We have recently spent some time back in Perth and had the opportunity to weigh up the pros and cons of life in Australia. It is certainly a nice place but it has its drawbacks.

It's a city for families. If you are young and single, there's not much to do. Fortunately two of the greatest cities in the world, Sydney and Melbourne, are four hours away so you can still come home every couple of months.

Melbourne and Sydney are the Golden cities where the country basically stands on its feet, they’re the first tier cities, built around finance mostly. Perth is a second tier city, very much like Brisbane, mine based economies and stuff like that. Then you have Adelaide which is really just there, out dated and going nowhere.

@@deltamx Port Philip Bay? come on, it is just a Bay not Ocean...you have to come out of Melbourne and visit the beaches in WA, they are more beautiful than all the beaches in Melbourne and can even beat Great Ocean Road I used to love. Yes there are more cafes and tall buildings in Melbourne, however Perth has changed a great deal in the past few years, the entire CBD has been upgraded to a brand new city with tall office buildings and hotels like Ritz Carlton Towers, there are also many trendy apartments, it is no longer an inward looking provincial city you thought. The metro system in Perth is also the best in Australia, comparing to Melbourne the stations here are very clean and train service is always punctual, you can even charge your mobile phones on the train. On the other hand, Melbourne is pretty old, dirty and congested, property prices are sky high. Having said that I do miss the cafes in Brunswick and Acland St in St Kilda, there are also cafe strips in Perth, the only problem is the population is small, most of the time they are not crowded. The coffee in Melbourne tastes much better.

Let us bear in mind few important points: AUSTRALIA IS CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL EVERYWHERE. The infrastructure and the public service amazes and not to be found anywhere in the world. Parks are manicured and well kept on regular basis. The fact that Australia has low populations is a great asset. Less people , less pollution and problems. One can live very well in Australia. We have lived in various parts of the world including Africa and Latin America. As many nowadays we have travelled extensively and done our research. Australia is pretty unique and, to our eyes it is the New America. Prices are related with income - a sensible comparison will do. If you earn money in Oz well you can have a great quality of life and afford many things that in other countries are not that easy. If one comes from countries with a currency stronger thatn the Ozzie dollar - then, nothing really is "that" expensive with the exception of houses. Whether you wish to buy or to rent - well, prices are not low. Australia has it all in climate and choices. Most importat Australia offers a great lifestyle appealing to all ! Check on other cities and places if you wish as it is relevant to have a proper perspective. We have also travelled within Australia and lived in Tasmania for fews years. Also in Melbourne and , all being well, heading for WA in the future. By the way, taking time to get to places in WA or else is NOT necessary something negative: one can fly if you wish to be there in a short timeand if not, enjoy the amazing scenery and get to know the history of each place and their people. Good luck everyone!

Cons: Extremely hot, cancerous sun with very high UV rate, floods, bush fires, annoying flies, super noisy birds, spiders, huge cockroaches, snakes, sharks, crocodiles, jelly fish, extremely expensive housing, service , food and travel, high meth usage and therefore aggression, high crime rate almost everywhere, especially thievery and assaults, not safe to walk at night in the major entertainment spots and cities. No culture. Antisocial behaviour. Youth gangs. Homelessness.

Compared to Sydney, the driving time to get to places in Perth is absolutely nothing! I agree that it's definitely very clean in comparison to many places, and the proximity to the beach is fantastic. For me the low population density is a plus - it's nice to have a bit of peace! The distance from the rest of the world (plus ski fields) is definitely a con though.

Perth is a great city and surely one of the best places to live in spite of the cons. Hi, nice videos :) By the way, Perth's public transport and PSPs (which they learnt and half-succeeded from the win-win Dutch) are like "wow!" from a much worse-designed city of Australia's perspective, but still, not really on the world stage. Many cities of 100,000 in Europe have better systems, and the sprawl (while not as bad as the other major cities) still reduces the diversity and choice of living, which is not very sustainable for an isolated city (or any). Freo, Subi, and central Perth look nice though

