Magnacut edge retention testing. How did it do and what are my thoughts about this new steel. This is a DCC, Deep Cuts Cutlery pass around knife ar 63.5 hrc. I did regular 1500 grit edge retention testing , sharpening and use to get a feel for this steel. I'll discuss all of that during the video and I'll test more as I can.

Hey cool! This is Kyle, the maker behind D.C.C. and thanks for your testing that ugly lil dumpling of a blade! This was the first magnacut blade I heat treated and tested, and I've since made some tweaks and have been running my smaller blades closer to 65hrc and it feels considerably different on the stones. I think this video is great because it'll help dispell some of the myth/hype of this steel and show that it's not bringing anything wild to the table in terms of performance at the edge, but bringing that 4V/Cruwear-esque toughness, stability, and wear resistance *in a very stainless package*. I'd love to send some more blades your way sometime soon. Always much appreciation for your work 🙏

I finally picked up a magnacut knife recently and had the same experience with developing a large bur quickly. I had a hugely different experience in that it took a lot of work to get the burr removed. I’m hoping that this gets better after i have to sharpen it several times.

I think this is good for mid 63 Magnacut. It's about where I'd expect 4V at 63.5 to test as well. If a 65 hrc custom heat treat is anything like my custom 4V then it's going to be a very nice stainless to use.

I have a pry guy from DCC coming in at it's supposed to be 64-65hrc now. The results are about what I expected considering on Larrins site you can see that Magnacut performs about like 4V in wear resistance. I wasn't expecting anything more(some people thought you're going to get s90v results) and I'll be happy if it performs like my 4V para 3 but without a need for coating or worry about edge corrosion. If I want high wear resistance I have customs in m398, Elmax, s125v. I'm interested to see how it compares to CPR steel which is like a non PM stainless Cruwear. I have a custom in it at 64-65 but haven't really used it but it's supposed to perform pretty good from few tests I've seen.

S90v has way less toughness and more edge retention. Magnacut is way more stainless.
@EDCandLace
@EDCandLace 2 жыл бұрын
This steel shouldn't be remotely compared to S90v it's nothing a like. You can't compare steels like that. This is a stainless steel that is super tough (think 3v/4v levels of toughness) and S90v is anything but tough but has insane edge retention... They are at two totally different ends of the spectrum in design and use... What this steel excels at S90v is wildly poor at and vice versa. For daily use S90v is my fav EDC steel with M390 a close 2nd.. In my camp knives and hard use fixed blades 3v is my fav, magnacut likely will take that spot once it becomes more available in knife profiles I'm interested in. IMHO the prospect of a stainless steel with 3v/4v performance properties will easily become my fav hard use steel if what is being stated about it is true.

In real world use it doesn't matter which knife I bring with me to work, 1095 dulls out as fast as cruwear. Can you help explain this? I'm beginning to believe if it's not a single material under strict testing circumstances, steel choice simply doesn't matter. Even toughness, 1095 isn't all that and people baton it thru frying pans. Is this whole super steel thing a scam?

@@CNYKnifeNerd considering G only compared it to production 4v... that particular question remains... any custom blade with a dialled in h.t. will out perform production blades with " ball park" h.t. ... Its all conductive to where and how each steel performs and where it sits in relation to other steels that have been around for a while... 😀

The hype on this was steered in the wrong direction by some. The hype of Magnacut should be it's stainless with better toughness and edge stability than what manufacturers are currently pushing. The maker did comment and say this was his first blade in this steel and it may not be optimized for the given hardness. He is running it around 65 now. Once I get a harder example I'm sure we will see it excel. Think back to the M390 video BJ did and how the 59.5 hrc example took much more damage over the 62 hrc example. This is what I believe we are going to see as more examples are tested.

@@darrenkirk6576 Well, yeah, a better heat treat is definitely "conductive" to better performance, but are you saying you think magnacut (or 4V) with a specialty heat treat could outperform s90v with a standard good factory heat treat? I have a v4e custom done with a specialty heat treat, and other than sharpening easier (much thinner bte) I can't tell the difference between that and my shaman or mammoth in daily use. Specialty heat treats exist to eke out that last 5-10% of performance from steels that good commercial heat treats leave on the table. 4V and magnacut we're not meant as s90v alternatives, and no heat treat will put them even close to the s90v ballpark. Magnacut is a good S30V alternative, that's where people's expectations should be.

So magna-cut is a tool steel with stainless property's. The numbers aren't very earth shattering. The big thing to me is that was a custom knife and it doesn't live up to the hype. I wonder what the production numbers will be, I'm not holding my breath. I personally prefer midrange steel it does fine for me 14c28n, Aus10,xhp. I have got a big camp knife in A8 so far I really like it. But I have to see how it holds up during camping season. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Magnacut is a stainless with tool steel properties. Considering how production 4V and custom 4V do this Magnacut at 63.5 is right where it should be. Too many hyped this steel in the wrong ways. It's bonus is its a stainless with very improved edge stability and toughness. Once I can get a 64.5 to 65 rc example I'm betting the results will be very good. As an example, if this Magnacut is what we would see in production you will get better wear resistance than 95% of the M390, 20cV and 204p out there. All while having better edge stability, toughness and impact resistance so it's a plus from a user perspective. If it only does a little better than this you still get wear resistance like production M4 in a stainless that has better toughness and edge stability than other widely used stainless from production companies. The hype was just focused in the wrong place.

@@Outpost_76 always a pleasure to get your perspective. I enjoy your videos. As far as these super steels go to me with what I use my knives for. I don't see a reason to spend the money. I just don't use my knives enough anymore. My usage is outdoor camping so edge holding isn't as important as ease of sharpening and toughness. For cardboard I use xhp, 14c28n. But who knows maybe something new will pop up.

I heard that the heat treat on magnacut was not too difficult, hopefully that translates to results for production knives. I think his knives are even harder now for the magnacut. The lower Chromium amount than a regular stainless probably translates to greater ease of sharpening

As I get some more in to test I'll try it out. I will also do a quick sharpening with this one to see. As easy as it was on a diamond plate and the Venev stones I'd bet it's going to sharpen without trouble on a standard water stone.
@matusknives
@matusknives 2 жыл бұрын
@@Outpost_76 that sounds great as most high end kitchen knives users don't use diamond stones (even though this is slowly changing, it won't be becoming standard anytime soon) or diamond plates (only to flatten stones) for sharpening. So to be able to get the full potential sharpening wise on conventional sharpening stones is important.
