The difference Between a good commentator in that role and a bad one is if they are asking good questions or not. In my opinion, Spartz is fairly good at this, and has enough knowledge about the game and the field to give meaty questions to arguably the most knowledgeable commentator in the game.

his misplay was not activating green puzzleknot to gain life before combat damage. since he waited until after combat damage to activate it, pierre used dynavolt tower in response to kill him before the life gain resolved.

He actually did it before combat damage, it simply didn't matter. At 11, attacked for 12 (two 4/4s and a 4/1), cracks to go up to 14, dynavolted back down to 11, then takes lethal combat damage.
