Am I mistaken in thinking that - the energy discharge you achieved by shorting both terminals of the battery with a wire was enough to generate some rotation which was stored in the flywheel mechanism of the rotor? Or is this thing supposed to spin perpetually when "dialed in"? Like do you always need the battery to discharge through something such as the wire for it to spin or can it spin on its own without depleting the battery? Either way, very cool video. Neat toy!

It will deplete the battery. If it were perfectly balanced, and I decided to give it a larger moment of inertia (like adding a flywheel), it would spin a lot longer. It's really just an exercise in spinning something with greatly reduced friction. Another question you might ask, though, is "D the sparks add to the efficiency?" I think they do, but this demonstration wouldn't prove it either way. They indicate that a high voltage is occurring, and it makes me think that maybe adding an inductor and capacitor could have some interesting effects.
