Naturally esplendidé and esquisetté!! You know I yam a Maggie freek! 260 *mono* here. You are a vibtato hound too. Sounds great alnico/ceramic and that tubeset is priceless. The 6973 has a wonderful tonal quality. The 260 is a 6L6gb behemoth and super loud. I have 6973 in my big ol' Supro S6650 Royal Reverb. Watchin Jack surf the linoleum sea was a crack up! The car is coming along fine. Cruising along with George Jones on the toon box makes for a fun road trip. Thanks again for the fine video presentation of the fine Noble/Maggie!!

Wow Uncle Doug, I really like the new front end on that Ford coupe. I agree wholeheartedly with having some contrasting pieces to the chrome sprinkled about and like your choice of how to do it. Uncle Doug, Man, you have an innate ability to describe the finer points of these old amps. Your channel is just awesome. I've been watching for a few years now and always learn something from you. I'm an amp tech in WV and have worked on many hundreds of obscure pieces, although Fender is my forte. Lots of old amps here. Worked on a handful of Magnatones. Every one of them looked like someone haphazardly soldered a shite load of parts and wires then stuffed them into a chassis for maximum confusion factor. The one you're working on is the best example I've seen. Thank you so much sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Stay safe.

Two channels of trouble to deal with and you didn't even bat an eyelid. Those clever red things somehow cause a frequency modulation. That is special magic indeed. I reckon they slow electrons down like a glass rod refracted in water but how that doesn't create a big queue, like the ladies at interval time at the theatre I just don't know. I'm going to have to watch your video where you explain it. Part two is a transformation of the most immense proportions. I always look forward to a new video, it makes my day, as I'm sure it does many others. Great job on the Rod. I like contrasting colors too. Many whole grains and dairy products, including milk and yogurt, are good sources of selenium. As well as Pork, beef, turkey, chicken, fish, shellfish, and eggs. I am not sure about the benefits of selenium snorting but it is a "powerful mineral that is essential for the proper functioning of your body. It plays a critical role in metabolism and thyroid function and helps protect your body from damage caused by oxidative stress".

@@SaultiBalldeip ...true, however Brazil nuts are naturally high in radioactive radium. Up to 3 orders of magnitude higher in radium than other foods. I would limit the amount of Brazil nuts in the diet. Although you would need quite a few Brazil nuts to induce any significant health risk. Maybe safer to snort Selenium that eat Brazil Nuts - in the long term anyway.

Great work, Uncle Doug. Loved the reverence given for this fine amp. Magnatone fan since my best friend at 8 years old got a 1 12 tone and vol version and a Jazz-alike for Christmas. This was '65. Bought an Estey Mag in '75. I miss it all the time. Neighbor was asked to play accordian at an Italian wedding reception about 10 years ago. You never fail to amaze, UD. Likewise with Jack, that surfin' rascal... This amp sounds so transparent, I had to do a double take on the output tubes (the 6973/6CZ5 family), which were used in many Wurlitzer jukeboxes, as well as the fantastic Gretsch combo amps. Turns out that on fixed bias, their max distortion is 2%, but when cathode biased (as in the Gretsches), it jumps up to 10%...it's just too bad that the 13th Floor Elevators didn't have a few of these on hand for their recording sessions...keep up the great work!

Hi Doug, hope all is well with you and yours. It's interesting to see how well the customer packed the amplifier chassis. At least it arrived in one piece. I really don't like accepting shipped amplifiers due to poor customer packing, and the excessively rough handling by the couriers. Doing repairs full time, I've learned to do something to cover my keester against liability. I shoot an unboxing video in case there's damage from either the courier, or poor customer packing. It protects me and gives evidence for the customer to see in case there is damage in shipping. This was recommended by a lawyer friend. there's no denial when its in picture and sound. The Magnatone amplifiers are a very interesting and different animal as opposed to the Fenders. Those Varistors in the vibrato circuit are very critical and I've had to play around with different values to get a vib circuit operational again after a failure. Varistors are still being made, but not many suppliers carry them. The vibrato in your particular amp could actually be better, but I wouldn't attempt to even try at this point. You could be in for a serious adventure in the attempt. It's adequate as it is. Every Magnatone amp is different. The 6973 output tubes weren't a popular tube to use, but many of the lower powered Univox amps had them. The 6CG7's were more popular in tube-type TV's back in the day and were used as a vertical/horizontal deflection oscillator, and even sync separator. Very popular tube back in the 50's & 60's especially in early Color TV's. Good repair video! enjoyed it as usual :)