Said nothing about the social aspects, medical or nature of most the people. Being new here I can only say this- some people are friendly, some people are not- seems to still be a bit of anti-outsider attitude here by the locals. Sad to see many aboriginals on the streets- homeless- tells you about the prejudices a bit...Services are inefficient and slow esp with banks, net or cell phone coverage. Personally, I thought it would be more efficient and progressive than NZ but it isn't... Lots of disorganisation and inefficiencies with businesses and prices can be incredibly high and you still can get crap... high for everything- food, haircuts, beauty care....I hate to say this- although there are smart people, the average IQ does not seem to be high. I have had to spell my Irish first name 5 times being only a 4 letter simple name and they constantly still spell it wrong.... perhaps genetic dyslexias are more common here due to the high drinking culture. Lots of inconsistancies when trying to obtain info from local businesses like banks, insurance companies, agencies. Called Bupa 3 times for medical insurance and asking for the same thing from 3 different calls I got 3 different prices- $45, 90 and 176. When getting a computer repair they did a costly repair along with another that I did not consent to. Also wish to say there is some prejudice and sexism here too, more than N America or UK... seeking some professional services I experienced a lot of bias and prejudice from a Aussie female who obviously did not like me. Prices for food are high and selections are limited as if you are used to getting imported fruit you will get stuck with Aus only which is not always good- papaya fruit has no seeds, potatoes and sweet potatoes always taste like cow manure... I think the life in NZ is overall better and prices cheaper there despite the pay being lower there. However healthcare is better in Aus than in NZ- got a good dentist. Also want to say in 3 weeks I encountered 3 incidences of violence- one at train station- a girl going off hitting the guard, second one at local insurance company - a lady yelling and screaming bitch fuck at insurance agent and angry as hell, a female murdered in W Perth- I walked by the murder scene and a man blocking traffic walking alongside a busy street with a push/pull suitcase on wheels who had no sidewalk to walk on because of construction so a car constantly honked at him so he blocked traffic (not saying he was wrong but upset- the driver was aggressive and non-courteous). Bus drivers have cages around them to block them from aggressive night people who can spit on drivers. This all within 3 weeks of being here! Oh and manners are on the surface but not always meant... meaning people do have a fakeness.

Disagree with the comment on transport. There are 6 rail alternatives out of Perth, with further tracks to Ellenbrook and extensions in next five year. Buses are very popular and efficient for journeys, especially 15km from the city centre. But the fact, is that urban sprawl means longer distances for buses to travel and less usage by passengers. So often you'll get bus services on journeys that are basically empty outside peak hour. So transport is heavily subsidised by government to ensure there is a good service. My advice is that if you're living 15km or more from city centre and you want to use public transport, then be near a major road routes which will have multiple bus routes that are regular on weekdays and weekends.

I don't want it to grow any further. I have watched in dismay as immigration is turning Australians into a nation of flat renters, like the inhabitants of all the other big nasty cities elsewhere. Suburbs that were once leafy, have been turned into heat sinks by infill housing. Kids are growing up with nowhere to play within earshot of their mothers, other than the driveways. New suburbs have tiny lot sizes with no room for trees, or the birdlife that the older suburbs used to have. No wonder Australia's birth rate is so low.

Light rail in Perth is quite good, and getting better. Buses are fine as well once you are familiar with the schedule. Also, the carriages don't smell bad like some trains in Paris and San Francisco ( although the B.A.R.T in Sanfran is super.) It definitely does not suck.

I agree buses and trains are very good. Remember they're heavily subsidised by government because they're running regularly but are often empty because of urban sprawl and low housing density.

Public transport is the best in the country. There are places - away from the train lines - where it's not good but generally it's safe, clean, cheap and reliable. I live 40km from the city and my train journey is 37 minutes. That's not bad at all.

The biggest problem with Perth is that jobs here are very very hard to find. I know so many people who are unemployed despite trying hard to find work. Perth is really quiet and so is the business here. So if the business is quiet they do not want to hire more people. And that is why jobs are very less here. If you want to live in a quiet place then come to Perth but if you want crowd, people, shopping, big buildings, sports etc., Melbourne or Sydney would be the best.

If you don't have money or well paid job then every where on this planet is a hell for you. But if you have money or you can catch good jobs easily then most of the world are good for you. So different people have different experience. But in general I would say it is one of the most expensive cities in the world and there are not many job available, specially for foriegn student, working holiday visa holders and in general foreigners. To catch a job in perth you have to meet following requirements: 1) 2 to 5 years job experience inside Australia depends on the job you are gonna apply 2) for most of the jobs you need to get some kinds of certificates from TAFE, colleges or universities. 3) you need connections to get .4)almost 90% of jobs are only for citizens or permanent residents. So all the other visa holders must compete for the only 10% of job opportunities which are mostly hard labour. By the way you should also accept their life style and zero culture.

Your 4 points - 1) that'll be a requirement in most countries, 2) that'll also be a requirement in most countries, 3) I wouldn't say that. I lived there for 8 years, didn't know anyone, and never had a problem getting a job. You just need to look in the right places and do a little legwork. 4) That'll be the same in most countries, because it's the law. So it's no different to most other first world countries.

Perth is a beautiful city for sure, your weighing up of the pro's and cons were accurate too. Its a healthy happy place for families in a relatively safe environment. Although transport can be difficult there are quality private transport providers in Perth that enable fantastic social experiences as well as getting there! Limousine Parties and Limousine hire is very popular in Perth as it is a great way to transport large groups of friends and families to events and they get to enjoy an exciting social experience that is uninterrupted during the limo service. :)
