I wish I could use FCP for everything! This video wasn't to convince anyone to switch, it was more to show they are very comparable so no one should have FOMO which it comes to roto tools- Both apps are great, both AI masks are great and regardless which NLE you use you're in a good place. With more time DR could do a better job refining but I did this test similar to how I work with a client sitting with me while editing, more to test ideas quickly not about the finessing/finishing stage. The big elephant in the room with DR, since I use magic mask all the time, is your tracking data going to red once you cut down your clip in the timeline and losing all of that valuable hard work, or you change anything in the color wheels to a node before it, and poof! all that blue line turns to red. A few things, one is once your tracking work is done is to go back to your timeline in DR and right click on your clip and select Render In Place, this is a wonderful time saver, and I just use H.265 which turns out to be just as good or even better in some circumstances than Prores 422, and it takes up much less space. Anyway, Render In Place is an option to constantly losing your Magic Mask, ahem, ahem!, Tragic Mask, I'd rather say, :) and you can still do more color grading to that clip, it won't break. Another option is in the 3 dots on the right side of the Magic Mask panel you get an option to Regenerate your mask, which it redoes exactly as it did before. Once done only put any new node after that node, or downstream from that one, and you can change any value since they're downstream from MMask node. Just make sure to not shorten your magic masked clip in your timeline or change anything on any node that is upstream or before the magic masked node. Honestly, I don't work in FCPX, but because of its seamlessness from what I see here, I'd give it an easy win for now. Once DR fixes their 'tragic' mask once and for all, it will be a whole different conversation. But if you're in DR, as I pointed out there are good workarounds. My favorite is to combine the Regenerate Tracking data option with the right click Render In Place in Resolve and you don't have to worry. Now last point, is if for example your rendered clip isn't satisfactory to you or it was too short, or you realized you were just needing an alpha channel (which in this case you have to export your Render In Place in Prores 4444 or higher, it didn't work in my experience at lower resolutions), you could right click again on your rendered clip and select Decompose To Original. If you want to keep the Rendered file separately, and still Decompose that clips to its original file, make sure to duplicate that rendered file first then go ahead and decompose it. It all sounds like a lot, and it is until you get the hang of it then you can do all of those operations within minutes. Hope this helps.

forgive my inexperience, but I find Davinci Resolve more accurate and easy in the sense that I have more control in things like invert mask, and apply different effects to it without removing the Alpha. In Final Cut Pro I find that to do the same workflow I have to duplicate the video and apply the effects to the video that I want depending if I want to apply to the mask or "everything but the mask". Am I missing something? I am a hobbyist, I do not edit videos for a living even part time. But I like to make videos for my kid and even went into deep colouring courses and fusion courses. Before that I was all-in in Final Cut Pro and Color Finale 2 Pro. Also, when I was testing Magic Mask I think I found a feather option for the cursor. To not make it hard if my recollection is correct.

the main advantage of magic mask is that it is built into fusion page where you can control however you want like you its paint mask tool to patch flickers or mix it with standard rotoscoping tools or get two mask and combine them to get results in many ways

In Davinci resolve that method you used is too cumbersome. Just go to fusion, click shift+space and type Magic Mask. Click on it, select your subject, feather it and analyze forward and boom, done. It's also the preferred workflow since it does not alter the nodes in the color page...."In case you need to do some coloring later"

But if you did watch the video, I wish I could use FCP for every client project, but can't either for project sharing, final project delivery, text based editing, poor key framing, poor audio tools. @@RafaelLudwig having to switch pages instead of working in one page is also klunky . Magnet 🧲 timeline has yet to be beaten for its simplicity and speed. There are plug-ins for most shortfalls including key framing. CapCut is a piece of rubbish in comparison. The fact that anyone even mentions them in the same breath is a joke. Yes the Autocaptioning is great but the rest is more of a gimmick and most of it in now in a subscription model. Thanks for the great video. Yes no real multi user mode for Fcpx but one can round trip & share to cloud workflows. DVR is still a hog on many systems apart from the very latest. It’s capable but not the fastest unless you build a custom pc with a massive gpu to support it.

From what you’ve shown in this video, Final Cut’s Magnetic Mask is just better. It’s more refined in the cut outs, significantly faster, and easier to used. That’s not to say Resolve’s Magic Mask is bad-it’s also good-but Apple just one up them here.