It's hilarious that the true vibrato here is called Super Tremolo, while the Fender tremolo was called vibrato. I like the vibeyness of the vibrato for sure. I guess they wanted to be clear that it's a different thing. Nice to see you back active! And Jack enjoying life as ever! I'm pretty new to this channel, but the Guitologist recommended the channel and he was right, I really liked it immediately. I had heard you had been somewhat inactive for a while, but to my great luck you've posted new videos recently just when I started following :) Been binge watching the videos. Keep it up, the content is interesting be it cool amps, educational, humor or hot rod! Never seen hot rod stuff before, this project seemed very challenging!

Yet another wonderful video uploaded by Uncle Doug. They are much appreciated here in Australia. One would think that valve technology would have been run over by solid state and microchip technology a long time ago, and yet valve amplification is still popular today (especially in musical instrument amps and HiFi systems.) Keep up the great work champ. Cheers.

Big D, what up dog. A couple of things. That amp is really amazing, and it sounds great. I am impressed by the fact that you had to do so little to get it to sound just right, yup, they don't build things to last like back int the day, even the transformers still work after all these years, really a credit to the folks that built 'em. A brief comment on Vibrato. Back in the day Vibrato was such a big deal that Hammond manufactured purpose built organs that featured Vibrato. The B V and C V, were the most well known. The organ used a rotary switch with the following selections, "C1", "C2", "C3" were the chorus settings, and the "V1", "V2, and "V3", the chorus settings were a vibrato and straight signal mix and the "V" setting were pure vibrato. The brasileiro organist Walter Wanderlay used this feature to great success. It would be great to see you take on a Leslie 122 or 147 project, they both have solenoid circuits to control the rotors plus the audio circuits. The car is looking great, I agree with the black contrast, too much chrome, and everything seems to disappear. The fastener you are calling a cotter pin, is actually called a "wedge pin" or "wedge bolt". It might be a good idea to check your bolt protrusion through the nut on all of the front end hardware. The "Wally" I mean NHRA requires that the protrusion of a wheel stud through a lug nut, must be equal to or greater than the studs diameter. It is a generally accepted practice the every nut and bolt that are structural on Race cars and Street machines, follow this practice. Also you should have enough negative Caster so that the vehicle will go straight on a flat surface without the driver touching the wheel, this is another NHRA thing, but is applicable to Street Machines as well. Blue Mule

Very cool! I have one of these beasties and now i know alot more about its innards. Mine needs a little help, it really seems to run hot. Mine is a late '58, early '59 280 and didn't come with a schematic, it had 6973's in it when i got it but they were tired so i did some research and replaced them with 6CZ5's (wayyyy cheaper) but i don't think they can handle it. Well, you've showed me how to check the bias so ill start there, soon is i get it from storage. Thanks Doug.

Great videos, but a very minor nitpick. I've been enjoying your videos very much, and am learning quite about about this type of equipment. Just as an example, I like the way you step through the measurements and calculations for plate current. Very clear. Now the minor nitpick: At about 10:55 and 15:00 when you're working on the dead channel you say you're injecting a 50 Hz test signal, but that signal is definitely higher than 50 Hz, more like somewhere in the 275 Hz to 300 Hz range.

