Can Someone explain me the theory behind the D chord in a A minor progression?

The most obvious choice is A Dorian on this part. Am being the I chord and D the V. The major third of this V (F#) is what gives this chord progression its dorian color : the major sixth. If it was in A natural minor (aeolian) the V chord would have been minor. Hope I was clear, otherwise just tell me.
