9 ай бұрын
@@LeighZeitzDrZ First, make sure the flower part is the same color as the sponge balls. Do the "usual" flower gag - put it under your arm, - the flower is there, kids will tell you that it's there, look at it - it's gone.. do this two or three times, then claim: it hides from me!!! [secretly get a sponge ball in your hand] Close your eyes, then FEEL the flower!! It's there! [hide the flower while it's covered by your hand] "Pluck" it out, and now there is a sponge ball in your hand!!!

Great video David, and your right, sponge balls will entertain all ages and all languages too. One book that I got when I first got into magic was "Sponge Ball Manipulation' by Audley Walsh. I still do the routine I learned from that book. A couple of others are Frank Garcia's "Sponge Balls" and "The Sponge Book" By Al Goshman.