Nice work Doug. It's interesting in solid state amps the speaker minus [black] has to be isolated from chassis [earth] ground. I investigated a hum issue in a PA only to discover the minus [black] of a power amp was tied to the same ground as the mixer. Once separated, the hum was history
@UncleDoug
@UncleDoug 4 жыл бұрын
I have a feeling it's because most solid state amps don't have an output transformer to power the speaker(s), Bob. The OPT isolates the speaker from the chassis and grounding of one lead is necessary. The SS speaker is not isolated from the circuit, thus grounding a lead is not necessary.....or advisable.
@bwithrow011
@bwithrow011 4 жыл бұрын
That's true Doug. I have yet to see an OPT in an SS amp, instrument or power amp. It could be an issue of economics as to why OPT's are not used is SS amps

Hey Unkie its me again!!! Just had to comment.... Why are your cats so much more interesting and fun than our own. Our household cats are lazy aloof and fairly unaffectionate. To get my fix for fur, I have resorted to taking away the big sack of Tuna Temptations and have bribed a couple of the neighborhood strays. I now stay outside the home for fun ..... Of course with todays dangers I have be sure to wear protection. I understand that these feline playmates run around the neighborhood and run the risk of carrying the COVID19 cootie virus. So i have to suit up in a labcoat, mask, and gloves. The stray orange cat is showing progress riding around in old radio flyer wagon as we roll across the yard to fetch their water and food bowls. Something my Snowshoe would never tolerate. What I really wanted to point out is observation that you have made concerning packaging amps for shipping. OH MAN!!! That certainly is a very sore point for me. After receiving many multiple deliveries of busted up electronic antiquities from Fed-Ex (worst shipper ever) UPS and the USPS, I am extremely sensitive to the issue of shipping our treasures. I would not even rely upon any shipping packaging service such as FedEx often will require if ya wish to properly insure. Even with the shippers own approved professional packaging service, it is nothing short of a fulltime job to jump through the hoops and work for getting any issuance of a proper claim. The problem is even greater for the valuation of an old obsolete piece of electronics. You really want to think twice if ya got a ship an all orig. Tweed! I have not had a problem with any of the amps I have shipped.. But it does cost alot! I bullet proof all my shipments. You have to assume that some samsonite gorilla is going to mishandle that package . I kinda figure that I package them to survive a 14ft drop off the loading deck of a typical aircraft onto the concrete tarmic below. My first tip is that the majority of the old Fender BF and SF amps are being reissued by Fender today ... As such new packaging materials are being produced to ship to retailers. If you work with retailers and have a good relation you might get them to save the orig shipping cartons from those reissue amps and can use it to package the vintage gear you intend on shipping or if ya live in or near Corona California you might be able to stroll on into their plant and if ya find the right management person in a good mood,,,, offer to buy a brand new carton (their cost is $14 for a twin reverb ) Second tip.... Its pretty well universal to double box stuff. But you have to fi the void in between. Peanuts and bubbles seldom suffice. I purchase a 4x8 slab of 2 inch thick styrofoam insulated siding. t The kind that has a aluminum foil bonded to one side. I build a big box like foam cabinet using a table saw and dado blade to glue and interlock it together. Looks like a huge ice chest cooler that the shipping carton fits snugly into. I wrap the foam in recycled (appliance stores good source) heavy duty cardboard shipping carton. and lots of stretch tape. I then write fragile and a warning to baggage handlers the contents are cursed and must be handled with care.... NEVER SHIP FED EX THEY SUCK THE WORST!

Uncle Doug , You are most awesome indeed! I can just imagine the time you must spend to read each and every one of responses to your videos and to thoughtfully answer each one! Especially when you get some bored eccentric stranger that stays up all night writing long and rambling muses that have poor punctuation. When I re-read some of the stuff I write, I have to go over it a couple of times myself just to make sense of some of it. Thats what happens when you take your smartphone into the bed with you. Between the auto correct and nodding off, it gives the impression that you have been on a good selenium binge or something and now your coming down .....😱 Hey Unkie I appreciate the time you take to do your videos and the personal replies to my dumb ancedotal musings. I hope that this new age of media for the masses is not only bringing you fame but you are begining to reap some fortune from it as well.... It seems you certainly get some great packages with all sorts of treasures. I am going to have to figure out something especially unique, unforgettable and very groovy doovy super special to send your way..... Hmmm???? I am really going to have to work hard on this one!!!! In the meantime maybe I can buy your next round and shoot ya a couple finn! Stay safe and healthy. Happy Fathers Day! SouthboundSuarez aka dougroundup.... This once was how the adult entertainers would choose the name to recieve on their paychecks.... I never was in the industry or into the industry, ,,, well not so much, doh!
